The beautiful old villages in this part of Liguria are largely undiscovered, even though they are little more than an hour from Nice airport. Only 20 minutes from a lovely port and a sandy beach, the house is C17, cool and airy in the summer with its own entrance bridge, garden and terrace. This area is a paradise for lovers of scenery, blue sea, good food and most of all, peace and quiet. If you haven't discovered this part of the Riviera dei Fiori, it's time to find out what it's really like.

Why Lorne Barling chose Imperia

This is an area which many people call an undiscovered paradise, and the house in in a quiet and secluded location. There are only a few houses in the small village, no shops or cafes, and the garden is in the olive groves, unspoilt and private. The terrain rises quite sharply from the cost, all the way to the Alpes Maritime in France, and of course there is skiing in winter, on both sides of the border. The Italian villages were based largely on the olive industry, still very important, and thousands of terraces were built in C15 and C16 on which the trees were planted.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The views, the countryside, the stone built houses and the peaceful environment are unique. But nearby are lovely seaside towns and beaches, Porto Maurizio dating from Roman times. The countryside is sparsely populated, more so as you move inland, and the natural environment is carefully protected and appreciated by local people.

  • THE BATHROOM The hot water from the boiler in the bathroom is sufficient for two or three showers, depending on how economical you are. If it runs cold it will take about half an hour to re-heat the water to shower temperature. Please take care not to flood the floor, as it creates calcium marks, and use the mop if it happens. Also, please hang up the wooden mat if it gets very wet and allow it to dry. If the boiler should start to drip (sometimes caused by excessive water pressure) please use the red tap to stop it. In the bathroom cabinet you will find some basic medical supplies, such as Band Aid, disinfectant and other useful items such as mosquito repellant and sting treatments. Other bathroom toiletry items are there as well. Please use these sparingly, as they are in case you don't have the items yourself, and replace them if possible.

  • THE BEDROOM The bedroom has an antique Italian bed, which has been reconstructed with a modern, comfortable mattress. Sheets, duvets and bedding are stored in plastic containers in the bedroom under the bed, in the cupboard or in the bedside tables. Please use the containers for storage during your stay (they fit easily under the bed) There is an IKEA sofa-bed in the living room, which pulls out and the instruction manual is there for your use. Make sure that the mattress is properly in place to ensure a comfortable night.

Wir haben unseren Aufenthalt in diesem schönen Steinhaus sehr ist perfekt um mal runter zu kommen. Der empathisch freundliche Nachbar Franceso,ist immer erreichbar und da,wenn man ihn braucht und hat Ausflugsziele parat oder weißt auf den tollen Duft der Rosen hin. Etwas abgelegen, so wie ich es mag. Tagestpuren auch nach Frankreich sind kein Problem. Gerne wieder.

Super Platz zum Erholen

Super gemütliche Wohnung in bemerkenswert stiller Umgebung. Als wir den etwas weiten Fußweg vom Parkplatz bis zum Häuschen hinter uns gebracht haben waren wir entzückt von unserem gemütlichen Domizil. Tolle Umgebung, netter Verwalter, sauberer Pool und die beste Matraze die wir je in einem Italienurlaub erlebt haben.

Danke Lorne für die Zeit die wir in deinem netten Häuschen verbrigen durften...

Wir kommen gerne wieder.

Restaurants in the Dolcedo area are the best for an evening out, as they're not too far, but if you're down at the coast and want to stay down there for a drink and a meal, there is of course a much wider choice.

After a short walk up at hill at Dolcedo you'll find Casa della Rocca and Da Lalla, both of which have good ratings if the look them up, the former rather better. In the town there you can get a good pizza at La Fontanella or La Macine or at Tunù a simple meal on their terrace by the river. A little further - drive over the river and turn left - a really good restaurant is Val Prino at Molini which is not too expensive and serves traditional Italian food. It's about two kms up the hill, following the river and you'll need to book (0039 0183 282230)


There are some excellent beaches, fishing ports, yacht marinas and seaside restaurants, all within about 35 minutes of the house. The closest is Porto Maurizio, a coastal town of Roman origins, which has a very good sandy beach, an attractive port and in particular, two cafes worth a visit. On the port by the big yachts is Capo Horn, near the beach, and Il Moletto Beach Bar is out on the mole, with its own tiny beach and wonderful views. A good place to have a swim and a light lunch, but there are other beach cafes which are immediately on the main beach.

The most exclusive restaurant on the port is the Lanterna Blu, frequented by the yacht owners and very good indeed, at a price. However, a more economical option is La Ruota at Prino, half a km along the coast and by the sea as well, which has excellent fish. In the vicinity of La Ruota there are other good restaurants. There's an attractive sea walk along to this area – ask the way!

In the Via Cascione, up in the town, there is the the bar Pepito, a typical Italian bar where you can a drink, coffee, eat good bar food or whatever you want. The street itself is full of good shops, but currently the lovely old vegetable market is being renovated and the stalls have moved to a tent around the corner! While there, you can also take a visit up the hill to Parasio, the old part of the town with fabulous views.

If you've done the vegetable shopping - always a treat because it's so fresh and inexpensive - you may be heading back towards Dolcedo and home. On the way you'll find the BIG supermarket called Conad. It's pretty good, and you can get just about everything there. There's also a mobile phone shop and hardware supermarket on the site. Go past the market tent to get out of town and you'll find it on the way.


There is a selection of maps and guides as well as an Italian/English dictionary in the book shelf. Please feel free to use them but do please leave them behind for future guests.
