Our farmhouse, built in 1900, is situated in a valley on five acres in the Lost River area. We describe its style as "rustic modern," meaning that it retains much of its century-old character, but has been renovated into a loft with a two-story window looking out on the pasture, a barn and the mountains beyond. The first floor has a dining and living area, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, laundry area and a bedroom with a queen-sized bed. The dining area opens to a large deck that looks on to the mountains. There is a fire pit, charcoal grill, and loungers, perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee in the morning, or a glass of wine in the evening while gazing at the amazing stars that are visible on any clear evening. The kitchen opens to a screened-in porch with a table and chairs. The second floor has a living area loft that overlooks the dining room and the two-story window and is furnished with a sofa and television. There is also a second bedroom with a queen-sized bed.
We bought this farmhouse and the five acres it sits on in 2010 to escape the hustle and bustle of our lives in Washington, DC. It's a special place to kick back, open up a good book, a bottle of wine, and find peace.
Close to the Lost River community, with state park for hiking, horseback riding and swimming; a yoga studio; the Lost River General Store, which makes great lunches; the Lost River Trading Post in Wardensville, which was featured in the New York Times; and much more! The community is small but wonderfully progressive, and offers something for everyone -- a great spot for relaxation or social activities.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Farmhouse last November. It was so peaceful. The interior was rustic, in keeping with the era of the house, yet there was plenty of luxury. The sitting area upstairs was a perfect place just to lounge, whether watching TV, reading, or just taking a nap! It was quite cold when we were there, but the wood-burning stove kept the whole house nice and toasty. Very well equipped kitchen. Enjoyed cooking our dinners there. There is one other farmhouse up the hill close enough that you need to make sure to close the shades for privacy, but far enough that you never knew they were there. Loved the area. We even drove up to Pennsylvania and back for a nice day trip exploring the region. We will be back!
Cold comfort farm offered a dream getaway for my friends and me! The setting was beautiful, the farmhouse beyond charming, and the surrounding town was full of interesting local treasures! It was the perfect escape from our hectic lives in D.C. and our dogs were thrilled to have plenty of property to explore and run around! We had no issues accessing the property and Eric provided a wonderful packet of information to guide our stay. We would love to return in the warmer weather to take more advantage of the outdoor space! Highly recommend a stay at cold comfort farm!
We loved our stay at the farmhouse. It was the perfect distance from DC for a weekend getaway, the right size for 2 (but would have been great for 4), and nicely equipped for a weekend of cooking and relaxing. I would definitely come back again for another visit to Lost River in the future. Highly recommend!
My boyfriend and I and our small dog really enjoyed our weekend at the farmhouse. Eric was super responsive to all of my questions and getting to the house/getting settled was a breeze with all of the information we were provided. Its a small cozy farmhouse that has an unbeatable view. Our dog loved running around the property and the kitchen had everything we could think of and more. We loved spending our day curled up in the upstairs loft and watching our dog try and stare down the cows that come by (through the fence of course). The only thing is getting used to using the wood burning stove. Its great and totally keeps everything warm! It just takes some getting used to if you're like me and tend to be a central heating kind of girl. Overall I wish we had had more time to stay! We had a great time in this charming area.
We had an amazing weekend at the farmhouse, it was beautifully decorated and homey, and our Golden Retriever loved running around the property. The farmhouse has everything you could possibly need, we enjoyed grilling and sitting around the fire pit making s'mores. We also appreciated all the recommendations from Eric, our favorite was taking the White Oak Trail up to Cranny Crow Overlook, it was absolutely gorgeous. We can't wait to visit again!
We had a great stay, They thought of everything. The temperature dropped 30 degrees (yes from 60 to 30) our second night but the wood stove kept the house warm and the electric blankets top us off for a great night sleep. Only problem was the flies the were dropping dead but there was hundreds of them. Great time!! Thanks
