L’Ancienne Poste is a luxury village rental property in the heart of Ménerbes, a peaceful village in the beautiful Luberon region of Provence. See us featured on a French architecture TV show on youtube (search on Ancienne Poste Menerbes).
Featured in Homes & Gardens UK, various other design magazines and on a French architecture TV programme (search for Ancienne Poste Menerbes on YouTube), the property was designed by the owner and one of France's leading contemporary architects. The house is a former post office. It has now been elegantly restored and stylishly furnished, yet still partakes of this protected building’s original historic charm.
At 5,000 square feet, the house offers generous courtyard, a rooftop terrace, access to a swimming pool and incredible views of the Luberon Valley from every bedroom and bathroom. Its spacious interior has been tastefully refashioned in a sophisticated, contemporary style that enhances the original architecture. Best of all, the design allows Provence’s magical light, the inspiration of so many painters, to bathe the interior of the house.
For those wishing to explore Provence beyond the village, L’Ancienne Poste is an ideal home base. Setting out on foot, on one an excellent rental bike or by car, you can immerse yourself in Provence, from lavender fields and limestone cliffs to medieval villages and crumbling Roman ruins, from antiques markets and wine estates to chic contemporary shops and stylish restaurants.
L’Ancienne Poste has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate up to 10 people. There is an option to add an adjacent property for an additional 2 people. A typical group might consist of a number of close friends who want to share a Provençal home base, or a mix of couples and children, young visitors are more than welcome. Alternatively, L’Ancienne Poste would be ideal for one gregarious couple wishing to host various guests at an 'open house in Provence' for a couple of weeks or longer.

The Ancienne Poste was the biggest impulse buy I've made so far. My parents had a home just outside Menerbes and one day I found myself walking through the village in a rather romantic state of mind. As I walked up to towards the top of the village I noticed this old ruined post office and a tiny for sale sign. I was instantly charmed by it's perfectly 3 by 3 rows of deep red shutters, the views, the ruined state of the house, the fact that the village was not overun by tourists and the bar's ancient squat toilet.
Space, tranquility and a sense of calm when I return from a boozy long Provencal lunch, walking in the countryside or visiting discovering new corners of this corner of France
For an early in the season visit we had a great time.
The house was very nicely prepared and we were welcomed like Royalty.
Marie is a great host and the house was perfect for our needs. We were a demanding bunch with high standards and the Ancienne Poste was perfect in every regard.
We're here now!
Hi Felipe. I just wanted to say how much we love your home 5 days into our stay.
The addition of your adjoining La Petite Maison was a really great idea for my parents to have them nearby but not too close. They love the outdoor troglodytic shower (who knew!) and have no problems with the steps up to the bedroom.
The older boys are the rulers of the top floor rooms and TV area and our friends and us are on the first floor as per your suggestion with the little ones.
Your menu of activities and the different things you and Corinne suggested have all been perfect so far. We loved the market in St Remy and tomorrow we hope to do the Foret des Cedres walk with lunch in Bonnieux. Joel Durand the chocolatier was great and ships as well!
I was initially a little concerned at the lack of pool but your solution has worked out great for us. Once we explained we were staying at your house the hotel staff have been really helpful. I'd suggest staying there for lunch or dinner because they have a great chef.
Other than that all is well. Despite your notes we found the Weber bbq to be working perfectly and didn't like the new one as much.
What more can I say? Oh yes, the views are great (as promised) and Matt just loves staying in and enjoying the different (huge) spaces and your beautiful books.
The Redmond's send their best and I'll send you some drawings and paintings the kids have done at the end of our stay.
We were first time renters and loved this place.
A pool wasn't really a high priority for us but we really enjoyed be house's location, big rooms and big views. The house is great for entertaining - which we did a lot of.
The owner was patient, courteous and responsive in his dealings with us - we had quite a few questions - and prepared us very well for our stay. Immediately before our arrival we got in touch with the owner's local person - Corinne - and she was very helpful and welcoming.
Upon arrival the house was pretty much as you'd expect. The odd cobweb in the very high impossible to access places but everywhere else seemed to be clean and tidy and everything functioned as it should.
We hired the house for a multi-generational get together and found it to be perfect for all of us. From the little ones (1 -2 year olds) all the way to the septuagenarians.
As I said we haven't done a lot of renting in France but we had no complaints about this place.
The added touches, like fresh fruit basket and croissants were nice gestures that made our stay even more memorable.
We'll be back soon!
We are Italian family and cleanliness and hygiene are something of a national obsession. This is even more so in my wife's case. We were pleasantly surprised by this French house with British owner Filippo. Of course there was the odd cobweb here and there but we realise there is nothing we can do about that - same at home in Italy.
We received a very nice welcome and Corinne the local house manager showed us around patiently between our poor French and her ok English. She gave us all sorts of nice advice and local recommendations of restaurants, things to do, places to visit.
One evening the fuses went because we see using lots of things at same time and Corinne told us how to reset.
All the rooms were very big and nicely decorate. Unlike many houses we have stayed in it was pleasantly light on decoration and excessive furniture. This allowed us to breathe and make the place our own.
The outdoor spaces were fine for us. When we were there there were some baby birds nesting in the courtyard which was fun for our young children.
Talking of the kids (1.5 and 5) there were lots of games for them and the house was suitable and well prepared for them. I liked the fact that the ground floor was quite spacious for the kids to run around in. Of course it would be nice to have a big garden but we preferred to be in the Centro Storico of such a lovely village.
The top terrace had some pine needles in it when we arrived but it had been windy all day so this was normal.
What more can o say?
We liked this house and hope to return for our next feragosto. .
Grazie Filippo e Corinne.
The house's own website gives a really good flavour of the style of the place. www.ancienneposte.com - the site seems to be in flash so not visible on all devices.
This place has massive rooms, big views and is in the quiet village of Menerbes. Having rented in other quaint Provencal villages before I was worried that the rooms would be pokey and dark but not here. Bathrooms and bedrooms were super-spacious and each bed and bath had a great view of the countryside. This made a really nice change!
Often village houses don't have pools and this place was no exception. What the owners have cleverly done is to work out an arrangement with a nearby hotel to allow their clients to use their pool. Great idea. This way we had concentrated sun and pool time and then took time to go off and explore the rest of the time. The hotel is a pleasant walk away - in fact you can see it from the house.
We loved the place and can wholeheartedly recommend it to families, couples (who like space) and anyone except the disabled as all rooms are at least one floor up.
I was initially a little concerned because the house doesn't have a pool on site but their arrangement hotel nearby is perfect for swim-crazy family. A short walk or a shorter drive got us there and the place was really nice. They had bar services and a great restaurant for lunch. On some days we wanted to stay for dinner and the hotel kindly let us use their facilities to change for supper. The place rarely seemed crowded which suited us perfectly. For years we have rented houses in the countryside but the Ancienne Poste has converted into fans of village life.So much more interesting and connecting ! The kids played in the house or wandered off into the village's quiet lanes to play in safety. Overall we loved the Ancienne Poste and would recommend it to anyone (but don't come too often leave some dates for us next year.)
My wife and I had the good fortune to stay at Ancienne Poste. After arriving in Marseille, we rented a car and drove just over an hour to Menerbes. Corinne, the property manager greeted us at the door and couldn't have been more gracious. The property has a beautiful architectural design mixing the old with the new. The owner has decorated the home with lovely photos and artwork from his own travels. The rooftop terrace offered a magnificent view of the valley and neighboring villages. Menerbes itself is a quaint little jewel dating back centuries. It was a pleasure to walk through the village and purchase fresh bread and pastries from the local bakery. During the week there was an outdoor market where vendors sold fresh meats, dairy products and some of the freshest fruit we have ever eaten! Of a course, the local vineyards offered delicious wines. The entire region is rich in history and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the surrounding area. From fields of lavender to hiking, biking and walking through villages that were centuries old, we were never at a loss as to what to do. Our vacation could not have been better and we returned home with a renewed spirit and lasting memories!
