Overview

About the property

A Beautifully Remodeled "Rustic Modern" Farmhouse

Our farmhouse, built in 1900, is situated in a valley on five acres in the Lost River area. We describe its style as "rustic modern," meaning that it retains much of its century-old character, but has been renovated into a loft with a two-story window looking out on the pasture, a barn and the mountains beyond. The first floor has a dining and living area, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, laundry area and a bedroom with a queen-sized bed. The dining area opens to a large deck that looks on to the mountains. There is a fire pit, charcoal grill, and loungers, perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee in the morning, or a glass of wine in the evening while gazing at the amazing stars that are visible on any clear evening. The kitchen opens to a screened-in porch with a table and chairs. The second floor has a living area loft that overlooks the dining room and the two-story window and is furnished with a sofa and television. There is also a second bedroom with a queen-sized bed.

Why Eric chose Lost River

We bought this farmhouse and the five acres it sits on in 2010 to escape the hustle and bustle of our lives in Washington, DC. It's a special place to kick back, open up a good book, a bottle of wine, and find peace.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Close to the Lost River community, with state park for hiking, horseback riding and swimming; a yoga studio; the Lost River General Store, which makes great lunches; the Lost River Trading Post in Wardensville, which was featured in the New York Times; and much more! The community is small but wonderfully progressive, and offers something for everyone -- a great spot for relaxation or social activities.

Great place

  • 4 of 5

Very much enjoyed this place. If you're looking for a place to unwind and maybe go on a hike or two, it's a great spot. Definitely get groceries prior to the trip because there is not much selection in the surrounding area.

The house is comfortable with great light and a nice deck. I just went there to read for the weekend and it was great for that.

Restful getaway

  • 5 of 5

Confirming all the glowing reviews already here. Farmhouse was a quiet and peaceful getaway for the three of us (wife and 9-year-old daughter). Lost River State Park is a jewel. House is quite nice and just as advertised -- it's an old farmhouse with the realities that come with that (iron in the water; flies; a rooster next door who begins his day around 5 am), so you need to be prepared for that. It is not a McMansion in a ski resort -- it is unique. We brought a week's worth of food, stacks of books, Wellies for walking through the tall grass on the hillside, and largely forgot our cellphones. Finally Eric (the owner) was extremely helpful, as was his local caretaker.

A fantastic place to stay in the Mathias/Lost City area

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed here recently for our anniversary. We wanted to find a place out in the country away from the hustle and bustle of the DC area, and we definitely found it. It was only a 2.5 hour drive, so it was very convenient for us. The farmhouse itself is quite nice, very cozy and comfortable. The upstairs loft space is a nice feature, although it didn't use it too much because of the heat (the house has no AC, but with the windows open and ceiling fans going, we were pretty comfortable on the bottom floor, esp. if there was a strong breeze). We spent a great time of time outside and enjoyed the views from the deck, as well as the screened-in patio on the side of the house when the bugs were out. Between the kitchen and grill on the deck, we were able to cook all of our meals and didn't have to eat out. The owners provided us with very detailed check-in information that proved to be a big help and gave us a heads-up in terms of what to expect. It's close to Lost River State Park, which has some nice picnic areas and hiking trails. Lost City is also close by and has a couple of cool stores selling arts and crafts made by local artisans.

Great house in beautiful surroundings!

  • 5 of 5

Eric was VERY responsive during the booking process, and also made sure to check in with us during, and after our stay.

The house is very beautifully renovated in a "rustic farm chic" fashion. Beautiful and charming. The kitchen is very well equipped, and made cooking meals a breeze.

As other people have mentioned, bringing in bottled water is highly recommended, as the water at the house contains iron. But this is no big deal, when you know ahead of time.

The mattresses are very firm which isn't my personal preference, but some people might like it. Everything else was perfect and the house is well stocked with everything, you can think of. We particularly enjoyed the croquet game. Brought me right back to my childhood.

And being able to bring my dog was a wonderful added bonus. She enjoyed exploring the property and lay around on the lawn.

Being just a few miles down the road from Lost River State Park was great! Some good hiking followed by stop by the creek was lovely.

We would definitely consider staying here again. But would bring a mattress topper next time :)
