About the host
Hosted by Paul Clerkin
Fifth generation here at Crotlieve. In my youth I was a mountaineer & climber travelling to some of the worlds great landscapes, this reinforced a love of the outdoors and our wonderful natural and built heritage and after a career as a building contractor I came to realize our own local landscape and remarkable history here in Rostrevor was second to none. I converted my barn to a holiday let and invited people to come stay and see our wonderful little piece of the world. I have recorded our ancient Rostrevor trees with the Woodland Trust ancient tree inventory, entered and campaigned for my favourite tree the 220yr old leaning Holm oak in Kilbroney meadow and it won the N Ireland Tree of the year for 2016. Wrote my Tree Trail and with Mourne Heritage trust and council and it was produced as the Kilbroney Meadow Tree Trail. With a local community group we added art and poetry and published a new book in 2017: The Trees of Kilbroney Park. From 2019 - 2021, I was project manager on the renovation of the Ross family castle and in 2024 published my second book: Ross of Bladensburg, The Family, The Legacy, Rostrevor. and its available at the Barn and local shops.
Its been great to welcome people from all over the world to the Barn and local area and I'm delighted to offer a guided tour of the rare and ancient trees of Kilbroney Park, or a historic Ross walk and talk legacy tour.
Why they chose this property
I grew up close by and have always loved the beauty, solitude and magnificent scenery of this place after visiting as a child with my father. I purchased the property in 1982, built my home here, propagated and planted hundreds of trees in my 3 acre gardens and in 2008- 2010 I converted my barn/workshop to this holiday let. Incorporating lots of new Eco developments, recycled natural materials and our own ideas of comfort and homeliness.
Now after 40 years here, I'm still impressed by and never tire of watching the big skies, sunset’s, storms, the wonderful scenery and the seasons as they come and go in the valley. Where wildlife feel safe, free and welcome visitors from the forest in our gardens.
