Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Hale Puako has been owned and loved by the same family since 1978. It is not a fancy home, for those used to luxury accommodations, it may be a bit rustic for you, but for many families who return year-after-year, this is their favorite. Savor some time, as they have, on this half acre of paradise, surrounded by a lush, green landscaped yard, numerous coconut palms, and a stunning view of Puako Bay. From the home and lanai you can watch the sailboats moored in the bay, or turtles basking on the lava rocks in front.

The original A-frame home includes a full kitchen, living area and ocean view loft with Twin beds, or they can be converted to a King bed. A second bedroom just off the kitchen and nearby full bath has overhead skylights for moon and star gazing as you rest in the comfortable queen-sized bed. An addition to the home, added more recently, has a oceanfront dining and lounging lanai, plus a master bedroom with a California-king bed and a second cozy oceanfront deck for relaxing with a tall, cool beverage. An upstairs office is available for those who must work while on vacation. Office includes high-speed internet access and a desk.

This unique piece of paradise is one of the original Puako seaside homes located just steps away from snorkeling, kayaking and swimming right in front of the home!

This home is managed on behalf of the owners, by Mary Fox, R(B) 2 Papayas, LLC.Mary holds an active real estate broker's license in the State of Hawaii. GE and TAX number 115-791-4624-01

About The Owner

Aloha, I am Mary Fox, R (B) and owner of 2 Papayas, LLC. I manage this wonderful Puako home on behalf of the Owners. I would love to help you and your family find the perfect home for your stay on the Big Island. I live nearby and therefor am available to greet you upon arrival, answer any questions you may have, or attend to any concerns or requests that may arise during your stay. Until we meet in Paradise....

The Owner purchased this house in 1978

Why The Owner chose Puako

It was love at first sight when we saw the house that became Hale Puako on our first trip to Hawai’i Island in 1965. Then it took us 13 years to check out possibilities on the other Islands, find the cash – and - the courage to buy! Hale Puako has been a joy to us, our family and friends since 1978. We hope you will enjoy our piece of paradise.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had an absolutely marvelous time there at Hale Puako. What wonderful family memories we made swimming at the beach steps from our door, sitting on the glassed-in patio eating dinner together, or talking as the sunset while we sat on those benches facing the Kohala coastline and moored sailboats. The house was obviously designed to take advantage of the location and utilizes both the indoor and outdoor space so well. And what a view to begin and end the day with! Thanks a bunch!

This beachside rustic cutie held up to Hurricane Lane's winds. Perfect location for this great home.

  • 5 of 5

I love this rustic gem. Located behind the Church of Christ, you could not ask for a more private, quiet beachfront home. We snorkeled most days further down Puako, as the harbor was always churned up, but you're 2 minutes away from a 20+ turtle sunset, eagle rays, turtle cleaning stations, white mouthed morays and more. The home itself is very traditional. Not for the high end lovers (or those who must have AC). The a-frame structures kept the winds flowing throughout. There's plenty of room for 6 people to sleep comfortably. The kitchen is basic but functional. The walls have treasures from the sea and lots of books to read. But you're here for the view and your own little beach attached to an even larger one that curves around for the most beautiful sunset view on the island. Mary, the property manager and Robbie from 2 Papayas were wonderful. We were here during Hurricane Lane and they called almost every day to check in on us. Hurricane force winds hit us one night, and this house was steadfast against the 50+ mph winds. But what's amazing about Hawaii is all you have to be is patient and the sun will always come out again. Oh, the view of the stars from the master bed had me up at 3:30 almost every night. Unbelievable!! Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Mahalo, 2A! - ME & Steve

Amazing location!

  • 4 of 5

This property is all about location, location, location. It is ideally situated for Ironman Hawaii 70.3 race participants. We LOVED the views and easy access to the bay. The home itself is rustic but well appointed. It is situated on a pointe, so there is a breeze that generally makes it comfortable with no AC. During our stay, the mouse bloom was a problem we had to deal with daily. If you are ok with a little bit of "island living", then the tradeoff for the location is worth it.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. So glad you enjoyed the location and home. We appreciate your understanding on the mouse bloom. Even though we have monthly pest control there are times of increased activity. We try to nip these instances right away and have our pest technician come out if there are any problems during a guest stay. 'Island living' is a great way to describe this home as you are steps from the ocean in an authentic older Puako home. We would love to have you back if your travels bring you back to the area. with aloha, Marley and the Staff of 2Papaya Vacation Rentals

This house is in great shape and has one of the best views in Puako. Unobstructed beach access and a beautiful front deck that is feet from the water. We love the location and the house and will come back soon.

This house came recommended by a friend and it certainly did not disappoint. Amazing location on the beach, well outfitted with amenities, comfortable and casual (old school), and the service was outstanding. We would highly recommend this house and rental company - we will certainly be back!

A piece of paradise. Fantastic destination for kids.

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Hawai'i and we feel very lucky to have found Hale Puako. We spent two fantastic weeks in this rental. The house was very clean and it had everything we needed to have a restful vacation. The kitchen was well stocked and we found all needed to cook meals. Having a grill on the deck made it easier to cook and enjoy meals outdoors. The closeness to the sea allows for the house to benefit from the ocean breeze, specially the attached master bedroom, and we could sleep well without AC. The location of the rental couldn't be better: right on a small cove with a sandy entry which made it very inviting for the kids (8 and 10) to snorkel and play by their own while parents either joined them or enjoy the sights from the deck. The place is very private and we felt we were the only people around. with the sea on one side and a very spacious green yard around, the house feels very private. The natural beauty of Puako Bay made this an excellent destination in itself: snorkeling in the bay is great and kid friendly, the turtles were frequent swimming partners and some came to have their 'siestas' right on the cove (the back yard of the house, incredible!). We explored different sections of it (the cove to the left of the boat ramp is like an aquarium). Hapuna beach, two miles away, is simply beautiful. If you are into running, you can run there early in the morning, go for a swim and run back to the house. It was heaven. You can explore the entire bay in low tide and have fun checking all the ponds. Sunsets are spectacular. Groceries are near by and you have options to chose from. Management was very professional and responsive to our needs and we were very satisfied with 2Papayas. We highly recommend this rental to other families.
