Precisely as advertised. (1) the patio area is spectacular in terms of vibe and view (view is 11 on a scale of 1-10). (2) the inside accommodation is generous and comfortable — lots of spaces to mingle or hide in a group. (3) Paul is a spectacular host. Helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, accessible. If I ever come back to this part of NI, I am 100% certain to try to book this place.

Relaxing stay in the heart of the Mourne Mountains

The house was lovely. The accommodation was great for us two families with teenagers. It was clean and had everything you need for a great stay. We travelled around the coast and very much enjoyed a visit to the Kilbroney park which Paul recommended. He’s a great host and very knowledgeable.

Four x Two

We booked this property at short notice after our original booking in the Mournes was cancelled two weeks prior. What a find. The location and property were amazing and there was plenty of room for 8 adults (all 55yrs+). Very relaxing stay. Thank you Paul :)

Excellent location

This barn sits in an idyllic location looking down across Carlingford Lough. The position is very private and the property isn’t overlooked. The accommodation is lovely although it would have been good to know there are two cross beams on the first floor that are really low (I’m 5’6” and I had to duck under them). No one knocked themselves out but we all bumped our heads at some point 🙈 Just one to watch.

Christmas at Crotlieve

Christmas at Crotlieve was magical. Even if the weather does not cooperate, the barn is cosy and comfortable and the views are terrific. Paul is a wonderful host, available to help or just chat without being obtrusive. I would highly recommend Paul and his property at any time of year. The only minor thing I would recommend ( and I mean minor ) is to obtain new double bed mattresses for the property.

The magic of Crotlieve

A perfect place to find peace and tranquillity at the top of the kilbroney valley. It was so easy to find good walks, easy to access the village and to access the sea. The Barn was spacious, five star quality accommodation with a fabulous view across the valley. The owner Paul was so lovely, sharing his stories of this part of the Kilbroney Valley and all it’s fascinating history and guiding us toward the best walks in the Mournes. We will definitely return in time.

Tree lovers idyll

A beautiful, warm and comfortable barn conversion overlooking Kilbronry Valley and Carlingford Lough, above the charming village of Rostrevor. The interior finish is of the highest standard and in excellent taste. Our host was very helpful and informative about the area. There is a wonderful estate park adjoining the village where there are hundreds of magnificent mature trees from around the world. The Crotlieve Barn is also close to another wonderful arboretum at Castlewellan, and not far from the magnificent Mt Stewart Estate and gardens. A perfect place to stay.

A beautiful home with stunning views!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Barn, and it was as lovely as described. Even though the weather was wet, we were able to enjoy the walks and Rostrevor village. We were very comfortable and were completely able to relax in the peaceful environment. I would recommend this property to anyone looking to enjoy this part of Northern Ireland. We would love to book the property again in the future.

Crotlieve is special !

We had a very friendly welcome from the owner ,Paul , who also provided a really interesting overview of the area and it's history .The welcome pack was also really appreciated . The property is really quite special and is in a great location with wonderful views down to Rostrevor , approximately 3 miles away and Carlingford Lough . Apart from being exceptionally comfortable and ideal for a break with family or friends ,there is a real feeling of luxury and an attention to detail in design and style . If you want to stay in a beautiful area and in a luxury property this is the place for you !

Sobre o anfitrião

Anfitrião: Paul Clerkin

Imagem do perfil do anfitrião
Fifth generation here at Crotlieve.
In my youth I was a mountaineer & climber travelling to some of the worlds great landscapes, this reinforced a love of the outdoors and our wonderful natural and built heritage and after a career as a building contractor I came to realize our own local landscape and remarkable history here in Rostrevor was second to none.
So I headed on a new trail and converted my barn to a holiday let and invited people to come stay and see our wonderful little piece of the world.
From 2014 I have been listing and recording our ancient Rostrevor trees with the Woodland Trust ancient tree inventory, we entered and campaigned for my favourite tree the 220yr old leaning Holm oak in Kilbroney meadow and it won the N Ireland Tree of the year for 2016.
From my love and research on the ancient trees, the living legacy from those landed gentry once resident here, I wrote my Tree Trail and with Mourne Heritage trust and council it was produced as the Kilbroney Meadow Tree Trail.
With a local community group we added art and poetry and published a new book in 2017, "The Trees of Kilbroney Park" and it was a great success.
From 2019 - 2021, I was project manager on the restoration/renovation of the Ross family castle-home / Convent, now Rostrevor House and in 2024 published another book on General Ross and the natural and built Heritage of Rostrevor:
"Ross of Bladensburg, The Family, The Legacy, Rostrevor"
and its available at the Barn and local shops.

Its been great to welcome people from all over the world to the Barn and local area and I'm delighted to offer a guided tour of the rare and ancient trees of Kilbroney Park, or a historic Ross walk and talk legacy tour.

Por que o anfitrião escolheu essa propriedade

I grew close by and have always loved the beauty, solitude and magnificent scenery of this place after visiting as a child with my father.
I purchased the property in 1982, built my home here, propagated and planted hundreds of trees in my 3 acre gardens and in 2008- 2010 I converted my barn/workshop to this holiday let. Incorporating lots of new Eco developments, recycled natural materials and our own ideas of comfort and homeliness.

Now after 40 years here, I'm still impressed by and never tire of watching the big skies, sunset’s, storms, the wonderful scenery and the seasons as they come and go in the valley.
Where the Fox, Badger, Red squirrels, Pine martins and wonderful bird life all feel safe and are welcome visitors from the forest in our gardens.

O que faz essa propriedade ser única?

Easy check in, just walk on in and make yourself at home in the safety and peace of mind of a single Cosy Eco Barn conversion built with great care and attention.
Unique, charming, secluded, spotlessly clean and all located amongst breath-taking scenery, overlooking Kilbroney valley to Carlingford lough and with secure off road parking for 4 cars.

Close to historic Rostrevor village with its 3 new restaurants, 3 cafes, 3 carry outs, 7 old pubs, music 3 nights a week and Included with a stay a guided walk and talk tour, among the rare and ancient Rostrevor trees, or alternatively, Historic walk and talk tour on the life and legacy of Major General Robert Ross.

See the famous Fairy Glen, the beautiful Kilbroney park the outstanding views and scenery from Cloughmore, great walking and biking and lots of wonderful local attractions.
Perfect for the relaxed or adventure traveller.
