About Lorena Burke

We want you to enjoy time relaxing with your family in this home. Jeff and Lorena live in the Detroit area and spend lots of their time in northern Michigan with family and friends who live here. We enjoy exploring the outdoors, swimming, hiking, biking, boating, fishing, skiing and any other excuse to be outdoors. This house is an investment in our future, someday we may want to live here in the north full time. We look forward to the opportunity to make your time in northern Michigan as rewarding and special as we have always found our own experiences here.

Lorena Burke purchased this house in 2016

Why Lorena Burke chose Traverse City

We are certain that your time in The Lake House will be memorable. The seclusion of the home, with easy access to the pleasures of Traverse City and the surrounding areas make this a perfect vacation spot for you and your family and friends. There are two very special opportunities during TC summers, the Cherry festival and the Film Festival. Both are worth time in Traverse to appreciate. Come explore!

What makes this house unique

The fact that this home is on a quiet branch of Rennie Lake connected to but separated from the busier, more populated areas is a plus. The location steps away from hiking trails on state land makes it a wonderful place to "get away from it all" in all seasons. The proximity to undeveloped land makes your view of the lake spectacular - no other cottages or homes can be seen. Even your neighbors to the left and right have maintained a privacy screen of native trees and plants. The house is big enough to accommodate your extended family, a place for kids down, adults up, or space to separate families with shared space in the living areas upstairs. In addition, it is close enough to make Traverse City easily accessible. You will love the chance to explore the area again and again.

FYI the following items are included for your use.

laundry detergent

dishwasher detergent

tissues

toilet paper

dish soap

House on Rennie Lake

  • 4 of 5

Everything was clean and welcoming; furniture was comfortable and in good condition. There were plenty of towels and washcloths, and adequate utensils were present for meal preparation. Boats and pfds were in good working order. A few plumbing, hardware, and HVAC issues needed attention, in particular the air handling in the basement bedroom and bath. Overall, the house was a good base of operations to explore the area.

The Perfect Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a girls weekend here and our stay was great! The home had everything we could have possibly needed and was very clean and comfortable. Despite the weather, we were able to enjoy our coffee in the morning and our wine in the evening outside enjoying the beautiful view. This was the perfect location to get away from everything for the weekend and still be able to enjoy all that traverse city has to offer. Lorna and Jeff were great to work with and we can't thank them enough for the wonderful experience!

A peaceful, relaxing home.

  • 5 of 5

This property was exactly what we were looking for, a wonderful home located in a peaceful, relaxing, quiet area. We were there for a family wedding on Suttons Bay and with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms everyone was comfortable and had plenty of space. The home is also very clean, spacious, and well stocked.

We enjoyed early morning coffee on the dock and just the peacefulness and sounds of nature. We even saw a few deer in the morning getting a drink of water from the lake. We also enjoyed the kayaks that are provided and gathering around the fire pit after dinner. Our wedding was just beautiful and the whole family had a great time.

Thank you Lorena and Jeff.

It was Girls week to relax and recharge our battery from stress of everyday life and much needed res

  • 5 of 5

We found the area very peaceful, which is what we were looking for, everything was great the house was clean and very well stocked, even though we had taken some supplies with us, we were surprised at what was available. It was great for the six of us woman to be able just to sit around and relax and be able to just do what we wanted. We thank the home owners for opening their home to us and allowing us to the pleasure of enjoying it. We plan to do this again in the near future God willing. We liked being able to go out and enjoy some of the sights around the area and even going to the island for a day. But most of all just relaxing and enjoying each others company. Thank you again.

Great place for a quiet getaway

  • 4 of 5

This is a great property if you are looking for a quiet and/or active lake getaway. The owners provide everything you need to Kayak, Canoe and/or fish. The house has several games, lots of space, cable and high speed internet. They have a very big grill, big deck and really nice firepit. Truly everything you would want for staying out in the woods near a lake. The house is very quiet and if you go out on the lake it is usually even quieter. The lake is also good for kids wanting to swim. Our 8 and 9 year old boys had a great time swimming. (Note: there is not a place for the kids to jump since the lake is very shallow around the edges, so consider taking tubes. They have a couple blow up rafts there.)

The bed pillows are rather flat so I suggest bring your own. One of the queen beds is low in the middle so it is a little uncomfortable for two people to sleep on it. Given it is a house in the woods, and a rental property, you should expect to see bugs in the house, especially the lower level. I didn't necessarily see more bugs than I would expect given a rental property in the woods, but its something for those not used to living in wooded areas to think about.

If you are staying here just to visit the Traverse City beaches and area then it may not be best location. As I mentioned it clearly provides everything you need for a quiet getaway, but driving to the sites around Traverse City take at least 25 mins. We wanted the getaway and to visit all the sites in the area. In hindsight, we probably should have stayed here for 4-5 nights, then stayed in downtown TC or along the bays for a couple nights to take in all the sights without all the driving.

Owner's Response: We are happy you found our home well suited to a relaxing lake vacation. We work hard to provide everything you might need for a family vacation on the lake, rain or shine. It is definitely a shallow lake, perfect for children as you noted. We do provide the floating devices for the pleasure of our guests as the lake cannot be both shallow (great for kids) and deep enough for diving near the shore. I'm sorry you found a concern with insects. As you noted, we are in the woods and screen doors on the sliders must be closed at all times to prevent the insect neighbors from taking up residence inside. We carefully clean at the end of each guest's stay, ensuring that all insect friends are moved to the outdoors. Unfortunately by the end of a week long stay there may again be intruders. Many people who have specific preferences in pillow size or shape will travel with their own. Pillows are scheduled to be replaced for the 2019 season. Thanks for letting us know your concern about the bed, we will certainly check it out. As advertised we are 14 miles from Traverse City. We are sorry you found the travel distance to town to be too great . We find that the distance is as advertised, and a drive of 25 minutes in Northern Michigan is a relatively short distance to travel. In addition, our rates are much less for a large group than renting hotel rooms in town. That said, it can be a very special experience to spend a night on Grand Traverse Bay, too. We appreciate your thoughtful reflection on your personal response to your stay at our home. The things that you found will surely help others make the correct decision when choosing a rental for their vacation.

Enjoyable Summer Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We have been going to Traverse City for many summers. With grown children, this house has room to spare for three adult couples. The wooded lake view is nice from the deck. This is a quieter part of Rennie lake, offset from the larger part with most of the boat traffic. This made it nice for peaceful kayak outings. Indoors, the family room was comfortable, kitchen well supplied, and the dining room fit us very well. The second living area /rec room / TV on the lower floor, with walkout, and two bedrooms and a bathroom gave us extra space. We enjoy golf, mini-golf, winery tours, restaurants, shopping, etc. which were a short drive away...Planning to come again next year!

Traverse City was listed on National Geographic's 10 Best Summer Vacation spots in 2012. From the 180 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline (including both East and West Grand Traverse Bay) to the 140+ inland lakes in the area, this is a vacationer's paradise. This house is located in a quiet area 12.8 miles from Downtown Traverse City. There is state land to hike on, horseback riding in the north woods (Sandy's Stables and others) and all types of water or winter sports available on site and in the nearby area. If you'd rather just watch, the equestrian events at Flintfields are 25 minutes away in the summer. You can mountain bike on the VASA trails, or even ride snowmobiles or off road vehicles on state land nearby. There is live music in town, the National Cherry festival (July 2-9, 2016), the Traverse City Film Festival (July 26 - 31, 2016), and a farm market on Saturdays in the parking lot on Munson Avenue by the "Open Space". Tour the winery's on the Mission or Leelanau Peninsulas (also called "god's Country"). Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore is within an hour away. Stop in to the breweries in TC for great food and great beer. Shopping in downtown Traverse is exceptional. You can even attend a movie at the reconditioned State or Bijou theaters. Head out to the historic Commons on Saturday afternoon for the indoor marketplace. If you are a hunter there is plenty of state land to tempt your skills. If you are a downhill skier, Crystal Mountain is within an hour, the Boynes and Nub's Nob within 2 hours. Cross-country ski enthusiasts will appreciate the Sand Lakes Quiet area where you can avoid the roar of the snowmobiles. There are even casinos, in TC, in Petosky or hop on up to the the UP and the Soo. All aspects and experiences associated with northern Michigan are accessible from this area. Come check us out and find your bliss!
