About Ian Newsham
Michele and I are both recently (very recently!) retired teachers. We have lived and worked in South Wales and Devon and for the past 25 years in Yorkshire. We have 2 children (both girls) and one grand-daughter plus 3 cats. Not sure which cause the most trouble!
Ian Newsham purchased this Villa in 2008
Why Ian Newsham chose Ierapetra
We originally purchased our villa/townhouse at Grapevines purely as an investment but from the first time we came out to Crete (just to put up curtain poles and hang curtains) we fell in love with it. It's not just that the villa is wonderfully positioned and equipped and that the pool is the best we've ever swum in, but the whole area draws us back time and time again. Makrigialos is a delightful village, the people are so welcoming, the beaches are probably the best on Crete and the food is delicious everywhere you go. What more do you need?
What makes this Villa unique
The villa is equipped to a very high standard and it and the whole site is so well maintained it still looks brand new. This is partly due to our good fortune to have Rosemary and Nico who manage the site on behalf of the owners . They live next door so are always around to check that everything is as it should be. Rosemary, who is English, manages the bookings, ensures the linen is changed and also meets guests on arrival giving them as much information as they can absorb. She knows everyone in the village and all the best places to go, whether you want to do some walking, sight-seeing, swimming or just eating. Nico, who is Greek, manages the grounds and takes a great deal of pride in ensuring the pool is kept spotless. He also owns some very large greenhouses and his tomatoes are awesome!

This villa was just perfect for us. Set, with others, around a lovely pool it is hard to find fault with either the design, the location or the facilities.
The villa itself is in a row of 5 but it feels secluded. It is a great design on three floors built around a sturdy spiral staircase. There are patios or balconies on every floor. It is light and spacious with a double and twin bedroom and two bathrooms - one shower and one bath. The bedrooms are adequate in size with plenty of cupboard space and we found the beds to be really comfortable.
The kitchen was very well equipped with everything from a coffee machine to a smoothie maker! The sitting area is very comfortable with a lovely big corner sofa and a large TV. Plenty of books on the shelf to read! Every thing in the description of the property was exactly as we found it.
Rosemary, who looks after the complex was excellent and was around most mornings and on the end of a phone if you needed anything - great service.
Ian, the owner, was fantastic from the moment we enquired about the booking. He sent us details about car hire and even booked it for us. Then came perfect directions from the airport to the villa. Then came detailed info about the village, things to do and places to eat, the beaches, where to get the best ice creams and waffles and more. Always with the offer to go back to him if we wanted any further info.
The village itself a bustling - even at the end of the season. It is about a 15 minute walk down to the harbour area where you will find lots of Tavernas, many of the on the beach and offer free sunbeds if you eat or drink there. There are also other beaches with in walking distance - our favourite was Green Beach - quieter, with a small number of sunbeds and a very good taverna. There are also places to visit and see - archaeological sites and places of interest nearby.
All of the above made it just a perfect holiday. I can seriously recommend this for a relaxing, trouble free holiday. Thank you!
Excellent holiday spot
Perfect location for us for our Crete break. Looking for a first class Villa and an easy location. We found both.
Immaculate Villa and very well equipped with all you need. 2 mins from all amenities; shops, beach and lovely Tavernas.
Rosemary who supports the guests was superb. Great advice and very responsive.
All in all a perfect holiday and we would highly recommend it.
Thank you for your very positive and informative review. So pleased you had a 'perfect' holiday and we very much appreciate you recommending us. Ian and Michele
Lovely complex and location
We have just come back from a two week holiday in Makrigialos and loved it. The villa is lovely, lots of balconies, spacious and comfortable and very well equipped for self-catering.
The location is lovely, it is at the top of a hill which meant we did quite a lot of walking to the different beaches but this was fine for us and there are Taverna's almost next door so you don't have to go far for lovely food. In fact Gabianos which is right next door was superb.
The beach opposite is lovely but the main beach, towards the harbour end was our preferred beach, lovely and sandy with lots of tavernas to choose from for lunch.
We did quite a lot of exploring, walking the gorge, visiting local towns and beaches and loved the whole area.
Ian was great, communication in the lead up to our holiday was good, the directions from the airport were fantastic and and on arrival Rosemary was very helpful, getting us settled with everything we needed to know quickly.
Thank you for your very positive review. Some of our guests just like to stay very local to the villa but I'm glad you've really enjoyed what the local area has to offer as well. Agree with you regarding the beach down in the village, we spend a lot of time there. Thanks again for booking with us. Ian and Michele
We had a great break at the end of July. The house was lovely - not for people with mobility issues due to spiral stairs - but perfect for us. The pool and surrounding terrace were beautifully clean and there were always sun beds available. Everyone staying there was friendly and polite. The beach and sea were gorgeous - just across the road and through the hotel grounds to get there. The village has lots of restaurants and bars so we tried a different place to eat each evening and weren’t disappointed once.
Nice quiet apt with great pool area
Stayed for 5 days with 2 teenage girls. Apartment is very nice but beds are quite hard as other guests have commented. Good size kitchen and living area and plenty of balconies to sit out on. Real bonus is the shared pool which is very tranquil and right outside your front door. We stayed in early June so not many properties were occupied. Often we had the pool to ourselves or there may be one or two other couples lounging around. Rosemary is very helpful and couple of great beaches within 7-8 min walk. Harbour is about 15 min walk but nice restaurants and a supermarket beside the apt
We were delighted to see your 5 star review and that you enjoyed your stay at Grapevines #14 and the nearby beaches and restaurants. It is always appreciated when guests take the time to leave a review and give us feedback. We have taken on board the comments that you felt the beds were firm …… we can only say that it has proved difficult to suit everyone’s needs and when the mattress was recently replaced, we chose a medium firmness, as previous guests had felt the mattresses were too soft! When we are next at the villa we will do some more research to see if we can find a better compromise.

This was not the ideal venue for long term guests. Had we not had the support of the local Manager we would have left within two weeks to seek alternative accommodation. Uncomfortable beds - complaint made; immersion heater problems; archaic washing machine, no TV ariel, very very bad HIFI; oven not working; no fan extractor; bad front door no rubber sealant; horrible stairs/staircase; drain blockages; mosquitos from the dirty pool water; not a welcoming apartment - only the basics available........disappointing - happy to leave.
This is the first negative review we have had in 10 years of welcoming guests to our villa and we are obviously very disappointed to hear that these guests did not enjoy their long term stay from late December through to March. Clearly a long-term stay poses different problems to both owners and guests as it is not actually ‘home from home,’ but we feel we had done everything possible to make their stay during the winter months an enjoyable one. For example, information was researched and provided regarding specialist dental practitioners (because of an existing condition) local doctors and even motorbike hire.
We recognised that long stay guests might want to watch UK TV and as this is not available on site, we provided them with our HDMI lead to connect a laptop to the tv. This should have enabled them to stream to the tv and whilst the Wi-Fi is not up to UK standards as fibre is not available, we would have expected the bandwidth to be adequate for their needs.
Whilst these guests (in particular the lady) found the comfort level of the bed unsatisfactory, other guests are satisfied (the mattress was recently changed following guest comments that the mattress was not supportive enough!). We did all we could to help, but clearly our bed did not suit this lady’s existing back condition.
The immersion heater did fail and there was a problem with a blocked drain, but these were both resolved very quickly. Whilst the washing machine is 10 years old, it is perfectly adequate for the occasional use that it gets and we have had no previous complaints.
As regards the oven, the site manager was not made aware of a problem and she tested it this week and it is working fine. The switch is broken on the extractor fan and it is proving difficult to find a replacement.
The swimming pool is emptied during the winter months for maintenance and cleaning, so some dirty water will have inevitably collected in the pool as a result of some stormy weather at the time, but would not, in local opinion, have contributed to any mosquito problem. The pool, when filled and functioning during the season is exceptionally clean and maintained to a very high standard. All of our guests rate the pool very highly.
Our description of the property specifically states that there are spiral staircases (and hence not suitable for people with restricted mobility). The seal around the front door seems to be a problem when it is very windy and we will be rectifying this when we go to the villa at the end of May.
Finally, far from having ‘only the basics available’ the villa has air conditioning, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, coffee machine, hand blender, toasted sandwich maker, iron, hair dryer, tv, dvd player and a safe, in addition to all of the other equipment that guests expect to find.
We always try to provide our guests with the information and facilities they need to enjoy their time at Grapevines and the comments in our visitor book and our HomeAway reviews show that we usually achieve this.
The nearest beach (5 minutes walk) which stretches around the bay to Makrigialos harbour is one of the best on the island and has been awarded Blue Flag status. It is sandy and provides safe bathing for swimmers of all ages and abilities as it is sheltered and slopes very gently. The whole stretch of this coast offers beaches with easy access and secluded coves.
Makrigialos is accessed from Heraklion airport, approximately 120km. Car hire is recommended but a taxi service is available and I can arrange these for you. There is a petrol station in Makrigialos.
Makrigialos is a short walk away (10 minutes) but there is a well equipped supermarket and many excellent restaurants within just a few minutes walk. Makrigialos has a good range of small shops, supermarkets cafes and tavernas as well as a bank, doctor, dentist and pharmacy.
Ierapetra is the nearest large town and is a pleasant 30 minute drive along the coast. Sitia is slightly further away (35km) on the north coast but again is a delightful drive.
Makrigialos is located in Lasithiou Province and is ideally situated to explore this area. To the north west is Agios Nikolaos, a very lively and popular resort from where you can visit the island of Spinalonga.
If your interest is in archeology there are many sites of interest, ranging from the ruins of the Minoan town at Gournia and the palace at Zakros to Roman, Venitian and Turkish influences across the region. The monastery at Moni Toplou, although geared to tourism is well worth a visit. There are archaeological museums at Ierapetra and Sitia.
For those who enjoy walking the gorge walks are a must and one of the best known starts at the village of Pefki.
