About the property

Cabin property is on a point with amazing lake and bluff views on all sides

Beautiful Log Cabin on Lake McFarland. The cabin is located at the end of the Arrowhead Trail on McFarland Lake. 17 miles from the town Hovland that is located on the North Shore of Lake Superior, 18 miles North/East of Grand Marais. Arrowhead trail is paved the first 4 miles then a well maintained gravel road to the cabin.

* Property is a point with incredible views of the lake on all sides

* 2 large bedrooms with views of lake and one smaller back bed room with a double bed and Bunk bed

* 1 bathroom with walk in tile shower

* Fully furnished cabin

* New Honda Generator (Very Quiet) runs all the electric power for cabin

* Satellite WiFi (No streaming of movies)

* Private Point with water views all around cabin

* Adjacent caretaker for check in and out plus if you have any questions during the stay about the cabin or area or if you want to rent the two canoes. The caretakers are my retired parents and they have a fifth wheel camper during the summer months located on the back property before you drive out to the point where the cabin is located. (The point is completely private, only water on all three sides of the cabin)

* Newer LTE Cell phones (Apple 5s, 5c 6 Samsung 4, 5, 6) work in the cabin with the booster antenna. Apple iMessage and Skype work best over cabin WiFi otherwise, you will need to add Canada international rates for Verizon or AT&T cell phones before you arrive.

Cell phones work in Grand Marais and a few miles before Hovland or Grand Portage has an AT&T cell tower but Verizon won't work. If you don't add an international plan make sure you turn your phone off or airplane mode to avoid data charges. Phones in airplane mode can receive Apple iMessages, Skype and Email over cabin WIFI.

* Built in 2012

* Life Jackets not provided

* Large dock for easy boat access and swimming

* Boat ramp located 1/2 mile from cabin

Exceeded our expectations

  • 5 of 5

This is such a beautiful and relaxing place. The pictures do not even do it justice. This was probably one of the best trips I have had. The cabin is charming, the lake is beautiful. Gary and Shirley were great! They know the area very well and told us places where we could hike, and were available when we had questions. We rented a canoe and there is a kayak available for use and we paddled every day. We caught so much walleye that we ate walleye for dinner every night. There is a great fire pit area by the dock and we spent every evening there. Usually we are ready to go home after a week of vacation, but we could have spent a month here. We cannot wait to go back!

beautiful northern cabin

  • 4 of 5

This was a great cabin with a lot of amenities not usually found in the area. Everything was to our liking other than the noisy neighbors. They broke into our feeling of solitude well into the early morning hours. Plenty of space and a great dock for kids to jump off of. Grandkids spent every possible moment in the water! Nice to have the gas grill and yet able to reheat when need be in the microwave. Overall a great 4 days in North Woods.

Boundary Waters Adventure

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is on McFarland lake on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness. Step out of the cabin and the BWCA is a short paddle or hike away. The comfort of the cabin is a warm welcome after a day of fishing or exploring. The owners, Gary and Shirley, are delightful to talk to and have a wealth of knowledge of the area that they are eager to share. The cabin is spacious, in excellent condition and well equipped. Our stay was most enjoyable and our rating is five plus stars!

Beautiful cabin with an amazing view

  • 5 of 5

My family of 6 had a wonderful stay. My teenage boys loved the upstairs area of the cabin. There’s tons to do without having to drive anywhere. You can hike groomed trails, paddle into the BWCA, or fish and swim in the crystal clear lake. The lake had 15 feet clarity which made for some awesome snorkeling. We’d love to come again. Gary and Shirley were wonderful hosts.

A very nice property on a great location!

  • 5 of 5

The kids enjoyed swimming (early July) in the warm, clear and shallow water along side the dock. Beds were comfy. The generator was far enough from the cabin not to be noisy. We rented the 2 canoes from Gary and brought one of our own. Easy paddle to John Lake in the Boundary Waters for a day trip and picnic. The generally slow fishing was more than offset by a large Northern Pike off the dock on the last evening. Gorgeous star-filled night view from the end of the dock. The lovely and haunting calls of the loons welcomed us in the morning and bid us good night.

Our Honeymoon on McFarland Lake

  • 5 of 5

My new wife and I had a wonderful, relaxing time at this wonderful cabin. The hosts are absolutely top notch. Gary gave us a great walk through of the property upon arrival and gave us some fantastic history on the building and the lake. We took advantage of renting their canoe and entered two different BWCA entry points and found open campsites for day trips and picnics. If you are looking for a "choose your own adventure" Northwoods stay, then look no further. This place is a gem. We will be back!
