About the property

Very Private 2.5 Ac Mountain Retreat: True 3 Bdr On Large, Rushing Trout Stream

The Experience: Moonshine Bend is the perfect retreat for plant enthusiasts, animal lovers, bird watchers, and anglers. Here, the wildlife is flourishing, the farmhouse is comfortable and the grounds provide a safe haven for you and nature, alike. Come stay at Moonshine Bend to enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience with mother nature.

What a way, to get away! This beautiful, secluded, and very well appointed country farmhouse feels like it’s miles from anywhere, when in reality… it’s 7 miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway, 15 minutes to Boone, 20 minutes to Blowing Rock and just a short drive to West Jefferson.

Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, this charming farmhouse has over 1000 feet of a pristine, state stocked, trout stream, known as Elk Creek, running through the 2.5 acre property.

Endless opportunities await you on the farm. Casting your line for that trophy trout, splashing in the swimming holes, hiking, cycling, playing croquet or horse shoes, even catching fire flies at dusk on a summer’s eve.

When you’re ready to venture away from the farm, you’re at the foot of the High Country. To your left, Boone, Blowing Rock, & Banner Elk. To your right, the charming town of West Jefferson. Antiquing, Tweetsie Railroad, ski resorts, horseback riding, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Caverns, the original Mast General Store of Valle Crucis, a Tanger Outlet Mall and Moses Cone Estate are all within a short drive.

When all the activities have worn you out, there’s nothing better than rocking away the time on the porch’s rockers or perhaps a nap in the hammock by the creek would soothe your soul. This is truly a place to drop out of the hustle & bustle and tune in to nature. Where deep breaths of fresh mountain air clear your mind and relax your body. Come feel this relaxation for yourself!

The Home: Come home to the Farmhouse where you will enjoy three bedrooms (sleeps six), two and one-half baths all furnished with high quality linens.

Cook your favorite meals in the very well-equipped kitchen or outside on the grill.

Enjoy the many amenities such as two cast iron stoves, whole-house water filtration system, zoned air conditioning and heating, wireless internet, a DVD player, television, plenty family oriented DVDs and family games and puzzles.

Ample parking is provided with easy access. And safety is a priority with new smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house.

About Renee and Drew Royall

We both grew up in NC... We searched the High Country for a year before finding this unique and priceless piece of land. We consider it to be our "Devine Intervention!" A place to come and slow down, completely unwind & let the worries of everyday life, go!

Renee and Drew Royall purchased this farmhouse in 2015

Why Renee and Drew Royall chose Blue Ridge Mountains

In today's 24/7 plugged in lifestyle... we all need a place to unplug and decompress, if only for a couple of days. This is the spot!

Completely private, the home sits on the banks of Elk Creek, a pristine state stock trout stream. This home is on 2.5 acres of beautiful flat land, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Centrally located to Boone, Blowing Rock, West Jefferson and the famous Blue Ridge Parkway... this home provides a great base camp to explore the surrounding area OR simply checkin, and enjoy the land and Elk Creek.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Secluded, there are no other homes in sight.

Breath taking, the lay of the land & the position of the house on the creek is incredible.

Relaxing, rocking on the wrap around porch, napping in the hammock, or walking along the creek bank... You will feel yourself slow down and find yourself, enjoying the moment.

Convenient, to everything the highlands has to offer. 6 miles to the famous Blue Ridge Parkway, 15 minutes to Boone, less than half an hour to Blowing Rock and West Jefferson.

Fishing, a dream any angler can wake up too!

The music, of mother nature is awesome. You can hear and see elk creek from every room in the home.

The home, or as we call it, "the Farm"... Perfectly furnished and comfortable. "the Farm" will embrace you & your family! It will make you so happy, you'll be sad to leave.

Moonshine Bend is truly, a little piece of heaven on earth!

So gorgeous we stayed an extra day!!

  • 5 of 5

The property itself is all you need for an incredible getaway. We ended up adding a day to our stay because 2 nights is just not enough. You will be sad to leave regardless of the length of your stay. Renee is incredible, very helpful and friendly and an absolute joy to converse with.

The perfect retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Once again, 3 generations of our family gathered at Moonshine Bend on Elk Creek for a peaceful and relaxing retreat. The beauty of the farm and home brings us back time and time again, we have never been disappointed, this place always exceeds our expectations. The farm is fabulous! Whether it's relaxing on the back porch with your morning coffee and a good book, or listening to the sounds of nature and the water cascading over the rocks in the creek, we always feel right at home. Everyone loves the fire pit, the perfect place for roasting marshmallows for s'mores! The property owners have taken the time to make sure that the kitchen is stocked with everything you might need. All of the beds are extremely comfortable with high end linens... there's nothing like a great nights sleep to prepare for another day of fun in the beautiful NC mountains! We thank the property owners for sharing their beautiful home with us! I highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a peaceful home away from home!

Perfect place for relaxation.

We had a great time at this property. Our kids did not want to leave. We spent our days playing in the creek and nights making Smores by the campfire. Great place to get away from it all!!

Beautiful vacation spot for nature lovers

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic 9 day vacation in this home! The wide, rushing creek is just steps away from the house and the property includes a long stretch of the creek to explore. Our elderly dog was with us and he loved the creek, too. We went on the best hike of our lives, Green Knob Trail, about 20 minutes from the house. If you're able to hike 2.5 miles, you must do it! We also hiked the Cascade Falls trail, which is an easy hike very close to the house and enjoyable. I should add that this kitchen is stocked better than my own kitchen at home! Just buy your basic groceries and you're set. This house is for nature lovers and those who want to get away from it all. Restaurants and shopping are 30 minutes away and there's no cable or Netflix. A nice grocery store is close by, though. I would highly recommend this house to families of all ages who want to really experience what the mountains offer.

Owner's Response: Kim- Thanks for your kind comments. We're so happy that you all had such a great time. As noted in our write up... Moonshine Bend is a place to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. We've found from our guests, that with all the Nature at the Farm and the assorted DVD collection (approximately 150) that the lack of cable tv or Netflix isn't a bad thing. Again, we're delighted you all had a good time and we hope you will plan another visit to The Farm!

The property is very beautiful, right on the river. The house is very clean and it has everything yo

  • 4 of 5

The kitchen has all you might need and more! I am not giving 5 stars because of a few small inconveniences. The biggest one was some sort of insects that bothered us and we are still itching! They were in the bedrooms and pinching us at night. I wonder if somebody had a pet with flees before us.

A smaller unpleasant experience was having to wash and dry the towels at the end of our stay. While not difficult , doing laundry felt like a rude awakening.....my vacation was over, back to work before I even left the property.

The natural beauty of this place makes up for any little thing that might otherwise not be perfect. I would definitely recommend it to my friends!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review and we're glad that you enjoyed your stay & that you'd recommend to your friends! Always a positive thing! :-) I wish you would have texted me about insects, as the house is treated on a quarterly bases by Terminix for insects. We request that dogs be on flea & trick prevention and not be allowed upstairs in the bedrooms. We can only hope that folks honor that request. No one else after you all have stated an issue, but I will have Terminix out to make sure. Also, I appreciate the feedback on the towels. We're between a rock and a hard place on some issues. We request towels be washed and dried because of the turn time between check in / check outs and the towels are the nice thick ones that take a while to dry. We want folks to be able to enjoy the house for as long as possible and this only leaves about 2 hours for our cleaners to come in and make sure the house is spotless for the next guest. We only stay at VRBOs when traveling and have found this to be a common request. Hopefully this makes sense and would not stop you from coming back. Again, we appreciate your review.

Perfect setting to b one with nature

  • 2 of 5

Rules and regulations - followed to a aT on the refridge we thought- so as not to put much on the cleaning crew -that we were charged for ,. Rules and regs hovered over us the whole visit to the point where no matter how pristine we left it, we knew we would be at fault for something, which was the garbage that we neatly bagged and even placed out of rainsway....bring your contract with u, memorize it beforehand, and read it again when u go to bed. Oh, if u happen to forget it, tuck yourself in with the farmhouse guidebook so u r not at fault for a thing. Beware of BBQ.

Owner's Response: You are the 1st renters in 2 years that we have kept any form of the security deposit ($50). PLEASE READ ALL OTHER REVIEWS for a TRUE REFLECTION of what staying at Moonshine Bend is like, as there's always going to be someone that can't take responsibility for their actions or admit when they've made a mistake! When I spoke to these folks about the issue of not removing trash, I was told that they hadn't read the contract since it was signed in Oct. 16. How is this our fault. After our conversation, I sent them a copy of the Contract and Highlighted the directions on trash in 3 separate places. This has clearly never been an issue before and ($50 for the removal of 7 bags of trash. This was for the house keepers time & milage to drive to the dump). As for rules hovering over them, I'm not sure what is meant by that. These folks managed to lock themselves out, and were immediately given a code to let them back in. For the grill, 2 other families have stayed since these folks, used the grill without issue.

When you’re in the High Country, you just never know what’s around the corner. You could be feeding the bears in the morning, and be on a train heading for trouble in the afternoon. Families build memories and traditions that last a lifetime, all set against the backdrop of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Tweetsie Railroad: A Wild West family theme park featuring a three-mile, steam-powered train ride through the North Carolina mountains. Folklore and legend feel that he confessed to the murder to protect his true love, Anne Melton. Local musicians will sing and play acoustical instruments and Appalachian square dancing will be featured.

Horn In the West: This outdoor drama in Boone—which runs mid-June through mid-August tells the tale of Daniel Boone’s adventures in the High Country and the little known, pivotal role local pioneers played in winning the American Revolution at the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Dates: June 27 to August 16, nightly except Mondays

Times: 7:30pm preshow; 8:00pm main performance

Grandfather Mountain: The swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain the High Country’s premier natural attraction entertains, informs—even inspires—young and old, families, and the serious outdoor adventurer.

Grandfather Mountain, the tallest mountain in the Blue Ridge and the world’s only privately owned international biosphere reserve, is non-profit preservation at its loftiest.

A spectacular drive takes visitors to the newly wheelchair-accessible mile-high swinging bridge, thousands of feet above the Carolina Piedmont. You’ll marvel at 360-degree views of mountain ridge after mountain ridge retreating to the distant horizon. Surveys show that the journey to the other side is always the highlight of a trip to Grandfather Mountain.

A world-class nature museum, interpretive programs, and environmental habitats for deer, bears, cougars, eagles and otters offer outdoor education and entertainment. Awesome trails lead to high adventure.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

Called “America’s Favorite Drive,” but the Blue Ridge Parkway is about so much more than driving. Enjoy hiking trails, biking, lakes, picnic areas, bouldering, rock climbing, and of course, some of the most beautiful views in the south.
