Our farmhouse, built in 1900, is situated in a valley on five acres in the Lost River area. We describe its style as "rustic modern," meaning that it retains much of its century-old character, but has been renovated into a loft with a two-story window looking out on the pasture, a barn and the mountains beyond. The first floor has a dining and living area, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, laundry area and a bedroom with a queen-sized bed. The dining area opens to a large deck that looks on to the mountains. There is a fire pit, charcoal grill, and loungers, perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee in the morning, or a glass of wine in the evening while gazing at the amazing stars that are visible on any clear evening. The kitchen opens to a screened-in porch with a table and chairs. The second floor has a living area loft that overlooks the dining room and the two-story window and is furnished with a sofa and television. There is also a second bedroom with a queen-sized bed.

Why Eric chose Mathias
We bought this farmhouse and the five acres it sits on in 2010 to escape the hustle and bustle of our lives in Washington, DC. It's a special place to kick back, open up a good book, a bottle of wine, and find peace.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Close to the Lost River community, with state park for hiking, horseback riding and swimming; a yoga studio; the Lost River General Store, which makes great lunches; the Lost River Trading Post in Wardensville, which was featured in the New York Times; and much more! The community is small but wonderfully progressive, and offers something for everyone -- a great spot for relaxation or social activities.

Beautiful home and area - relaxing getaway
The property was a perfect location for a weekend getaway with my husband and our dog! The home was well stocked and very renter-friendly (kitchen supplies, space heaters, lots of blankets, light switches labeled, books, puzzles, etc.) and was a really quiet and relaxing place to getaway for the weekend. Very close to Lost River State Park - full of great hikes! Directions and instructions for check in, etc were provided well in advance and were extremely helpful - would highly recommend this home!
Quiet, remote in a great location
We really enjoyed our long weekend at Eric's place. The house is comfortable and updated while maintaining lots of original detail. It's very near the state park for great hikes and the trout pond for swimming in the other direction. It was so hot while we were there but the ceiling fans and ability to open the whole house helped a lot. We felt so relaxed and would definitely stay again!
Little peace of Oasis
Our stay was amazing, We really loved the beauty of the old farm house and the serenity of the land. The house was well decorated and full of everything you could need for your stay. We loved the kitchen set up for making meals together, and the patio for relaxing and out door eating. The house with the windows open at night in the summer is a very cool and relaxing way to fall asleep. Highly recommend this for anyone and will be returning in the future!
Relaxing sunny mountain meadow farmhouse
I loved the setting and the house. Everything we needed and more. The views are wonderful and the house is set in a wildflower meadow inhabited by every variety of birds. Lovely place to relax in the mountains and close to Lost River State Park for hiking and recreation. Love to return in fall.
Expected a home base for motorcycle day trips. Torrential rains kept us on the porch for two days. It was heaven! Probably the most peaceful two days I've spent in a decade. Hated to leave.
We enjoyed our stay at the farmhouse as a family of four. The setting is beautiful and the house is clean and bright. The evenings were cool and air conditioning was not needed. We explored the nearby Lost River State Park as well as Seneca Rocks and Blackwater Falls State Park. Make sure you download your directions or bring a map, there was no cell signal. Luckily, the house has wi-fi so you can plan your routes from there. Overall, a great stay!
