About Sandy Scotton

My husband and I met in South America, I moved to Alaska in 1994 and our adventures have continued to this day. We built this place while living in a tent on the property in 1999. We got married (on the property) during the summer of construction and lived here for 4 years. We moved across the state for work in an even more remote place, but our hearts still live here! We maintain close relationships with the great folks in Gakona! We have never rented this to tourists before last summer, but as travelers and adventurers ourselves, we know this is an outstanding place to base your Alaskan adventures from! The Wrangell St. Elias National park, the Nabesna Road, McCarthy, and Valdez are all destinations you can reach while staying at our place. Salmon fishing is within two miles!

Sandy Scotton purchased this house in 1999

Why Sandy Scotton chose Gakona

We built it, we got married here, we love the mountains! You will too. Check it out, stay a week! The views from our windows are OUTSTANDING!!

What makes this house unique

You'll have tv and wi-fi, cell phone towers are near-by. There is river rafting and king salmon fishing within minutes on the Gulkana and Klutina Rivers. Just down the road is the best restaurant in the Copper Basin, the historic Carriage House. You will be on the door step of Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest park in the nation. We can hook you up with local deals and incredible flightseeing!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hey, this is us.. the owners. We traveled to Gakona with our three kids in early may to make a few improvements to the place and get ready for the summer season. Wow, it was great weather from day 1 to 5 and the Mountains were Spectacular! We installed a new mosquito killing machine, a brand new refrigerator, and put together a new full Sized BBQ grill. The most gratifying part of the trip was reading all the comments left by guests from last year in the book we leave there for that purpose. Virtually everyone loved the place, and commented that the pictures do not do the place justice on the Website. We thank all of our previous guests and hope that folks have a great time in the Copper Basin this year!

Rustic, yet has everything you need, including awesome views!

  • 4 of 5

This place is a get away from all the tourist that are on the Denali side. Six of us stayed here for 2 nights after coming from Denali. Denali was socked in with clouds for 3 days and when we arrived here, the first thing we saw was the clear view of the Wrangell Mts. They were awesome and just the few clouds that lingered for the 2 days made it for even more intriguing views. The house was stocked with everything we needed for the 2 days and we were provided with extra sleeping pads/mattress. We did not use the firepit or the grills provided. We did have an issue the last night and had to call the owners but they made it right. We did not see a checklist, or contact # in house (or maybe we missed it somehow.) That would be helpful for future renters if the onsite managers are gone (which was our case and I just happened to have the owners ph # with me). Overall a lovely place to stay.

Awesome view!

  • 5 of 5

We got to the house just in time to enjoy the awesome view before two days of rain set in on the area. We could have looked at the mountains over and over but it wasn’t to be. Cabin is located in a peaceful, relaxing location. Loved the cabin’s layout for our party of five. Even with a lot of rain, we had a nice time together in the cabin. Very accommodating!

Great cabin with awesome view.

We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin.

It's quite and secluded with tremendous views.

The full kitchen, grill and washer/dryer REALLY came in handy.

We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay!!!

Overall, this is a very nice cabin. Nice furniture and comfortable beds. Clean /attractive rooms

This cabin was our base for day trips. Loved the drive to Vadez and museum there. The views on Denali Rd. we're exceptional. Also found many trails in National Park for hiking. The Carriage House Restaurant had great dinners. Lots of mosquitoes! I would not bring children because of the extremely high bluff and extremely sad that house is leaning because it is so nice inside. Renters should be aware that there are no shkades and curtains to darken rooms at night during spring and summer.

We live 500 miles away, but our neighbors (who lived in this house for 2 years) are on the 3 acres next door, and they will be your local hosts and deal with any issues or concerns. Leann will make sure your stay is all that you hope for, and we will be available by phone or email whenever needed. She is available to greet you and offer you some opportunities to experience the "local" culture and ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.
