About Tom Crotty
We built this house and lived in it for a number of years until commitments to our 5 children's activities forced us to relocate to the adjoining city of Galway (approx 50 km). We loved living here and intend to move back when our kids are grown.
Tom Crotty purchased this House in 1995
Why Tom Crotty chose County Clare
The setting is unique. It overlooks Galway Bay and access to the beach is through a little wooden gate at the bottom of the garden. The house is built in local stone and is very cosy, with open fireplaces in the sitting room and two of the bedrooms. It is situated in spectacular Burren landscape and is just outside the village of Ballyvaughan, with its lovely pubs and restaurants. .
What makes this House unique
We loved the setting from the word go. People felt we would not get planning permission but we designed a sympathetic low level stone house which is cut into the hillside and blends into the landscape. The peace and tranquility of the location, the comfort of the house, the direct beach access, and the proximity to Ballyvaughan & Galway are the benefits that people will enjoy in our opinion.

‘Céad Míle Fáilte’...
There’s a saying in Gaelic, “Céad Míle Fáilte.” Its literal translation is “one hundred thousand welcomes”, or “you are welcome, a thousand times, wherever you come from, whosoever you be.” That sums up the hospitality of our hosts, Tom and Patrica. Fresh flowers and a bottle of wine greeted us along with the warmth and humor of Tom and Patricia.
Their house is so comfortable and welcoming. They have worked hard to make our stay as simple as can be. We enjoyed looking out every morning at the Napoleonic Signal Tower over in Finavarra, the rainbows over the bay and the local residents walking their dogs on the beach. Nearby Ballyvaughan was a very friendly village with an excellent restaurant, Monks at the Pier with excellent seafood and another, the Snug Inn Pub that had delicious soups and chowders. We found the Burren to be a fascinating place with cairns and portal tombs dating back to 3000 BC. We also were able to use this as a convenient base to go up to the Connemara area and learn about the bogs and peat and to south to Dingle.
The house is very roomy and has a remarkable library for you to browse. The kitchen had everything we needed but to be honest with such fine seafood and tasty Irish dishes at nearby restaurants, we didn't find ourselves doing much cooking. There were plenty of cups, wine glasses, whiskey glasses, pots, pans, etc. Everything we need if we had wanted to cook.
I truly wish we could have stayed longer. Tom and Patricia, thank you so much for sharing your bit of heaven with us.
Comfortable home overlooking galway bay
It has 5 bedrooms!
House contained everything we needed
Tom is a great host and explained everything but was not intrusive
Also was quick to answer any queries by phone
The setting is amazing with your own access to a beach - the beach is stony so need shoes but there are plenty of sandy dunes and the dogs really enjoyed this
Great to sit outside as we had some lovely days
All in all a great stay -hope to be back soon
We stayed at this amazing house and location for two weeks with family and our dogs. The location could not be better - a 30 second walk and you are at the beach for your morning stroll and evening walk. The beach is stony so you need to wear something on your feet (even in the sea) but there are big sand dunes to play in if you want. The gardens are large and secure - perfect for our dogs. We could launch the ball while sitting on the patio so the dogs got some exercise and we got to sip our wine - doesn't get much better. The house is well fitted out, clean and spacious. The views from the living room and kitchen are fabulous and the sunsets wonderful. We had some real good sunshine and then days of all four seasons in one but it is Ireland so shorts and raincoats are necessities. Ballyvaughan is the nicest village in the area. The tea rooms are a must and L'Arco (Italian restaurant) and Monks (seafood) were both great. In fact no matter where we went the food was delicious. Trips to Burren Perfumery, Ailwee Caves, Cliffs of Mohar and Hazel Mountain Chocolate Factory are all worthwhile and handy to drive to from the house. There are some amazing walks that you can do in the area too. Overall our stay was wonderful and we were all sad to be leaving. I'd recommend this property to anyone who wants a rural peaceful location, fantastic views of the sea, handiness to a beach, large safe secure garden and also the ability to visit all the attractions the Burren has to offer. Tom the owner is very friendly, not intrusive but there if you need him.
Perfect location for what we were doing and the views were spectacular.
Tom and Trish were great. They were very helpful and gave us some great ideas. The house worked out great and was just what we were looking for. We would definitely use them again.
Glorious views and fantastic location
Absolutely beautiful location for exploring the Burren. Tom is very friendly and helpful. The sunsets and sunrises are lovely. Kitchen pans and dishes are plentiful and good quality. Easy to get anywhere in the Burren. House very private and quiet. We are very happy with our stay and highly recommend this property to everyone. Ballyvaughan is delightful and several great restaurants in all directions.
Lovely house in a perfect setting
We had a wonderful time staying in this house and are very happy that we found it.
The location is fantastic - the panoramic view of Galway Bay from the house is breathtaking. And it is incredible having the sea right at the bottom of the garden.
The house is in an ideal position for exploring the Burren. Walks around the area at this time of year are fabulous, the wind so fresh that after a minute one was totally refreshed. (Do remember to bring wet weather equipment for walks in wintertime).
The house is warm and comfortable. It was heaven to lie or sit in front of the fire with a glass of wine and a book. The owners sourced some local turf for us and were altogether extremely helpful and friendly.
We have rented many holiday homes in different parts of Ireland and we thought this one was terrific value – I would say at least 40% below the cost of similar houses we’ve rented in the past. Incredibly, there was no breakage deposit, no cleaning charge or charge for linen. Most unusual and very refreshing. There is a charge for utilities but the owners allowed a certain amount of usage free and, despite being winter, we did not exceed this limit.
This is a lovely holiday home in a very beautiful part of Ireland and we highly recommend it. We will be returning.
