About Alan G Billingsley
For nearly twenty-five years I worked for the State Legislature (Assembly) in Albany, NY. Every chance I had I would visit the beautiful Berkshires and participate in all the area had to offer. After moving to Florida twenty years ago, and spending portions of each summer in the Berkshires, my wife and I agreed how lovely it would be to own a home there and both use it ourselves and share it with people who also loved the area.
Alan G Billingsley purchased this House in 2013
Why Alan G Billingsley chose Lenox
My wife spent a week in April 2013 looking at every house for sale in the area, and after seeing Hydrangea Hill, knew this was the house she wanted. Most of the end of that year and a good portion of 2014 was spent transforming the house into the home she envisioned. Hydrangea Hill was born. Unfortunately due to a catastrophic illness, she passed away not actually getting to spend a summer and fall in the house, but she did see it completed and for a brief period, participated in very happy gatherings of friends and family at the house. I want to fulfill her wish to share our good fortune by offering the premises to individuals, couples and families where they could feel like our guests, not renters. If I had a motto for Hydrangea Hill, it would be...”Come, Relax, Enjoy!” P.S. All the animal pictures downstairs and bird pictures in one of the guest bedrooms, were taken by my wife while on an African safari in 2004.
What makes this House unique
[Travel & Leisure magazine featured 21 best places in the country to see fall foliage. Coming in at #9 is Lenox. "Hike or bike yourself to Pleasant Valley Sanctuary to see the beautifully vivid colors of this Massachusetts town. Not only are you guaranteed a stunning view, the famous Cranwell Spa is nearby to pamper yourself."] Yankee Magazine's article, "15 Prettiest Winter Villages in New England" begins with Lenox. "Set in the bucolic Berkshire hills, this walking village is renowned for it's architecturally-diverse churches, farm-to-table restaurants, and high-end boutiques selling art, antiques, clothing, jewelry, and crafts." Hydrangea Hill is a short walking distance to downtown Lenox;, five minute car ride to Tanglewood Music Festival and Shakespeare & Company; easily accessible to Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, Berkshire Bach Society, Berkshire Theater Group, Mac-Haydn Theater, Mass MoCA, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Arrowhead, the home of Herman Melville, Chesterwood, home of sculpture artist Daniel Chester French, Norman Rockwell Museum, The Mount, home to Edith Wharton, poet William Cullen Bryant's Homestead, the Berkshire Botanical Garden, The Clark Art Institute, Susan B Anthony Birthplace Museum, and the annual Norman Rockwell Festival in Stockbridge and tree lighting ceremony in Lenox the first weekend of every December . We had a perfect stay. The house was exactly as described, clean, incredibly well-stocked with everything we needed (linens, towels, clean supplies, etc) and on an adorable street with very friendly neighbors. Alan was easy to reach and very responsive. The open layout of the downstairs worked great for our family, and we would happily recommend this home to anyone looking to spend some time in Lenox!
Nothing Short of Perfect
We have stayed at many homes in the Berkshires, and this is one of our absolute favorites. It is obvious that a lot of care and attention to detail was undertaken is preparing this rental. To say the house was well appointed is an understatement. Everything was clean and organized. It truly felt like home. I don’t have any criticism for this property - I would highly recommend staying here.
Your review means a lot to me. Your sentence “It truly felt like home.” captures the spirit and mood I try to convey to all my Hydrangea Hill guests which is “home away from home”. Thank you very much Matt!
Beautiful home in a top location
We just spent the Christmas holiday at Alan’s beautiful home. Not only was it relaxing and comfortable, it was adorned for the holiday, which was a great touch. The open floor plan is so great, and the kitchen is very well equipped, and a pleasure to prepare meals in. Furniture and beds are very comfortable. It is a very short distance to Lenox center, and all the Berkshires has to offer. We really appreciate the attention to detail in the home, and the effort to create a welcoming and beautiful space! Thank you!
Thank you Ann for the wonderful comments. It was a pleasure to have your party at Hydrangea Hill at Christmas. Lenox is beautiful anytime of the year but it's magical during the winter holidays. Please return whenever future travel takes you to the Berkshires. Have a very happy New Year's and a safe and prosperous 2019. Best, Alan
Perfect spot in Lenox
Cozy and warm! We loved our stay and would come back again in a heart beat. Walked to town. Cooked in their beautiful kitchen. Beds were so comfortable. Highly recommend!
Thank you Jennifer for the kind remarks. Your experience mirrors the goals I set everytime when new and repeat guests stay at Hydrangea Hill. Would love to have you again anytime you seek the Berkshire adventure. Best, Alan
Lovely home and wonderful host!
Had a fabulous mother-daughter weekend here! The house was charming, nicely decorated, extremely clean and well stocked with all basics you might need. The kitchen was large and had all the tools, equipment and basic ingredients you would imagine for cooking (and then some!). So nice, we cooked and ate “at home” both nights. Our host, Alan, was as welcoming and helpful as he could be. Each communication felt like it was from a friend. We will definitely stay there again on future visits to Lenox (which, by the way, was our favorite town of the several we visited nearby).
Thank you Carole for the warm comments. Mini-family gatherings are some of my favorite guests and so glad you and your daughters enjoyed your “leaf-peeping” getaway. I’ll leave the lights on for your next visit! 🙂 Alan
Perfectly appointed home, lovely stay
The house was just like the pictures, classic, comfortable, and had everything one could need. An excellent location as well. Thank you!
Thank you Courtney for your kind and warm words. I would love to have you and yours visit Hydrangea House sometime again in the future. Happy travels, Alan
