Was not happy with this place
If you rent this place, keep in mind you're paying for the location, which is very nice. However, the cottage is in desperate need of attention. I don't believe it has had a good thorough cleaning in years according to all the cobwebs and spiders and their nests hanging from the ceilings. There is dirt and dust all along the edges of the rooms and on all the blinds and windows. There is dust accumulated and hanging from the ceiling fans. When we first arrived, I saw the deck hadn't been swept in months and there was no broom for me to sweep it and clean the spider webs off the porch furniture. There was a full can of stinky garbage left in the cabinet from previous renters. We had a couple nice days that we could sit on the deck, however, when it started raining, I would have stayed inside and read if there would have been comfortable seating in the living room. We ended our stay two days early because we were so uncomfortable here. As far as the beach and the steps getting down there, be careful! The steps are so old and sunken into the bank that they are an accident waiting to happen. The dock is also in need of repair. This really could be a cute place if the owners would put some effort and money into the maintenance and care. I think they are depending on the renters to do the cleaning which is only fair to clean up after yourself, however, they need to hire a cleaning service to come in at least twice a month to do a good housecleaning. Also, spend some money and get some comfortable chairs in the living room! The kitchen is also in need of some equipment. I wanted to make a pot of soup and all that was available was a three quart pot. I have rented several times from VRBO and I can't say I've always been completely happy with my stays, but this is one that really did not live up to the description. This will be the last time I rent from VRBO because I no longer trust the descriptions or the reviews.
We are sorry that Darla did not enjoy her time at the cottage. We have been renting the cottage since 2013 and have had many repeat renters who love returning to the cottage. Since this review is very critical, we thought we should respond. It is our intent to please our renters and improve their experiences at the cottage.
The dock is a small, wooden platform that we have not advertised for boating or swimming. It was damaged last summer as a result of the St. Lawrence River flooding; we had it repaired only to have it damaged again in a windstorm this year. The steps to the beach are steep; there is a handrail for safety. The deck is large overlooking the River, well maintained and located under oak trees; that means acorns and leaves in late summer and fall, especially when it is windy. Darla arrived just after a heavy rainstorm with much wind. Since the cottage is located in the woods by the water there are spiders; they are harmless, but they do make cobwebs on a daily basis. After each renter leaves, the deck is swept as needed with the broom which is located with other cleaning materials next to the washing machine and dryer. There is also an Electrolux vacuum cleaner. Garbage is routinely removed twice a week; unfortunately it was not removed the morning prior to Darla's arrival. Immediately after she contacted us, it was removed. We don't understand why Darla couldn't find a pot to make soup when there is a whole set of Revere Ware pots and pans in the kitchen.
Again, we are sorry that Darla did not enjoy her time at the cottage. Several rainy days in a row did not help.
Mary and Rick
Great location, Close to town yet quiet and remote Close to Zenda Farm Preserve. Great Cycling on the back country roads. My wife enjoyed the tennis with some women that our landlady introduced her to.
Needs some updating but it is a beautiful location
The boat dock is broken and in need of major repair. Steps down to shingle and rock beach needs some maintenance and is extremely steep. A handrail on the right hand side would be advisable.
We did enjoy our stay though and caught a number of carp. Biggest catch was 22lb 4oz.
It was during a heatwave in the 90s while we were there and relied on the ceiling fans as there is no air-con.
This was our third stay at the River Cottage - just like returning home. Views spectacular, great weather, clean, comfortable accommodations. Pet friendly. Looking forward to returning in 2019.
Secluded spot with beautiful views
We stayed at this property for our 10th wedding anniversary. It was a perfect spot for two people looking for a quiet long weekend. Beautiful views of the river but still in a private cove. Only a few minutes drive to the Village of Clayton. The owner was very nice to deal with.
