Buncrana is the largest town in Inishowen with a population in excess of 4,000, a seaside resort long patronised by people from Derry and other places in Northern Ireland. It is sheltered by hills, and together with Fahan, is an excellent centre for golf, water sports and other activities. The long [5km] sandy beach – the so called White Strand - at Lisfannon on the eastern shore of Lough Swilly, is one of the chief attractions of the town. The name Buncrana, Bun Cranncha in Gaelic signifies that this is a settlement at the mouth of the river shaded by trees, a walk along the river bank under the beech, maple and lime trees is a pleasant way to spend time in the town. Buncrana Castle, now in ruins, dates from the late 16th / early 17th centuries, but was rebuilt in the second decade of the 18th century. When Theobald Wolfe Tone was arrested on board a French ship in Lough Swilly in 1798, he was taken as prisoner to Buncrana Castle. The Castle is located by the six-arched bridge over the river. Also on the banks of the river is Swan Park, called after Harry Percival Swan, a prominent local historian. Driving north from Buncrana the road runs past Dunree and up to the Gap of Mamore, one of Ireland’s highest mountain passes, and well worth a visit by those with a head for heights. For more information on popular places to visit on the Wild Atlantic Way , please visit link below . A must for all visitors is a meal at the Firebox Grill, only 1 mile from the property in Fahan . Another very good restaurant close by is the beautiful Red Door Country House in Fahan. A fantastic day out is a visit to Dough Island. Doagh Famine Village is an outdoor museum that tells the story of life in the area from the Famine in the 1840’s, through the 1900’s to the present day. It depicts life in Ireland as it was, non-commercialised, interdenominational interspersed with humorous anecdotes of Iris
