About Brenda K. Ellison

Hello, my name is Brenda and my husband’s name is Mike. Welcome to Peaceful Properties--Your choice for a green and serene stay. I love what I do and you can count on me being very responsive, approachable, and easy to work with all of which my guests have commented. Our homes are clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. I believe in reinvesting the revenue into the home and property. At some point we may sell this gorgeous home and property and want it to be better than we found it.

My husband and I are retired Army officers serving for 24 and 30 years respectively. We both love this area and plan to make it our permanent home in the near future. There is no other place in the area that has the benefits of viewing both mountain ranges; the Massanutten on the west and the Shenandoah on the east with the South Fork of the beautiful and peaceful Shenandoah River running between these green mountains. An awesome sight when you see eagles or osprey flying high, deer and turkeys running through the woods, and an occasional bear to remind you that you are in Page County and the Luray area. We hope you enjoy your stay at Peaceful Properties. It is a magnificently beautiful area especially on a clear night with the stars you cannot see nearer the cities.

Why Brenda K. Ellison chose Shenandoah Valley

When we purchased this home it was marketed as an "average" view. My husband immediately saw the potential beautiful view off the large deck. After clearing the overgrowth and some of the trash trees which we used in the fire pit and fireplace, we saw an outstanding, magnificent view. My favorite bird, the pileated woodpecker which looks just like "Woody the Woodpecker" inhabits the surrounding forests. We have the best of both worlds--mountains and river. We love this area so much that we are building a home in the neighborhood. I think you will enjoy it also.

What makes this house unique

Brown Bear Retreat is your perfect haven, a spacious and comfortable home with newly renovated bathrooms and kitchen to base out of or just relax in place. Bamboo flooring with new furnishings enhance your very comfortable stay. Set on a ridge overlooking the Massanutten range with a beautiful 15 mile view. The river whispers and shadows play over the mountains, birds flitter, hummingbirds spar and eagles soar as you wind down on the large, full length deck overlooking the 9 acres of this beautiful property. Enjoy the same mountain views from the Sundance Maxxus Spa.

Shenandoah Valley Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Perched on the side of the mountain, the home and expansive deck have views that make it seem like a treehouse. Though not right on the river, access is easy and canoe and kayaks (and pfd's) are provided. We fished the river one afternoon and caught (and released) 10-12 small-mouth bass and a few perch. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely home. The only change I could suggest is to add wall sconces on both sides of the beds, as we are all avid readers and love to read in bed. That was a minor inconvenience and I would not hesitate to recommend this home to anyone wanting to explore the rich history and stunning scenery of the Valley.

Owner's Response: Such a beautifully written review! I really like your recommendation on the lights. Thank you for that. Not sure we can do the wall sconces but an LED clip on light should work. I can start with two of the rooms and maybe set them out so our guests can choose where to use them and not bump their heads. It was a pleasure meeting you and it seems your party had a great time on the river based on your fish count. Hope you can return to the area from Texas! Safe travels to you and your loved ones. Happy birthday! Brown Bear Retreat is one of three Green...Serene homes of Peaceful Properties.

We had a lovely time here! The house was very clean and the views didn't disappoint. If floating down the river is what you want to do be sure to bring two cars or make arrangement with a local guiding company that can take you back to your vehicle because walking to and from the house from the river is a very long walk.

Peaceful, beautiful setting. Great escape!

Wonderful for R&R, yet close to plenty to do! We used the tubes provided and floated our cares away on the peaceful river. Would've liked to use the kayaks, but our stay was too short! :( We did enjoy the firepit, s'mores and spacious hot tub! The house had evverything we could think of, which was awesome! Great stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of your getaway at Brown Bear Retreat. I am thrilled you enjoyed the home and its amenities and the float down the river. Plenty to do in this area and you need at least a week. You never know when you'll see a bear, eagle, or deer. Bear have been scarce this year because of the very lushness and plentiful food around. I think they are here but I have not yet seen one bear this year. My guests have seen bear on the SNP highway. Thanks for being a great guest and we welcome you back anytime. Beautiful tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

Brenda was fantastic and the and place was absolutely beautiful. The setting was perfect for a family of 6 and a romantic stay for 2. I loved the kitchen and the deck had the best views in the valley. The area had a lot of wild life (more bunnies than we could count) but nothing that came too close. Loved using the fire pit and the grill. There's a hot tub as well but I have to admit we didn't use it - just never got around to it. We will definitely be back and looking forward to staying again! Perfect vacation stay - also the internet was perfect for the "working-vacation" mode....definitely recommend!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your most gracious review. The picture window is like a piece of art as it frames the Massanutten mountains. The deck is high enough to get the depth of view and large enough to be part of nature. Many bunnies this year due to the mild winter, plentiful food, and less prey. We appreciate how you cared for the property and most of all enjoyed it as we hoped. You were awesome guests and we hope you can return to enjoy the area. Peaceful Properties are Green...Serene.

Amazing Retreat in the Shenandoah Valley

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family weekend at the Brown Bear Retreat. Brenda was extremely easy to work with and answered all of my questions before we booked the trip. She even left treats to welcome us when we arrived. The house was exactly as advertised and has a beautiful new well-stocked kitchen and bathrooms. It was perfect for our family and we ate most of our meals out on the deck enjoying the beautiful view! It was peaceful and quiet, a great break from our busy lives in Houston. We hope to be able to come back to the Shenandoah Valley again. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us. Sara and Robert Henson and family

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your wonderful review of your stay at Brown Bear Retreat. Even though there are no brown bear in the area, we call it so because of the color of the home. Houston is a long way to travel but we are so glad you decided to have your family get together at this property. We hope you can return again to enjoy the area. The local people are so nice and friendly. We are almost permanently moved here and I am in a slice of heaven for sure. Y'all come back, y'hear. Green...Serene.

Fabulous Property

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. It had all the amenities we could possibly have needed. We all enjoyed a wonderful peaceful weekend enjoying the sights. We spent a good part of our time just sitting on the deck enjoying the peace and quiet and then a dip in the hot tub. The banana bread in the freezer on our arrival was a wonderful surprise and delicious. Our son declared it to be the best he'd had :) I can't think of anything we would have changed --- other than the number of days we stayed. We will most definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your beautiful review. I appreciate how you cared for the home and that you enjoyed the quick bread. I love baking and it's fun to provide different goodies for my guests. I think you could probably just spend the whole time sitting on the deck watching the mountains. I'm disappointed we have not seen much wildlife this year. I'm sure bear are there. It's so lush one would not know. This home is not yet finished. We have plans to improve the upstairs bedroom (king) which is currently closed. It has a full bath and plenty of storage. Additionally, we are putting a bedroom and bath downstairs as well. This will be the larger party home for family or friend get togethers. Thanks for choosing Brown Bear Retreat for your family vacation. It is one of three Peaceful Properties vacation homes and cabins. Green...Serene.
