About Brenda K. Ellison

Hello, my name is Brenda and my husband’s name is Mike. Welcome to Peaceful Properties--Your choice for a green and serene stay. My husband and I are retired Army officers serving for 24 and 30 years respectively. We both love this area and plan to make it our permanent home in the near future. There is no other place in the area that has the benefits of viewing both mountain ranges; the Massanutten on the west and the Shenandoah on the east with the South Fork of the beautiful and peaceful Shenandoah River running between these green mountains. An awesome sight when you see eagles or osprey flying high, deer and turkeys running through the woods, and an occasional bear to remind you that you are in Page County and the Luray area. We hope you enjoy your stay at Peaceful Properties. It is a magnificently beautiful area especially on a clear night with the stars you cannot see nearer the cities.

Brenda K. Ellison purchased this house in 2007

Why Brenda K. Ellison chose Shenandoah Valley

When we purchased this home it was marketed as an "average" view. My husband immediately saw the potential beautiful view off the large deck. After clearing the overgrowth and some of the trash trees which we used in the fire pit and fireplace, we saw an outstanding, magnificent view. My favorite bird, the pileated woodpecker which looks just like "Woody the Woodpecker" inhabits the surrounding forests. We have the best of both worlds--mountains and river. We love this area so much that we are building a home in the neighborhood. I think you will enjoy it also.

What makes this house unique

Brown Bear Retreat is your perfect haven, a spacious and comfortable home to base out of or just relax in place. Set on a ridge overlooking the Massanutten range with a beautiful 15 mile view. The river whispers and shadows play over the mountains, birds flitter, hummingbirds spar and eagles soar as you wind down on the large, full length deck overlooking the 9 acres of this beautiful property. Enjoy the same mountain views from the Sundance Maxxus Spa.

Awesome time!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a long weekend at Brown Bear Retreat. Perfect! The house is so cozy and inviting. I loved the couch throw blankets so much I bought a set for us to have at home :)

Close to all the nearby sites.

Very detailed notes and instructions which I appreciated as every potential question is already answered! The views from the deck are wonderful! We had such a great time.

Nice Home

  • 4 of 5

Brown Bear Retreat was a nice, comfortable home with a lovely view from the deck. The home was well kept and well stocked. Located not far from the downtown area of Luray and Shenandoah National Park it was perfect for our families fall mini-vacation. The hot tub was a wonderful treat after a day of hiking. My only complaint would be that the stay was a bit pricey due to the fact that this owner charges per person per night beyond the first two renters. I had not had that experience before from any of the other owners I had rented homes from. I wouldn't let that keep me from renting again some time in the future if the home met our needs but I might shop around a bit more first.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review. I think if you do the research you will find that most owners price their homes at a base rate and then add cost per person over that rate in this area. This is the normal business practice so you know exactly what you are paying for. Most owners also allow two children 17 or 16 and under free of charge. So there are some trade offs. I have to inform guests that the pricing model for this geographical area is not like the Beach model where there is a flat fee for up to so many guests. Of course, that flat rate includes costs to cover the additional guests. Additionally, if you find less costly homes which allow many guests, most likely the homes are not well-maintained as they are overused. I would have appreciated a conversation about your concern as I perceived that there were no problems and I am very accessible. Thanks for choosing Brown Bear Retreat and hope you return to the area. Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at peaceful river. That is exactly what it was too. The leaves were just as beautiful changing this year as they were last. We really enjoyed family time in the newly renovated kitchen, the stove is just amazing. After hiking a couple days in The Shenanndoah Valley the hot tub was nice for our sore bodies. We enjoyed every minute of our stay at peacful river and can not wait till next time.

Cozy and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable, clean cabin in the woods off a private dirt road. The owner, Brenda, was very responsive and easy to work with from booking through arrival. We had a lovely time greeting the baby goats down the street and relaxing by the campfire with wood that our host had carefully set aside and shielded from the days of rain that preceded our visit. Sadly, we didn't ever find time to enjoy the hot tub as we were hiking and biking all weekend. Worth noting that the entrance to Shenandoah park is about a 20 minute drive.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review of your stay at Brown Bear Retreat. This home is beautifully situated to view the Massanutten mountains and have close proximity to one of our finest National Parks and the Luray Caverns. Yes, my husband is very careful to ensure our guests have firewood which is dry, newspaper and kindling to light the fire, and a sign on your specific can of firewood. So glad you enjoyed the fire and making S'mores. I hope you can return to enjoy the home and this beautiful area again. Peaceful Properties are Green...Serene.

Perfect Fall Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a great time at the cabin over a weekend in September! Everything was very well thought-out: from the firewood allocated to us, to the S'more ingredients, to the treats in the freezer, we felt very welcomed and comfortable in the cabin. The kitchen is fully equipped, the hot tub is HUGE, the fire pit was amazing, and we made use of the grill the whole weekend. We also took a short hike to the river where we had a picnic and watched people float by on tubes - it was really lovely. Brenda was super helpful - when we tried to order a movie and we had some troubles, Brenda was available and helped us over the phone - at 9 PM on a Saturday! Thank you! We would love to come back again!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review of your stay at Brown Bear Retreat. Yes, I am very responsive and available because our guests deserve nothing less. Thanks for describing the amenities of the home. You can actually swim or row in the hot tub; it's that large. Our guests benefit from the beautiful view off the back deck of this home and the deck is HUGE also. Hiking in the neighborhood is easy and enough hills to get in a good workout. The scenery is beautiful. The home is located on a peninsula as the river runs around the property. Thanks for staying at Brown Bear Retreat. We hope you can return to enjoy the area. Great Place...Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our sister/brother-in-law get away! Great house! We loved the location. Had canoes and other equipment we did have the chance to use. We liked the layout and the big kitchen. Deck was great and the little personal touches were fantastic. Very clean home. Communicating with the owner was great. A+
