About the property

A Beautifully Remodeled "Rustic Modern" Farmhouse

Our farmhouse, built in 1900, is situated in a valley on five acres in the Lost River area. We describe its style as "rustic modern," meaning that it retains much of its century-old character, but has been renovated into a loft with a two-story window looking out on the pasture, a barn and the mountains beyond. The first floor has a dining and living area, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, laundry area and a bedroom with a queen-sized bed. The dining area opens to a large deck that looks on to the mountains. There is a fire pit, charcoal grill, and loungers, perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee in the morning, or a glass of wine in the evening while gazing at the amazing stars that are visible on any clear evening. The kitchen opens to a screened-in porch with a table and chairs. The second floor has a living area loft that overlooks the dining room and the two-story window and is furnished with a sofa and television. There is also a second bedroom with a queen-sized bed.

Why Eric chose Lost River

We bought this farmhouse and the five acres it sits on in 2010 to escape the hustle and bustle of our lives in Washington, DC. It's a special place to kick back, open up a good book, a bottle of wine, and find peace.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Close to the Lost River community, with state park for hiking, horseback riding and swimming; a yoga studio; the Lost River General Store, which makes great lunches; the Lost River Trading Post in Wardensville, which was featured in the New York Times; and much more! The community is small but wonderfully progressive, and offers something for everyone -- a great spot for relaxation or social activities.

Quiet Cozy New Years Weekend

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I and our small dog really enjoyed our weekend at the farmhouse. Eric was super responsive to all of my questions and getting to the house/getting settled was a breeze with all of the information we were provided. Its a small cozy farmhouse that has an unbeatable view. Our dog loved running around the property and the kitchen had everything we could think of and more. We loved spending our day curled up in the upstairs loft and watching our dog try and stare down the cows that come by (through the fence of course). The only thing is getting used to using the wood burning stove. Its great and totally keeps everything warm! It just takes some getting used to if you're like me and tend to be a central heating kind of girl. Overall I wish we had had more time to stay! We had a great time in this charming area.

The Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing weekend at the farmhouse, it was beautifully decorated and homey, and our Golden Retriever loved running around the property. The farmhouse has everything you could possibly need, we enjoyed grilling and sitting around the fire pit making s'mores. We also appreciated all the recommendations from Eric, our favorite was taking the White Oak Trail up to Cranny Crow Overlook, it was absolutely gorgeous. We can't wait to visit again!

Very comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay, They thought of everything. The temperature dropped 30 degrees (yes from 60 to 30) our second night but the wood stove kept the house warm and the electric blankets top us off for a great night sleep. Only problem was the flies the were dropping dead but there was hundreds of them. Great time!! Thanks

Rustic, tranquil, and absolutely charming

  • 5 of 5

We spent a long weekend at farmhouse during October and fell in love with the beautiful views and being in countryside. The house was beautifully decorated, fully equipped with everything we needed, and is just a short drive from Lost River State park. We were looking for a location to transport us away from city living, and this was perfect. Some things for the city slickers to keep in mind though: when it gets cold you'll want to use wood burning fireplace (no central heat) which means a little bit of work to keep fire going, no cell phone service at house (though wifi worked great); the electricity went out one night for a few hours while we were there prob due to weather (but keep in mind this is an old farm house so you will be subject to old farm house infrastructure), and the water tastes like iron (though safe to drink) so bring your own water if you don't like that taste. Overall, we had a wonderful time and look forward to returning! Absolutely recommend!

A Charming Getaway

  • 4 of 5

Driving down to the house is a thrill in itself, the dreamy landscape welcomes you at all times of the day. It was the perfect spot for me to focus on my photography skills and shut my brain off slightly more than I'm capable of in the city. The house was clean and definitely had a 'You Are Home' vibe which we adored. The big windows in the dining room filled me with joy each morning as I woke up to get some tea and make breakfast while dancing to music.

Since this is a restored farmhouse and we're from D.C. we had a bit of a learning curve which is expected. We had to turn/run the water system back on, the wood burning stove took us awhile to master bc the wood wasn't catching so we were constantly relighting it (however the house also has space heaters that handle the job just fine), the houseflies definitely found their way in but luckily were only really prevalent during the hottest part of the day (2-5 pm). And when we ran a bath, for some reason the stopper wasn't keeping the water in so we had to leave the spigot running and then it turned cold fairly quickly but if you take a shower you'll be perfectly fine.

Lost River is a bit further from the house than we expected so we didnt venture out too much except for getting lost in George Washington National Forest literally...once we found a town with service we realized we were almost 2 hours away from the house! (traveler tip - there is no service in the town so make sure you have your gps ready to go before leaving the wifi in the house). If you dont mind venturing out for food (30 mins) I would recommend it - I brought enough food to cook most meals but unfortunately we also spent a lot of our weekend vacay washing dishes and cleaning up. This has no poor reflection on Eric's place (it was a lovely stay) but more my lack of country living haha. We did past Lost River on the way back (Monday) but most of the places were closed or possibly out for lunch.

We enjoyed seeing the cows grazing during the day and the roosters saying hello in the morning. It was quaint, wonderful and secluded. I would strongly consider renting this farmhouse out again with maybe a few extra days to fully take in the area and relax. Thank you Eric for creating such a gem :)

Big sky country!

  • 4 of 5

Loving the Lost River area, we have rented vacation homes for several years, often choosing mountaintop locations for the views. We opted this year for the wonderful farmhouse. The extraordinary gift of this location was the "reverse view" - the breathtaking perspective of the sky. We watched dramatic clouds, weather fronts, storms and stars. We deeply appreciated this, and will definitely stay again.

The location of this vacation home also proved convenient, as we enjoy biking, hiking and swimming. It is very close to Lost River State Park, providing easy access to the deliciously cool swimming pool. My husband enjoyed bike-riding on the Cove Roads loop, while I hiked numerous trails in the George Washington National Forest.

The house itself is designed in a way that we felt we were outdoors even when we weren't. The large window that was added when the house was renovated, and the upstairs "living room" both bring the skies indoors. The place is bright and cheerful.

As noted in the descriptions, this is a renovated old farmhouse in the country. When we arrived, there were houseflies, but we dispatched them with fly swatters, and after that we weren't bothered. Also, as noted in the descriptions, the water is mineral-y. Anyone who has stayed in the Lost River area knows this is true at just about all the rental homes. As with other places we have stayed, we brought enough clothes so we didn't need to do laundry, and we also brought in several gallons of drinking water.

The house was clean, nicely furnished with very, very comfortable beds and couches, plenty of books, and a welcoming farmhouse table for computers, dining, puzzles and games.

I want to emphasize that this is not a cookie-cutter vacation home. It is a lovingly and innovatively renovated old farmhouse with lots of character.

We will return for all of these things, but especially the sky.
