Our farmhouse, built in 1900, is situated in a valley on five acres in the Lost River area. We describe its style as "rustic modern," meaning that it retains much of its century-old character, but has been renovated into a loft with a two-story window looking out on the pasture, a barn and the mountains beyond. The first floor has a dining and living area, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, laundry area and a bedroom with a queen-sized bed. The dining area opens to a large deck that looks on to the mountains. There is a fire pit, charcoal grill, and loungers, perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee in the morning, or a glass of wine in the evening while gazing at the amazing stars that are visible on any clear evening. The kitchen opens to a screened-in porch with a table and chairs. The second floor has a living area loft that overlooks the dining room and the two-story window and is furnished with a sofa and television. There is also a second bedroom with a queen-sized bed.

Why Eric chose Mathias
We bought this farmhouse and the five acres it sits on in 2010 to escape the hustle and bustle of our lives in Washington, DC. It's a special place to kick back, open up a good book, a bottle of wine, and find peace.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Close to the Lost River community, with state park for hiking, horseback riding and swimming; a yoga studio; the Lost River General Store, which makes great lunches; the Lost River Trading Post in Wardensville, which was featured in the New York Times; and much more! The community is small but wonderfully progressive, and offers something for everyone -- a great spot for relaxation or social activities.

Relaxing sunny mountain meadow farmhouse
I loved the setting and the house. Everything we needed and more. The views are wonderful and the house is set in a wildflower meadow inhabited by every variety of birds. Lovely place to relax in the mountains and close to Lost River State Park for hiking and recreation. Love to return in fall.
We enjoyed our stay at the farmhouse as a family of four. The setting is beautiful and the house is clean and bright. The evenings were cool and air conditioning was not needed. We explored the nearby Lost River State Park as well as Seneca Rocks and Blackwater Falls State Park. Make sure you download your directions or bring a map, there was no cell signal. Luckily, the house has wi-fi so you can plan your routes from there. Overall, a great stay!
Expected a home base for motorcycle day trips. Torrential rains kept us on the porch for two days. It was heaven! Probably the most peaceful two days I've spent in a decade. Hated to leave.
Perfect Relaxing Getaway
The Cold Comfort Farm is the perfect getaway if you are looking for some R&R. We were in desperate need to get away from work and city life and booked Eric’s cozy farmhouse last minute. He was extremely accommodating, allowed us to check-in early and made sure we had all the materials to access the farm. We brought our pups and groceries because we had no plan on leaving the property the whole weekend - which we never did and there was no need to! The farm sits on the most gorgeous piece of property with beautiful views. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you need; all the windows opened in the home creating a relaxing cross-breeze; beds were comfy; we used the fire pit outside at night and the screened in patio for breakfast and dinner; our pups loved being able to explore. I could go on and on - this place was truly perfect. Already counting down the days till we return in the fall! Thank you Eric for sharing your beautiful farm with us!
lovely get away.
Wonderful peace full place. loved watching the stars.
We stayed in July. It did get a little toasty outside, but between the 2 AC units inside and the breeze we stayed comfortable. We had a great, relaxing time.
