About Phil Chavanne

My family purchased Selah Springs Ranch in 1995 and I have been in love with it ever since. Other than writing fiction this place is my only true hobby. We have spent the last 20 years improving the property with cabins and new facilities, as well as extensive conservation efforts, restoring native grasses and habitat, removing hundreds of invasive tree species and replanting hundreds more native oaks across the ranch. My father passed away in 2010 and left my wife and I with the task of turning the ranch into a family business. Our love for the land and for people encouraged the direction the ranch has taken. My wife and I simply love hosting families and providing them with an atmosphere of genuine hospitality. We want everyone to love our Texas playground as much as we do.

Phil Chavanne purchased this estate in 1995

A really nice time

  • 4 of 5

If you like the country then this is a neat place. Our family had a reunion here and everything was set up as advertised and we certainly had everything we needed. I didn't like that the fishing was only catch and release but oh well. The river was still beautiful.

First Class Corporate Retreat destination

  • 5 of 5

For years I've sought to lead my employees in a vision-casting retreat every spring, a time where we can map out our year and develop a plan going forward. In the past we had simply traveled out of town, stayed in a hotel, and used the conference room to facilitate our corporate meetings. This year my assistant convinced me to hold our annual retreat at a ranch in the Texas Hill Country. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It was similar to a hotel in that everything was convenient but that's where the similarities stopped. We spent three days at the ranch and the entire time it as if our creativity and focus were in overdrive. There was not a single interruption in 3 days - we had 1000 acres to ourselves. Our staff got up in the morning, hiked and fished, while some read on the porch, and two went to the lookout and watched the sunrise. Our breakfasts and lunches were catered and delivered and were wonderful. Our dinners were cooked by us and that was a great addition to our team-building exercise. Each night we sat around the outdoor fire pit and watched the stars. By the end of our stay we felt like a family. Twice on our horseback ride members of my staff stated that they had never felt so relaxed as they had during that trip. There is simply no way that this experience could have been created in a city. The skyline is wild and natural, the stars are bright every night. The best I've ever seen. If you are looking for a 5 star location where you can get back to basics and recharge your corporate creativity - this is the place.

They rolled out the red carpet for our huge family!

  • 5 of 5

Everyone can see how splendid this place is just by the pictures. That's why we came and there's no debating the natural beauty. But here's what you can't see: when three of my children jumped up and down on their bed at 11pm one of the mattress supports was broken. Completely their fault. I was upset with the kids so we texted the manager to apologize. And within 7 minutes of the text (I paid attention to the clock) the ranch handyman showed up with a new bed support freshly cut in his workshop. He installed it immediately and the kids went straight to sleep. As far as I was concerned if my kids were going to break the bed they could sleep on the floor. During our stay the staff took time to teach one of my children how to saddle a horse and another how to play chess. On the hayride they taught us about the native american and natural history of the land, took us on a cave tour, talked about water conservation. They brought us fresh vegetables from their garden. I was immersed in Texas. We've been to some beautiful places - but never have we been greeted with such warm, authentic hospitality.

Texas was all I'd hoped for

  • 5 of 5

I came to a wedding on this ranch for my brother. I live in Chamonille, France and I was not prepared for the beauty and the hospitality of the people there. The wedding was perfect. Not a single problem. I will never forget my time there.

Probably the prettiest place in the Texas Hill Country

  • 5 of 5

I still can't believe this place exists. I've lived and worked and camped all across the hill country all my life and there is no other place like this one. The owners have spent 19 years grooming this property. On the mile of private river frontage there is zero cactus, no loose rock. Just giant elms and sycamore trees and smooth grass. The place looks like a park. You can play football along the river. There are hiking trails, off road trails, caves to explore, natural springs bubbling up out of the ground, campsites, lookouts, canyons, scavenger hunting maps, tree maps, shooting ranges. There is a magnificent lodge on the river. The San Saba river no less. In all the Texas Hill Country there is no prettier river than the San Saba. It's crystal clear. Everything was first rate - everything we needed was provided to us. You are 10 minutes from town but 1000 miles from stress. What an unbelievable property.

Owner's Response: That was an amazing review. We are honored you think so - but truthfully there are many wonderful places in the Texas Hill Country. It is nice to know all of that rock-picking paid off. Thanks again!
