Lewes, the historic county town of East Sussex, is a mixture of the impressive, unusual and the intriguing. Situated on the banks of the river Ouse and at the heart of the South Downs National Park, Lewes is a picturesque town steeped in history.
Initially a Saxon village, the Norman built Lewes Castle still dominates the townscape. Adjacent to the Castle is the Barbican House Museum and just a short walk through Southover Grange Gardens is the beautiful 15th century timber-framed Anne of Cleves House and the remains of the Lewes Priory .
There are many places to visit in Lewes, so take the time to meander through the mediaeval heart of the town with its twisting streets and tiny twittens exploring the towns rich heritage. With a great range of independent shopping, antique centres, art galleries and a tempting variety of local eateries and restaurants on offer its a great place to visit.
Golf: Visiting Lewes Golf Club for the first time takes you on a magical mystery tour - up a single lane with passing places, past picturesque houses reminiscent of a trip to Cornwall, and then up and up to the top of the chalk cliffs - to arrive to spectacular views over the South Downs and the historic town of Lewes with its Norman castle standing proud.
And that is just the start. The golf course which was first played in 1896 offers rewarding golf to players of all abilities. The head greenkeeper and his staff ensure that the course and greens are maintained to the highest standard throughout the year. As the course is set on chalk downland it is never waterlogged and we do not have temporary greens in the winter - perfect for all year play with no trolley or buggy bans (unless exceptional conditions prevail)!
To top it all, the views from every hole are unsurpassed. From the 8th green, the highest point on the course, there is a 360° view to the North Downs and south to the sea. Why not look at the gallery of photos of the course.
Lewes Golf Club is proud of its tradition of being a friendly club. Whether you are interested in membership, society golf or playing as a green fee player, you can be assured of a warm welcome.
