It's difficulty to verbalize what five days at Spruce House in Pagosa Springs meant to our family. We arrived at Spruce House with Gayle waiting at the gate to show us the family home they now shared with others. The smell of blue spruce and aspens outside mingled with the fragrance of the fresh cut flowers inside as we witnessed the hummingbirds flocking to the bright red nectar at the feeders suspended near the kitchen window. I was amazed at the clarity of the windows which brought the outdoors into the interior of the house. Gayle's husband Tom showed us the grounds with a private stocked pond, a hand-dug canal adding to the rustling waters of the San Juan River campsite with a rock lined fire pit, picnic table, lawn chairs, split log benches and a horseshoe court. A plastic container was thoughtfully filled with newspaper, wood matches and dry kindling to compliment the stacked firewood provided for the campfire. We arrived midday and spent the first evening testing our poles and bait at the small pond and cooking dogs by the fire before snuggling under the down comforter on a comfortable bed under the open windows allowing the cool breeze and sounds of the mountain valley.

Gayle and Tom provided information on sites to take our kayaks and places to hike and rock climb (for our son and his girlfriend) as well as excellent information and sources for fishing spots and tips. We used the Spruce House as a springboard to explore the wonders of the Piedras River, Wolf Creek Pass and the San Luis Valley as well as Creede on the day of the fourth and Pagosa Springs for the night of fireworks returning each evening to the comforts of the cabin on the San Juan. The house is stocked with everything needed from linens to cooking utensils and dinnerware and even a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen counter. The large expanse of lawn in front of the cabin allowed for tossing the Frisbee while grilling chicken on the barbeque pit provided with charcoal and even the lighter fluid. Tom and Gayle would check in with us to see if there was anything we needed as well as visiting with us and sharing the history of the area and their experience for settling in this wonderful scenic area. We have found a new vacation home for the future and new friends for a lifetime! We highly recommend the Spruce House for anyone wanting a Colorado escape!

Wonderful owners and beautiful place!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this little cabin. We were looking for a place with convenience to Pagosa Springs but not in Pagosa. The grounds were kept really nice and the abundance of hummingbirds were a joy to watch while relaxing on the front porch with coffee. The peaceful river made cookouts and wading a fun afternoon activity. Tom and Gayle were extremely nice people and made us feel very at ease upon our arrival by showing us the property and answering any questions we had of the area. They were just a phone call away if we needed anything or had any questions. We really enjoyed our visits with Gayle and her extensive knowledge of the area. Thank you Tom and Gayle for sharing your beautiful place with us, it made the long awaited visit with our son and daughter-in-law that much more memorable!

Wonderful Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

VERY COMFORTABLE cabin on the San Juan River and relatively close to town. This was our first trip to Pagosa Springs and the owners were wonderful! Gayle and Tom gave us lots of advice on what to do/see while we were visiting -which was much appreciated! They had their lovely cabin perfectly equipped for preparing meals. We took advantage of the charcoal grill (complete with charcoal) and firewood/kindling for the fire pit (where we cooked a lovely early morning breakfast one day while enjoying the river). The front porch is incredibly inviting and a fabulous place to curl up with a book and a glass of wine at the end of the day, a place to eat your meals outdoors and/or to watch the hummingbirds. Another option is to take your refreshments and sit in a chair around the fire pit by the river. Heavenly!! The beds/pillows were super comfy and we loved sleeping with all the windows open. Lots of closet space for clothes/gear. Nice open living space. Internet was handy and television was available although we preferred being outside. Gayle added lovely little touches such as fresh flowers and fruit and both of them were nearby if anything was needed. We would highly recommend their home for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and wants a clean, cozy place to relax after a day of fun. Thanks so much for letting us be the first renters this year!! -- the Sorensen's and the Ferrell's!!

Our first visit was so wonderful that we decided to make another trip to the Spruce House. After being Gayle and Tom's first guests at the Spruce House earlier this Summer we wanted to get back to Pagosa even sooner than we were able to. Once again they thought of everything to make this trip even better than the last, if that could be possible. This place is truly magical, from the deer in the yard to the numerous fly overs from the Geese teaching their broods to fly in formation. The peacefulness and privacy of the huge manicured area behind the house to making the short trek to the river where we never saw another sole. Did I mention the fishing in the San Jaun right on the property, even if I had not caught anything it would have been special. The Trout were fat and sassy, in fact the first one I caught fought so hard that I thought that I had snagged him. They were all beauties. What a place this is, from the house to the grounds to our hosts, it is so comfortable that it is a very special retreat indeed. We can't wait to get back again. The most heart felt thanks to Gayle and Tom for making the Spruce House available for our enjoyment.

Owner's Response: Tim, Debbie, and your beautiful girl Rottweilers: Your visit to Spruce House was truly OUR pleasure. I'm so glad the fish came out to play. And that the geese were practicing and the deer came by to say Hello. I kno reviews don't work this way, but IF we could review our guests your family, complete with 2 big Rottweiler girls, would rank more stars than could be printed. I thought Spruce House was clean when you came. I believe it was cleaner when you left. And thank you for your beautiful words. They truly make our hearts happy. Tom and Gayle

So many wonderful places to visit...Spruce House is only 2 miles from access to San Juan National Forest, where trails and rivers abound. Wemininuche Wilderness Area, as well as the South San Juan Wilderness area can be reached in an easy 30 minutes. Play in the East Fork or West Fork of the San Juan. On the East Fork you'll find Silver Falls and lots of trout. (Hit the down arrow and read on.)

Spectacular! Explore Summitville, an old mining town within an hour's drive. Check out beautiful Alberta Lake, just below Wolf Creek Ski Area and a short 20 miles from your home at Spruce House.

Spend a day enjoying a ride from Chama N..M. to Antonita CO on the Cumbres-Toltec Railroad, complete with gorgeous scenery and an old fashioned steam engine.

If you're here at high water time (May-June) river rafting is a favorite. When the river waters recede to seasonal levels you can tube the San Juan for a wet and wild experience. Not too wild for kids 6 and up, or for some of us...60 and up.

The possibilities for vacation adventure range from mild to wild, with something for everyone who enjoys the outdoors and the majestic mountains. And it's all easily accessed from your comfy cabin on the San Juan River.
