Cozy Cottage W lake access - Surrounded By National Park

Space 1,075 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom * no large groups please*

We are NOT Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg! We attract travelers and adventurers, not tourists. If that appeals to you keep reading, we have a great secret to share.....

Welcome to our comfortable and quiet home by the lake. Perfect to get away from it all and completely recharge. Cottage in the Sky is centrally located for motorcycle enthusiasts, cyclists, and hikers. People travel from around the world to ride the mountain roads and the famous US129 Dragon, a twisting 11 miles consisting of 318 curves that takes you into NC. Cyclists are drawn to the challenge of the Foothills Parkway and area roads where you can often see teams of colorful riders. Miles upon miles of National Park trails await novice and experienced hikers alike. You can even take a day hike from our front door into Cades Cove (experienced hikers only)! We've even stocked up on maps to help you plan your adventure! (We're also happy to to give advise or answer questions about local trails and other things to do!) Or simply walk to the lake and float, swim, or fish your cares away!

We are remote, gravel roads and no cable tv (we do have local channels and great WiFi), NO pizza delivery! 2,100 ft atop Chilhowee Mountain and along the scenic Foothills Parkway, the city of Maryville is less than 12 miles away. Lake in the Sky gets it's name for it's elevation. Our private little community is surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The home is on a peaceful wooded road and includes a separate (private) lake front lot a short 5 minute walk from the house. Lake In The Sky is a 50+ acre stocked lake, great for fishing, swimming, and kayaking. (No motors allowed!) If you like to get away from the crowds, and the hustle and bustle of every day routines, then this is the place for you! You'll want to bring your groceries with you and take advantage of the well stocked kitchen, the nearest store is a good 20 minuets away!

**This is a quiet established community, we expect all of our guests to respect this atmosphere. No parties, no alcohol at the lake**

We are pet friendly but ALL pets must be pre approved. An additional pet fee will apply - not included in the rate.

No land line! Check your carrier for cell service. US Cellular works best.

About Megan Kessler

We have lived in the area since 1998 - we love these Smoky Mountains! Although we are both originally from different places up north we can't imagine being anywhere else! This truly is God's country! Our family has always booked our beach vacations through VRBO with great experiences every time. When we found this property it was a no brainer! It is our personal "getaway from it all" (even though we're only 15 min away!) and we are pleased to share it with you. The home has been lovingly put together to be comfortable and relaxing. We know you will enjoy it as much as we do!

Why Megan Kessler chose Tallassee

We know our home is not for everyone. If you like crowds, traffic, outlet malls, and cheap gift shops, this isn't the place for you! We don't want to mislead you - you are really away from it all - that means no pizza delivery or fast food. Bring your groceries with you, the kitchen is well stocked and you won't want to leave. This is the way our family does vacations and we know others do too.

What makes this cottage unique

During your stay at Cottage in the Sky you will have all the comforts of home while enjoying the peace ans quiet of the REAL Smoky Mountains. You're close enough to take in all the tourist destinations (I refer to them as tourist traps) but far enough away to unwind and relax.

The Great Escape

  • 5 of 5

I know where you are right now, sitting at a computer clicking on cabin after cabin looking for the perfect place for your vacation. I was there. I must've looked at five hundred different places. But something about this one, the "Cottage in the Sky", made me pause. A lake? I didn't see many others with a lake. A cottage? All the others were cabins. All good reviews? Too good to be true. Hmm.

Well, we're back in Chicago now and I'm at the computer writing a review like the hundreds I read before clicking on the "Reserve" button. Let me help you click that button. This is a perfect escape for anyone looking to get away from their everyday life. Megan and Gerry leave no stone unturned and have stocked a cottage with all the things needed for a perfect stay. You don't have to move around from trailhead to trailhead to feel like you're in the Smokys, you feel like it when you step out on the porch. It's not near any of the honky tonk of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, so if you're looking to be close to that racket, look elsewhere. The uniqueness of this property is the "Lake in the Sky" -- a small, private lake just a few steps from the cottage. The Kessler's kayaks and paddleboards and fishing rods make it easy to enjoy the water as soon as you arrive. We hit the town a couple times, took in some of the strip and local fare, but we couldn't wait to get back to the cottage and just be. We cooked almost all our meals, grilled out, watched Netflix and some of the dozens of great DVDSs they've made available. We listened to music, roasted marshmallows, wandered around, looked at birds, read, took naps. A perfect 5 days. Just not long enough.

Hit it. Click it. You won't be disappointed.

The cabin was well-stocked, clean and 5 minutes from the lake.

We stayed for 5 days and had a fabulous time! It’s not a busy town like Pigeon Forge, but that’s what we wanted to escape from! There’s many things to do outside—hiking, fishing, Tuckalachee Caverns, Look Point, sunsets, Cade’s Cove National Park and horseback riding!! Megan was very responsive and super helpful. The cabin had fresh linens and towels. We made fabulous memories!!

My family drove up from Ohio for the weekend. It was the perfect get away. The cottage was clean and welcoming. We can't wait to come back in the summer to take advantage of the Lake. Thanks for sharing your home with our family.

Nicely decorated cozy cottage with all the right touches

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this cozy cottage. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. It was even better than we expected! We loved the wood burning fireplace and used it twice on our stay of only two nights! We found everything that we needed including a lot of unexpected touches that showed that the owners are really dedicated to making sure that visitors feel at home and don't lack for anything.

We visited in November, on a rather windy and chilly weekend. We didn't get to enjoy the outdoor fire pit or hammock, but they looked great! We would love to come back again when we can enjoy the lake and make use of the kayaks and stand up paddleboard that are offered for rent at a very reasonable price.

Megan was so great. She was very responsive and answered all our questions quickly.

We also loved that we were able to bring our dogs along for a reasonable extra charge.

There are a couple things to note that weren't negatives for us, but could be for others. It was pretty far out from the larger cities in the area such as Knoxville, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. It wouldn't be a good location if you want to be right outside of one of those places. The other things is that the homes were pretty close to each other. Again, not an issue for us since we visited in the off season, but during the busy season I wouldn't expect a lot of privacy.

Overall, a super location for us. We definitely give it, and the owners, 5 stars!!!

Peaceful getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was such an enjoyable experience for the four of us. It was so peaceful. The mornings were spent drinking coffee on the porch listening to the gentle breeze. We went hiking during the days and at night enjoyed time together playing card games and board games. This is a little piece of heaven in the mountains. We had such a great time. The home was so neat and cozy. Everything we needed was right there. We would all love to go back again.
