About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Anyone can rent you their house, I provide a tropical resort with concierge services. This house has it all – a 7 min walk to Sombrero Beach, heated private pool, ocean views, a 'fisherman's' dock, high speed wireless Internet, etc., etc.

Marathon recently spent $5M renovating Sombrero Beach - it's one of the best beaches in the Keys. Beach chairs, towels, umbrella, cooler, and sand toys are all provided. The 12' X 28' pool is on the west side, so it gets full sunshine for sun bathing in your Speedo (you'll have a lot of privacy in our back yard). In the winter we can heat the pool to 86 degrees. At night the pool light will change colors.

The fisherman's dock has a large fish cutting station, electric, plumbing, sink, lights for when you return in the dark, a hose for your boat and one at the fish cutting station, and rocket launchers on the pilings to place your rods so they don't get stepped on. Use the freezer out back for your bait, ice, and your catch. And what's the worst part about fishing in the summer? Answer: when you catch a load of fish and you have to clean them in the scorching sun when you return. Well, I've taken care of that. I have let the mangroves grow up and over the fish cutting station to block the sun as you clean your catch. There's even a shower to cool you off when you come back (see photo).

We are on the ocean side, so you'll have quick ocean access to some of the best fishing in the world. An underwater dock light comes on at dusk and turns off at dawn - you'll be mesmerized by the fish swimming in circles around the light while you sit on the park bench with a glass of wine. Let the children cast a line and Voila - they caught a fish in the Keys - something they will always remember. Mangrove snapper, tarpon, angel fish, sting rays, and nurse sharks have all been caught off of my dock. I have counted a dozen tarpon lurking in the shadows at night (see photo). The light attracts bait fish and the bait fish attract tarpon - tarpon are a fighting fish - you can't eat them, as they are all muscle - and if you hook one, you had better hang on for the ride - you might hook one, but not many will 'land' one - they will literally come straight out of the water and spit that hook out - by the August timeframe, and being creatures of habit, the tarpon know that they can come over to my house and have a snack - these pics were taken in August one year. Peak time for tarpon is August, September, October, and the begining of Novemeber (before the first big winter chill hits the Keys). Of course rods and reels are provided.

Spectacular sunrises over the Atlantic are available off of the master bedroom balcony. You will sleep like a baby in our beds, as they all have have 600 thread count sheets. All 3 bedrooms have a tropical theme decor.

High speed wirelss Internet, with coverage out to the pool will let you send your pics to everyone before you leave Paradise. Take a picture of Iggy the iguana out sunning himself at the pool (see pic). Family room TV has a 40' plasma TV - and there's a large color TV in master bedroom.

The house sits on an unusually large lot, large enough to fit two houses. It sits way back from the street, ensuring your privacy (see photo). A picnic table and Weber gas grill are on the deck out back. We also provide an extra tank of propane gas, just in case you run out when you're cooking that special dinner.

Our house is fully furnished with everything you’d expect – towels, linens, microwave, toaster, etc…..and yes, there’s a blender. We also go the extra mile and provide the miscellaneous household products such as laundry detergent, dish soaps, paper towels, etc. No need to hassle with these upon your arrival.

To assist in making your stay more enjoyable, we will also provide a list of restaurants, including those off the beaten path that only the locals can find. I highlight those restaurants that we frequent when we are down there.

This house has it all!

About The Owner

Have lived in South Florida since 1996. Raised 4 children, and all have fond memories of our house in Marathon. Their friends have similar memories.

I took my son and a bunch of friends down there for a few days when they graduated from high school. I will never forget the comment my son's friend said the last day there. He looked at me and said 'Mr. Flynn, I have never had so much fun in my life, as I did down here the last few days'.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

Why The Owner chose Marathon Area

The house sits on a double lot and is is close to Sombrero Beach. The extra space is out front (so you are way back from the street) and out back (plenty of room for swimming pool, etc). It is not near the airport (be careful there are some listed that are at the end of the runway).

I completely transformed this property. I installed 100+ tropical plants and bushes. During the Fall when I work on the house, I will put 100+ barrels of branches/cuttings out for trash pick up.

I rebuilt the dock, so it has electric, lights, shower, sink, large cutting station, etc.

Owner's Response: I guess that's one of the best things about my bit of Paradise - everyone will remember it with fondness from children to adults - it's not just the house, it's the pool & privacy, the dock & fishing, the beach, etc. etc.

Family Reunion!

  • 5 of 5

Great place and a terrific owner. Neil was very helpful before our trip - emailing information about local restaurants, bike and boat rentals and things to do in the area. My granddaughters lived in the swimming pool when we weren't down at Sombrero beach. The house is comfortable and big enough for our group of 5 adults and two kids. Very clean and stocked with anything you could need for cooking. The grill and picnic table on the patio meant we ate a lot outside in the evenings and even had breakfast out there a couple of days. We had such a great time, we're already looking at when we can all get together again. I recommend the house and Neil is truly a great guy. Thanks!

Owner's Response: Well I liked this response for a bunch of reasons: 1. I was sitting next to my wife of 30+ years on an airplane that was on the tarmac waiting for takeoff - I handed her my Iphone and said "see honey, I told you I was a great guy" 2. I'm always pleased when my guests have a great time at my "resort"

We had a wonderful time. Neil, the owner called at the beginning of our vacation to make sure everything was in order. I appreciated that, he truly is a concierge. The house and property are exactly as described, which I believe is the highest compliment I can iterate. The owners suggestions for dining and activities were spot on. Thank you Neil.

FAMILY OF 8

This home fit our family perfect! It was clean and well stocked just as described. Actually the sliding glass doors were so clean the kids ran face first in them a couple of times, it was pretty funny. With 2 adults and 6 kids ages ranging from 6 to 14 their was always things to do weather it was swimming in the pool, relaxing in the hot tub, walking to the beach, or fishing off the dock. Our whole family spent hours fishing right off the dock and caught all kinds of fish, including a nurse shark. Every morning we would go and sit on the dock and drink our coffee and watch the Iguanas come out of the trees on the otherside of the canal and then swim over to our side. Probably one of the best things the kids got to experience was almost every day when the tide came in a Manatee would swim down the canal. So we sprayed the hose in the canal a little and the Manatee came right over to the dock put it's head out of the water and we got to pet it. That was pretty amazing. So if you stay at this property and see a Manatee , spray the hose in the water a little and maybe you get a chance to pet a Manatee. We also visited Bahia Honda State Park it has a really nice beach and we did lots of snorkling there. We also visited Key West where we ate at the best restaurant called Hogfish Bar and Grill, the price are reasonable and the portions are well worth your money and excellent food ( Highly recommended!). We also visited The Turtle Hospital very information and the kids loved it. The owner of this property is great he provides you with everything you need to know while visiting. The other great thing about this property is all of the landscaping is wonderful because it makes it so much more private. I highly recommend this property it was well worth it and the owner was super quick with getting our security deposit back. Thank you! again Neil for sharing your home with our family we made lots of good memories on this vacation.

Owner's Response: All of these are unsolicited comments - from an elderly couple of 2 to large families, everyone has a great time at my resort, and they all appreciate the concierge services, the lush tropical plants, the pool and hot tub, the dock, and Iggy the Iguana! Neil PS You can be sure that I will be getting decals for the sliders real soon.

My husband and I recently had the opportunity to stay in this vacation home with our three children for 7 nights. From the moment we walked through the door, our vacation was smooth sailing. Every detail one could imagine was thought of by the owner. Because of everything being so well stocked and clean, all we had to do was unload our luggage and start our adventure. Our children range from age 7-14. This property had something for all ages. The pool area was beautiful and well maintained with many pool toys for kids. Mom and dad enjoyed looking at night sky from the hot tub. (There was the occasional "shooting" star to enhance the experience). We were able to walk to Sombrero Beach within five minutes. The best part is that beach chairs, towels, toys, snorkel gear and umbrella were all provided. Great recommendations for activities, charters and dining were suggested by the owner as well. All of the guess work was taken out. We would recommend this spot to anyone and hope to visit again next year!

Great Home to be Comfy and Relax

  • 5 of 5

We (6 adults) spent a great week in this home. The home is exactly as advertised and probably better. The pool and hot tub are great and sparkling clean, as was the house. All supplies listed were there when we arrived. We ate most of meals in, as the pool area was so relaxing we didn't feel need to go out often and everything we needed for preparation was avail. Went to Key West twice as it was an easy and beautiful drive. Sombrero Beach was really nice, our dock was great, caught a few fish and rented kyakes and a paddle board. We would definitely rent this home again.

Sombrero Beach-better than Bahia Honda-7 min walk

Sombrero Beach features picnic areas complete with grills, brand new shower facilities indoors and outdoors, beach volleyball, a, landscaped grassy nature walk, and a long sandy beach with a roped-in swimming area, suitable for swimming and snorkeling, Our house is stocked with plenty of board games as for those days/nights you fell like chilling at the, house, Of course, a seven minute walk to one of the Keys best beaches is always on the agenda, day or night! Here's a suggestion that's a big hit with my guests - grill your dinner down at the beach one night - there's picnic tables and grills, the kids can play in the playground area - or, if no kids, a bottle of wine at sunset will be perfect!

And if you're new to Marathon, don't worry. I will provide you with a list of things in the area (Turtle hospital, snorkeling, swim with the Dolphins, etc.). I will also provide a list of local restaurants with descriptions, and I highlight the ones my family prefers. Here's some quotes from my restaurant review:

'Without question, this is the best place around for intimacy and service. This is where Dianna and I go for that special dinner (anniversary, or when I’m in the dog house, etc.) – don’t worry about the exterior – entrance is around the back – service is slow – so take your time. Plan on an hour and a half to 2 hours for dinner.'

'This restaurant attracts an interesting mix of people, including snowbirds, vacationers, weekend warriors, honeymooners, anglers, divers, sailors, power boaters, musicians, musician wannabes, people-watchers, bikers, deadbeats, fugitives, witness protection program members, and of course, locals. Come on your yacht, ragtop, powerboat, dingy, kayak, surfboard, bike, pickup, Jeep or car -- and come as you are -- the dress is strictly casual. This place is the closest restaurant/bar to my house by car or boat.'

'It’s not on the water, but the reason you’re going there is to fill up and not eat ‘til dinner. Had the “Pig’s Breakfast” – 2 eggs, toast, potatoes, 2 pancakes, 2 sausage, and 2 strips of bacon – a whopping $9. (and yes, they serve grits). No matter what time you go here for breakfast, you won’t be eating lunch at noon.'

I call my guests the day after they arrive, just to make sure they don't have any unanswered questions or concerns.
