About The Owner

Thank you for choosing to view our Villa Halcyon in Crete. We are a couple who enjoy travel and live in the North West of the UK. We aim to provide our guests with a beautiful home-from-home villa which is set in an enviable position with unrivalled views. From the moment you make an enquiry with us we encourage you to ask as many questions you feel necessary to ensure our villa meets your requirements for a perfect holiday in Crete. We are honest and trustworthy people who expect high standards for our own holidays and therefore offer nothing less to all our guests. We look forward to hearing from you. Stewart and Hilary.

The Owner purchased this villa in 2009

Why The Owner chose Apokoronos

We spent many days searching the whole of western Crete for the perfect location that would provide us with a magnificent sea view, privacy and yet within a short distance of a sandy beach. We designed the villa, with the help of an architect, to provide a home that we would enjoy for holidays and could even retire to.

What makes this villa unique

Villa Halcyon is perfectly located for peace and quiet yet it is very convenient to all the local amenities. With restaurants and tavernas only 5 minutes away in Plaka and a sandy beach at Almeryda only another 2 minutes drive further, the villa is never far from any activity. When the evening comes there is nothing nicer than to sit and relax around the private pool with a cool drink and watch the sunset over Souda Bay.

Beautiful villa with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

The villa was very well equipped and obviously well managed .We are well travelled and have stayed in many places but none that have 3 bathrooms before ,which I thought was pretty much unheard of in Greece.

We loved the peace and tranquility of the location and the views were stunning ,we never tired of them.

You do need a car to get around. Although we did walk down to the village daily for our morning coffee ,which was hard work but enjoyable. There were many restaurants and kafenions within a short drive ,and we were impressed with most of them, and really loved the atmosphere and authenticity of this area of Crete . We had no idea how beautiful Crete was especially loved Chania.

We were a family of 5 and although it was a bit quiet for our teenaged children they actually enjoyed the ‘detox ‘ from WIFI and their electronics ( although WIFI access in all local bars /restaurants we visited.) The pool was very welcome at the end of a hot afternoon with the superb infinity view .

We had to contact the management only once when I locked myself out of the Villa ,and Richard very promptly saved the day by responding immediately to let me in .

We experienced great communication from the owner Stuart leading up to our rental period and who was very accommodating in permitting us a later checkout on request which we were very grateful for.

We absolutely loved our holiday here ,and had planned to visit Crete for some time - we were not disappointed and will definitely return. Thank you to the owner and management team for a positive experience.

A balanced review to help all parties

  • 2 of 5

Having hired a few villas in the Greek islands over the years, and being a landlord myself I like to think I can offer a balanced view. Hopefully this review will help all parties (the villa management company, the customer, the owner and HomeAway).

The view from the Villa is spectacular. However the Villa does not offer value for money when compared to other villas for the same price. The landlord should consider reducing the price and making improvements to get the Villa up to the standard as advertised.

The Infinity pool (which looks spectacular against the view as the pictures will show) was only an infinity pool for 3 days out of 14 after which it became a slowly draining pool. The excuse used was that the water supply is not constant but I know enough about pools to know that the secondary chamber containing a few thousand litres drained away due to a leak. The management company used the lack of water supply as an excuse but then admitted the pool had a leak. The pools large electrical light which kept popping out of its underwater housing and floating had been broken for some time and not fixed.

The microwave didn't work and upon reporting it, the management company confirmed it had been broken for some time. It was not replaced.

The Villa attached to this one is derelict - I suspect that is where the rats came from when they scampered across the pool area of an evening.

I wouldn't say the Villa is suitable for six persons unless its a family with four children under the age of 16.

There is scant information within the Villa about the surrounding area. The Management companies advertised telephone number is out of use (when you try and ring it) and the emergency number is not answered (lets hope you don't lock yourself out!). Contacting the management company was possible by e-mailing the owner who immediately contacted the management company on our behalf.

The Villa was kept clean by the management company inside and out with cleaners turning up regularly.

We were disappointed given the amount of money we paid. We had two sets of friends who also hired Villas on Crete, during the same time we were there and their Villas were outstanding in every way and similar in price.

Had I have paid half the amount I would have considered this Villa good value for money however I would still remain dissatisfied with a broken microwave, pool and the vermin

Spacious Villa

  • 3 of 5

Spacious Villa for 2-6 people. The kitchen is well equipped. Quiet and windy area. Car necessary. Large swimming pool. Water was only problem: the last 2 days we were without water. We took swimming pool water to toalet every time we used toalet (not wery luxury) and we bought bottled water for washing (a bit difficult to wash like that).

Owner's Response: Unfortunately the local government at Vamos that supplies the water have had a problem with the water supply. They should have laid on water tankers to provide an emergency supply but Greece was apparently having a National holiday from Friday until Wednesday. It is no wonder that such a lovely country is in such a state. Although the villa has a metered mains water supply we have had a 7000 litre tank installed in recent years to alleviate any short term problems that Crete sometimes has with water supply. This reserve tank holds sufficient water for about 3 days use by 6 people. I am sorry to say that the person responsible for ensuring that this tank was full, in view of the fact that a National holiday lasting four days was approaching, failed in their duty. I apologise on their behalf and I will do my utmost to make sure that this does not happen again.

Halcyon days indeed.

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful honeymoon at Villa Halcyon, the photos don't do it justice, believe it or not. The views were stunning; the villa was very comfortable, it had everything you could need; the pool was a good size and very well looked after; it was in a wonderful location, very private but only a short drive to shops and tavernas.

Villa not appropriate for 6 people

  • 1 of 5

Several issues concerning this renting:

1. Several problems occured once we arrived : equipments mentioned in the description are not functioning : microwave and no replacement, TV repaired after one week, door locked obliged to go to the bedroom through another one, asking several time to management team to solve basic problems : water pump, swimming pool etc

in addition the owner keeps the amount of the caution for problems which occured before we arrived ( for instance the door latch)

2 The villa is not appropriate for six persons : the living room and dining room not more than 14sqm not allowing to have space to move; it's the same for the kitchen equipment : just six plates, six glasses, small pans it is ridiculous and table too small, not appropriate for six people having lunch or dinner.

3 no space outside to protect from the sun or the wind and to enjoy the view, just a small space of less than 7sqm to rest , ridiculous!

In addition when you call the owner he doesn't want to listen to the problems and hangs up the phone. not the proverbial english gentleman attitude!!

Owner's Response: Yes this was a particularly awkward French client for whom nothing was right. None of the items of which he complained were reported by the previous guest who left two days before. The satellite cable for the TV was repaired as soon as it was reported. The microwave was not faulty as it is not supposed to get hot inside unless you put something in it. The door problem was caused by allowing the door to slam shut because the door stops were not used and resulted in the lock jamming. The repairs cost me over €100 to put right. There were no issues with the pool pump reported during his stay. All in all he was a guest from hell. I spoke to him on two occasions during his stay but he simply would not listen to reason.

7 minutes drive away from the villa is the blue flagged beach resort of Almyrida. The gentle sloping beach make it very safe for small children. The more active holidaymakers can make use of the windsurfing school, take out a catamaran or snorkel off the rocks. Kalives is a 15 mins drive and larger than its sister Almyrida with 3 main stretches of beach. If you prefer a quiet cove there is one just 5 mins drive from us, secluded, picturesque ideal for diving and snorkeling.

Car hire is essential. The nearest airport is Chania (40 minutes drive). Heraklion airport is approximately 2 hours away. Highly recommend Car Hire Company is Athens Cars - speak to Babis and tell him we sent you.

Local village of Kokkino Chorio: 4 minute drive - George's mini market. Plaka for nearest restaurants, mini market, bakery: 5 minutes drive. Almyrida local blue flag beach and town: 7 minutes drive. Kalives town, beach, restaurants: 15 minutes drive.

Chania town, harbour, shops, cobbled lanes, market, leather stalls, restaurants and excursions: 30 minutes drive.
