Here time and nature move to a greater rhythm. Hana is nearby- a little town on the backside of Maui that is just about as far away as one could hope to travel... and still return. When it comes to natural attractions, Hana is blessed above all others. You can visit black, white, and red sand beaches and swim in luxurious waterfalls.
The gardens which surround the property offer a delightful, but seasonal, array of papaya, mango, banana, breadfruit, avocado, ginger, jasmine and plumeria. The organic garden seasonally produces salad mix and fresh herbs.
The cottage has abundant natural light, white walls, white ceilings with fans. Living area has TV / DVD player, lounge chair, couch, and love-seat, as well as wooden dining table - accommodates two, as only a king bed. Cottage has a full kitchen and BBQ. Bathroom with shower / tub combination and washer / dryer.
We spent a lovely five nights here, going out on adventures in Hana and Kipahulu by day. It's a convenient location for a base to enjoy all of Hana.
The cottage is very much a home. The layout is logical and gives two people plenty if space. The bed was really comfortable. We loved going to sleep and waking to the sounds of nature, as if we were in a treehouse surrounded by the living art that is the Hawaiian rainforest. From the bedroom, there are floor to ceiling sliding doors and windows three sides, and all you see are beautiful green plants of all shapes and sizes, top to bottom.
I was surprised at how quiet it is at night. Just the nighttime birds & insects and the breeze blowing through the leaves.
One of the best things about the house is that it is completely screened in, every door and window, even the porch, which is a double screen because the house is screened as well. I was a little anxious about bugs in Hana, because mosquitoes love me and their bites leave me in agony for days. I didn't get one single bite here. I did wear long sleeves and long pants at sunset and night and used a little lemongrass essential oil. We were also careful to keep the house lights low at sunset and early evening.
We enjoyed making our own meals & smoothies in the little kitchen. It includes a full size refrigerator/freezer (with ice maker), oven, stove, grill (outside), Ninja blender, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven and plenty of good utensils, glasses, mugs, and dishes.
The bathroom and shower were good. Good water pressure, usually as hot as we wanted or at least warm (solar powered). Plenty of extra towels and a washer and dryer. A couple times the toilet was finicky and didn't flush quite right but it worked after two flushes.
There were just a few critter encounters inside the house, which we expect in the tropics. A gecko set off the smoke alarm, zipping in and out. There were also some tiny ants. I really did not mind these at all so long as nothing bit me. There were actually far fewer indoor creatures than I have experienced in other Hawaiian homes.
The wifi and tv worked fine. Lots of reading material, too.
We walked across the street to the Venus Pool twice - so nice to have beautiful swimming hole so close to us!
Ohana Cottage has everything you need and more. It is a beautiful retreat, nicely maintained and fully furnished and equipped.
The Owner Sybil's goal was to make her Ohana a healing place and she completely nails it!
The location is perfect across from the Venus Pool which I enjoyed swimming in during the evenings and mornings. The view from the bedroom is simply beautiful with lush plants and a nearby stream. The Owner is a talented artist who has displayed her work in the Ohana. The art is beautiful and the furnishings were a reflection of her creativity. Sybil and Tracy were very sweet and helpful when we locked ourselves out of the unit. This is the perfect Hana getaway to seek solace. I would definitely come again and recommend it to a friend!
My partner and I are Maui residents and spent two nights in this rental and had a great and easy Maui getaway. The cottage is very well located to all popular sites in the Hana area -- Hamoa Beach, Venus Pool (located within walking distance right across the street), Haleakala State Park, etc., etc. The cottage is secluded in a beautifully landscaped property and very well furnished. Wifi was great for those who prioritize that. Mahalo Sybil and Tracy for your hospitality.
My husband and I spent 4 nights at the beautiful Ohana House. It has a wonderful spacious setup with sliding doors throughout so you feel like you are outside. Very relaxing and peaceful - close to All area attractions. Red sand beach a must and walking across street to watch great sunrises. Sybil and Tracy were gracious and helpful. Highly recommend.
My husband and I recently visited Maui and we wanted to experience Hana for a few nights! The stay in Sybil's place added to the great experience we had! The drive to Hana could take only 2 hours from Paia, but knowing we had a place to stay, we were able to enjoy the drive, stop at a few places, explore, and find hidden natural beauties along the way. By the way, if anyone is interested in driving the road to Hana, try downloading Gypsy Guide (an app). It was a great tour guide both for the drive there and the drive back!
When we got to Sybil's place we were greeted by Tracy, a wonderful person who immediately gave us tips about the area. Sybil and Tracy were both very kind and offered any help. They even let us borrow snorkeling gear and gave us directions to the red sand beach (my most favorite of the trip, def. recommended). The place was very spacious, filled with lots of natural light. It was clean and inviting! Also, has everything you need including a washer and dryer (in unit)!
The place is located just right after the town of Hana, 20 minutes from the Ohe'o gulch and right across the way from the venus pools! The venus pool was great especially to those who are interested in cliff diving! Right when you pull into the driveway, you will be welcomed by a lush garden full of great exotic plants and flowers. You will def feel like you are in the middle of the rainforest in your own private oasis!
Thank you Sybil for such a great place to stay in Hana! It was great meeting both you and Tracy. All your Lahaina recommendations were great! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us and giving us all the local information. See you soon! Mahalo!
Thank you Sybil for such beautiful and comfortable accommodations! Loved the spaciousness and decor that fits in with being in a rainforest. Your great directions helped us find the place easily. We really loved the fact that we could open all the sliding doors and yet be free of insects since they are all screened. What I'd wished we'd known is that the Veus pools were within walking distance!
