About Melissa Zodda
I am a landscape designer for the last 20 years from Buffalo, New York (originally from NJ). I decided to move to Gulfport after many years of visiting. I traded the snow for four seasons of sailing and sunshine. I currently enjoy sailing my 23' Compac sailboat, kayaking, fishing off the Skyway Pier and snorkeling off Fort DeSoto State Park coastline (among many, many other awesome places).
Melissa Zodda purchased this Bungalow in 2015
Why Melissa Zodda chose Gulfport
At first the location is what I loved about this property. Then it was the house's rich history that really sold me! While not having much architectural details left to preserve, I am able to at least continue its story for many years to come. In 1921, a hurricane had demolished the Gulfport Casino. From that lumber, my house was constructed and known as 'The White House'. There were very few houses at this time. The builder was the Mayor, Nathan McKinney, who built it as a wedding gift for his daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and Leander White. Leander's mother was the daughter of the very first settlers of Gulfport, the Barnett Family). With great appreciation for the volunteers at the Gulfport Historical Society (well worth a visit), I was able to find original photographs of the house which I have kept to its integrity as best I can.
What makes this Bungalow unique
There's not a bad seat in the house! The views of tropical shrubs and palms, sweet smells of orange blossoms along with the sound of the many birds that enjoy the area (especially the parrots!) - entertain the senses. The bay breeze carries the smell of Stella's getting ready for the brunch crowd. In the morning, you can sit in the front shady garden at the bistro and enjoy your coffee and the friendly faces walking by. Then you can choose to sit in the large private backyard later in the day and enjoy the winding paths of mature tropicals, cactus, birds and plentiful fruit trees. The early part of the year is best for pink grapefruit picking along with the two kinds of oranges. The location couldn't be better! All the exciting life of Gulfport, but also the peaceful setting. Its the kind of place that you just don't feel like getting in the car - its a real vacation.
A well-maintained old house in a quiet community
A pleasant old house, charmingly decorated, and comfortable.
The owner, Ms. Zodda, provided information about the history of the house, community, and places to enjoy. The commercial hub, municipal parks, and beach were a few-minutes walk away.
As old houses go, there were matters to become accustomed to. One bathroom, moderately loud window air-conditioners, stubborn doors, and untrimmed yard palms along walkways. The charm of the house and neighborhood, though, made up for the annoyances.
Ms. Zodda was easy to correspond with and accommodating. She was one of the very few vacation-home owners who permitted a pet, which, as well as location and appearance, was the main reason I rented her place.
Awesome property! The cottage was clean and well maintained. The location was perfect for us. It was within walking distance to a pier, beach, dog park, restaurants and shopping. We loved the large fenced in back yard for our dogs. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay.
Lived the decor, landscaping, backyard, bicycles, and location.
I would stay here again.
