in the 1700"s Old Toll Cottage, once collected Tolls for the hill road to Newton Stewart. Now renovated and standing in its own grounds this lovely top quality cottage is available for holiday lets. With a large private garden (with Garden Room) which runs down to the river Girvan and looks up the valley to the hills. We now have a new Kitchen and have extended the dining area. Have stayed here before. It was always an enjoyable experience but the enhancements since our last stay are imaginative and well done. Excellent place to relax - clean and comfortable.
The cottage is an absolute delight and beautifully appointed. Everything was perfect and it is so tastefully decorated. We loved our week long stay. The surrounding area is wonderful to explore and there is plenty of good information in the cottage for walking and touring.
Stayed over during Hogmanay and New Year's Day for somewhere quiet and peaceful.(Particularly relevant if you have a nervous dog like I do who is fearful of fireworks).Lovely location.
A wonderful, fully modernized cottage in spectacular Scottish countryside expertly overseen by its owners Campbell and Nancy: it couldn't have been better, Many thanks!
The house was clean, comfortable and pleasant, the area lovely and it was easy to travel to a number of places of interest. The communication was prompt when we made contact. Good food options limited but can be found within a reasonable distance if you are not a big fan of cooking while on holiday.
We had a lovely time in the cottage. It was only a few days because we were on a tour, but we didn't miss anything. It is nicely furnished and everything you need was there. The garden is completely fenced in, so it's absolutely great for dogs.
The pretty garden is across the street where you can sit when the weather is good.
We have just had the best 10 days I can remember. We were lucky with weather which made it all the better. The cottage is lovely, the garden over the road is stunning and the area is great. The Black Bull pub is great for a laugh and food and so much to do around. The hosts were honest, straightforward and kind. Cannot recommend it enough. This is one place we will be returning to.
The property looks small from the outside, however, it’s surprisingly spacious inside. A very comfortable bed, with all the kit you could need in the kitchen once the hidden drawer is located. The summer house and garden on the other side of the very quiet road are a delight, we loved coming back and sitting out with a glass or two. Would highly recommend……….

Fantastic property in a beautiful area
Amazing cottage with everything you could possibly need. One of the nicest we have ever stayed in. When they say fully equipped they really mean it! Unlike some places they have not sacrificed quality for profit, comfortable seating, well stocked kitchen, lovely beds and good quality sheets and towels. Beautiful summer house.
The only down side we could find was the low water pressure in the shower but this is totally outside Owners control.
I would unreservedly recommend this property to anyone who needs a relaxing stay in the countryside.
Whilst you are in Straiton call in at the local community shop and take a small drive to Kirkmichael Arms for a lovely meal.
Absolutely loved the cottage and everything it had to offer especially sitting outside the summerhouse overlooking the river waiting on the dinner cooking on the barbecue. Located in beautiful countryside with very friendly people in the village. Couldn't have asked for more really for a short break away with lots of peace and quiet. Would highly recommend. One thing I would liked to have seen was a table and chairs outside the cottage if you wanted a quick sit down with a cup of tea rather than cross the road and go to the summerhouse. There was no where to sit immediately outside the house. Had a super relaxing time.
Everything was brilliant. The cottage was very welcoming, it felt really cosy and has everything you would ever need. There is so much to do and we were out and about every day, so did not have a chance to relax in the lovely summer house, perhaps next time. There are lots of walking trails on the doorstep and beaches and harbours not far away. A walk up the Straiton Monument most evenings set us up for tea. It is one holiday where we probably came home fitter than we went. I think if you were looking for a less active holiday, this would be ideal too. It is in a peaceful location and you could watch the world go by as you sit by the river bank. Missing it already.

Beautiful cottage
We had a short stay here of four nights, we needed a short break due to work commitments and the owners were very accommodating by letting us stay from Thursday to Monday.
The cottage is extremely well presented and feels more like a home than a rental property, it has a very personal feel like the owners spent considerable time and thought into making it a cozy and welcoming space. It's a very clean and uncluttered bungalow, tastefully decorated, in fact the photos on here really don't do it justice. I love the kitchen/diner with its many windows giving views of the stream that runs alongside the property over to the hills and beyond.
The cottage is in a delightful unspoilt location on the edge of the village of Straition, right at the heart of Ayrshire, a short distance from the gorgeous Galloway Forrest and it's lochs and hills. Whilst it feels a million miles from the rat run, it only takes an hour to the centre of Glasgow and Ayr is only 30 minutes away.
The separate garden with the summer house across the road is an added bonus, it gives access to the river and we used it to watch the recent eclipse, I can imagine its fantastic on a summers eve listening to the sounds of the river and watching the stars come out (the property is on the edge of one of the few dark parks, and gives one uninterrupted views of the night sky with very little light pollution).
We hope to return here in the future as it just wasn't long enough to even scratch the surface and old toll cottage is the perfect base to start your Scottish adventure from.

The cottage is excellent and very well equipped and maintained in a beautiful, quiet location. There is a garden room in a secluded garden next to a stream. It is perfect on a warm, sunny day!
everything you needed to make your stay comfortable ,if in the area would stay there again , everything had been thought through, private garden was vey peaceful

About the host

Why they chose this property
A perfect retreat from a busy life. We bought this lovely cottage mainly because of the beautiful surrounding countryside and great walks, but best of all the large garden area and garden room beside the river. We have spent many happy hours there. It really is the quintessential country cottage.
What makes this property unique
There is a large private garden which now has a garden room and deck. Perfect for Barbeques or when the weather is not so hot just sitting in the garden room and enjoying the peace and quiet. Reading or watching the birds. You might see a kingfisher flying up the river.
