ABOUT THE AREA: You will want to spend several days in beautiful Ouray County. Ouray, which is known as the "Switzerland of America," is nestled in a small valley with 360-degree views of 12,000-14,000 mountains. Ridgway, nicknamed the "Gateway to the San Juans," is just 10 miles from Ouray and is well-known as the place where the John Wayne movie "True Grit" was filmed. Many of the movie set's buildings are still used today by local businesses. These two historic towns offer a variety of activities: restaurants, shops, museums, galleries, hot springs pools, jeep rentals, hiking, fishing and boating -- the list goes on and on! Day trips to Silverton, Telluride and Durango are fun as well.
Ouray is also often called "The Jeeping Capital of the World" because of its many trails through the high country (rated easy to rugged), popular for 2-wheel and 4-wheel off road vehicles.
Golf is available at beautiful Divide Ranch Golf Club located on Log Hill Mesa just above Ridgway, offering panoramic mountain views. Telluride and Montrose also have golf courses.
Ouray and Ridgway both offer local markets, and you can find larger stores like City Market, Safeway, Target and Walmart in Montrose, a flat, easy drive 35 miles from Ouray, 25 miles from Ridgway.
No matter how long you decide to stay, you will find yourself wanting to come back again and again to Ouray County, one of the most beautiful places on earth!
We had a wonderful two days in this cabin. It is perfectly situated to visit both Telluride and Ouray. You can take a great hike right out the front door. Wildlife, wildflowers and stars abound. I have never enjoyed a hot tub or a cup of morning coffee so much. This house had everything we needed. It was clean and well appointed. We want to return.
I enjoyed the house. Very soft bed and pillows. Hope to stay there again. Two minor points to improve, not in the heart of complaining, just feedback. The front door lock is difficult to lock/unlock. Had to use the back door. The curtains in the bedroom don't do enough to keep out the sun. One window doesn't have a curtain or blinds. Lastly I want to say again I loved the deck, the quiet location and view. Hope I have reason and opportunity to rent it again.
We absolutely loved the privacy and the deck and amazing views. The bed was comfortable, the owner had a great collection of books providing information on the area, and the hot tub, and washer and dryer were nice amenities.
The stair rail at the top of the stairs was a safety issue for young and old alike. When we arrived the railing at the top two stairs was folded back, probably to alert you to the fact that it was on a hinge and not secure. The option then was to not have a railing at the top or relying on a railing on a hinge, and should you lose your balance the railing could flip back. We were very cautious on the stairs and tried to limit the trips up and down. The stairs also block the view of the television from the table and are situated right in the middle of the room. A curiosity was there was a full length clear glass window in the bathroom with no curtain (forgo your modesty, although the grounds are very private) While there was wifi, the signal was not strong enough for us to watch videos on our Kindle Fire.
If we were to return we would take lamps to be able to read in the living room, a fan and a non-stick fry pan.
Having said all that, the cabin's views and setting were absolutely remarkable and we would consider returning. If it had not been for handrail issue I would have given the property a 5 star rating.
Great place to stay, the pictures don't do it justice. The views are amazing and we really enjoyed the solitude and hot tub. Very comfortable and everything we needed! Thanks for the great stay!
