About Brenda K. Ellison

Hello, my name is Brenda and my husband’s name is Mike. Welcome to Peaceful Properties--Your choice for a green and serene stay. My husband and I are retired Army officers serving for 24 and 30 years respectively. We both love this area and plan to make it our permanent home in the near future. There is no other place in the area that has the benefits of viewing both mountain ranges; the Massanutten on the west and the Shenandoah on the east with the South Fork of the beautiful and peaceful Shenandoah River running between these green mountains. An awesome sight when you see eagles or osprey flying high, deer and turkeys running through the woods, and an occasional bear to remind you that you are in Page County and the Luray area. We hope you enjoy your stay at Peaceful Properties. It is a magnificently beautiful area especially on a clear night with the stars you cannot see nearer the cities.

Brenda K. Ellison purchased this house in 2007

Why Brenda K. Ellison chose Shenandoah Valley

When we purchased this home it was marketed as an "average" view. My husband immediately saw the potential beautiful view off the large deck. After clearing the overgrowth and some of the trash trees which we used in the fire pit and fireplace, we saw an outstanding, magnificent view. My favorite bird, the pileated woodpecker which looks just like "Woody the Woodpecker" inhabits the surrounding forests. We have the best of both worlds--mountains and river. We love this area so much that we are building a home in the neighborhood. I think you will enjoy it also.

What makes this house unique

Brown Bear Retreat is your perfect haven, a spacious and comfortable home to base out of or just relax in place. Set on a ridge overlooking the Massanutten range with a beautiful 15 mile view. The river whispers and shadows play over the mountains, birds flitter, hummingbirds spar and eagles soar as you wind down on the large, full length deck overlooking the 9 acres of this beautiful property. Enjoy the same mountain views from the Sundance Maxxus Spa.

Amazing Retreat in the Shenandoah Valley

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family weekend at the Brown Bear Retreat. Brenda was extremely easy to work with and answered all of my questions before we booked the trip. She even left treats to welcome us when we arrived. The house was exactly as advertised and has a beautiful new well-stocked kitchen and bathrooms. It was perfect for our family and we ate most of our meals out on the deck enjoying the beautiful view! It was peaceful and quiet, a great break from our busy lives in Houston. We hope to be able to come back to the Shenandoah Valley again. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us. Sara and Robert Henson and family

Fabulous Property

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. It had all the amenities we could possibly have needed. We all enjoyed a wonderful peaceful weekend enjoying the sights. We spent a good part of our time just sitting on the deck enjoying the peace and quiet and then a dip in the hot tub. The banana bread in the freezer on our arrival was a wonderful surprise and delicious. Our son declared it to be the best he'd had :) I can't think of anything we would have changed --- other than the number of days we stayed. We will most definitely be back!

a wondrful peaceful get-a-way

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Brenda for some peace of mind. We live such a busy life here in New Jersey. Still working though just retired I wanted a quiet place to relax and enjoy the mountains I so love. Brown Bear Retreat was everything and more. The cabin is stocked with everything you could need. Beds very comfortable. Gorgeous kitchen. We had no trouble with our cell phones. My husband and I have Verizon and My son and his girlfriend have AT&T. My son joined us for a few days and they loved it. Its like stepping out of stress. We didn't even hear a car door slam. I woke to the gorgeous mountain scenery. What a view. The whirlpool was also wonderful. Thank you for the nut bread you left for us. Though I didn't see my "bear", maybe next time when we return in September. Sincerely Mary and Robert Stacey

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of your family getaway at Brown Bear Retreat. Sorry about the bear. I have yet to see any either this year and I know they are there especially now with the abundance of berries. Yes, if you hear a car door slam it is probably yours. An occasional "moo", wook-wook-wook-wook-wook of the pileated woodpecker, and soaring eagle and osprey teaching their young to fly if you are so lucky to experience that. We will see you in September at Peaceful River which you will love I'm sure. Thanks again. Peaceful Properties...Green...Serene.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The Brown Bear Retreat is one of the best places we've visited in the last decade in the Shenandoah area. Nicely located with a great views from the balcony, dining room or hot tab.

Very, very clean. With no ugly and cheap prints on the walls but with cozy furniture, nice beds and bathrooms. The kitchen is well equipped, so you don’t have to bring any kitchenware if you decided to cook in the cabin.

The place is very secluded and calm. We enjoyed watching deer and rabbits in the morning and birds and mountains all day long.

A complimentary firewood was a pleasant surprise.

Hot tab is perfectly located and has a rain proof cover on top. You can stay in it whatever the weather is. The hot tab itself is a bit warn out, not all jets are working, and the water needs some additional filtering.

We liked the place a lot and we are definitely planning to be back.

Thank you very much.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very thoughtful review of Brown Bear Retreat. The hot tub jets work intermittently for some reason. My husband will try to problem solve this beast, the Maxxus hot tub. So large you can swim in it. Thanks for pointing out the vinyl overhead cover. Our intent is to screen in that area for better bug control. No one has reported bear yet but we know they are there according to our neighbors. Nope, no cheap prints. In fact, we have yet to put any back on the wall since the very extensive renovation. Thanks for choosing to stay at Brown Bear Retreat, one of three very unique homes of Peaceful Properties...Green...Serene.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of your stay at Brown Bear Retreat. I have got to get the professional photographer out there. The renovation took so long (which is a good and bad thing) that it bled into other projects and I have yet to get a professional photographer. That is my next priority for this very lovely, immaculately clean (thanks to Amanda, the housekeeper), and beautifully placed property. Thanks again for staying. Green...Serene are Peaceful Properties cabin homes.

Amazing view, quiet location, beautifully renovated interior!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our stay here! The owner, Brenda, went out of her way to make us feel at home with thoughtful touches around the house -- things like a container of smores fixings for the fire pit! The cabin had been recently renovated and every single room was done beautifully. We couldn't have been happier with our stay. Very much looking forward to coming back again to enjoy the quiet and the beautiful views!

Owner's Response: Thank you kindly for your wonderful review. I love what I do and I love to help our guests enjoy their stay. They deserve it! We make our homes as though we would live in them at any time. I'm pretty picky so I like to have the kitchen well-stocked, comfortable beds, relaxing living room, and most of all--clean homes. I could not do this without the help of my wonderful housekeeper, Amanda; my awesome husband, Mike; and our make it happen guy, Michael who does everything from painting, minor repair, and maintenance. Thank you all and many thanks for you choosing to stay at one of my Peaceful Properties homes. Green...Serene
