About Robert King
Robert and William live at Cortijo Opazo all year round and spend most of their days either working in the garden, on the vegetable plot or preparing the accommodation for guests. When not doing one of these activities they might be found walking in the valleys and mountains that surround the house with their dogs, Rosie, Oska and Ella.
Robert King purchased this Apartment in 2003
Why Robert King chose Portugos
The Alpujarras is a very special area that captivates visitors with its charm. When you visit you will quickly understand why we chose to live here. It has a strong and particular cultural identity, the people who live here are proud of their heritage, a heritage that is still strongly in evidence and in daily use. Whilst quite cosmopolitan in terms of the number of different nationalities that live here the Alpujarras is very firmly Spanish and it would be impossible to imagine this ever changing. Tourism is very welcome but it is not an area of dead holiday homes, it is a place where people live, work and enjoy life. There is everything you need here: food, water, humanity and the beauty of the Sierra Nevada. The decision to live here was a quick and easy one.
What makes this Apartment unique
What we enjoy about living at Cortijo Opazo, besides the dramatic views, is the fact that we are situated in the countryside half way between the villages of Pitres and Portugos, being 1.5km from each. As such, we can easily 'pop out' to the shops and enjoy a drink at one of the bars without having to use the car. Ensuring that our guests have the best possible holiday is how we earn an income. So, whilst making sure visitors have all the privacy they could wish for, we are available to give you any information you may need and generally to make sure the accommodation is in the best order possible. This extends to our garden. We are horticultural enthusiasts and work outside every day to create a very special place for relaxation.

Great accommodation in this fabulous location Robert and William are perfect hosts.
We really enjoyed our stay at Cotijo Opazo, the accommodation was first class and the views are to die for. There are great walks from the door step and surrounding area and the guides provided by Robert and William helped us make the most of our stay. We would recommend a stay here for anyone wanting a taste of life in the high Alpujarras and hope to return in the future.
Exceptional views and very relaxing
We had a lovely week staying at Cortijo Opazo, the property was clean and comfortable with everything we needed in the kitchen. We particularly enjoyed the private terrace where many hours were spent eating, drinking and reading. The gardens were a joy to wander around and we felt very well looked after by the owners. We were particularly grateful to the walking routes that were provided as they took us confidently into the mountains which we enjoyed. We were travelling by motorbike which added an element of excitement as the roads were spectacular to travel on! A great base for exploring the Alpujarras .
Up high in the mountain, the cottage was very comfortable with some very beautiful sceneries. The property has an amazing garden too. Robert offered us a welcome drink and attended to our stay whenever we had any queries. The recommendations for the local restaurants was also very useful. We loved the occasional visits from the two little dogs! ( very well behaved and they won't enter the house if you don't encourage them). I am glad that I found this quaint cottage. Will return again.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments, we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and we look forward to seeing you here again.
Lovely relaxed and elegant apartment with personal attention to detail
This was without doubt exactly what we needed for a relaxed de-compression time after a strenuous year at work, a house move, and our wedding. The apartment was nicely laid out and equipped (with a varied and interesting selection of books); the shaded terrace allowed for out-door living, the garden was a lovely addition - places to sit and read, or have a drink; and the setting was perfect - just the sound of sheep and goats (and sheepdogs sometimes!) and very few cars passing. Robert and William are gracious hosts who made sure that everything was going to be right for us - and also great cooks.... We will for sure be back.
Thank you for your comments, we are pleased that Cortijo Opazo offered just what you were looking for. Hope to see you here again for some more relaxing times on the terrace.
Delightful base for hiking in Alpujarra
Have recently stayed in this warm and cosy apartment in Cortijo Opazo. We so enjoyed our stay; when weather was cold outside we were really comfortable within and when the sun shone, the view from our terrace was unequalled. Hikes, using literature prepared by our hosts William and Robert, were quite superb and took us on routes other guides did not include, and so it proved to be an excellent centre. The real bonus for us was to find fan-lipped orchids in the paddock area - what a joy, and the meet and greeters, Ella and Oska, made us feel really at home.
We enjoyed a wonderful week at Cortijo Opazo in mid-September. The setting could not be more beautiful and peaceful. Our apartment was comfortable, well stocked and very tastefully decorated. We enjoyed two dinners prepared by William and wish we had planned to have more - great food and excellently prepared; guests should definitely plan to eat some meals right there on the patio. The hiking guides that William and Robert have prepared are excellent with essential details that will help even the worse navigator find their way. We highly recommend a stay at Cortijo Opazo and hope to return for another visit in the future.

The main beach at Salobrena is about one hour away. The Costa Tropical is not as intensely developed as other areas of southern Spain and there are a number of less well known bays along protected stretches of coast that we can point you towards.
Malaga is served by many airlines and is about 2hrs by car. Almeria is about 2.5 hours by car. Granada is the closest airport at 1 hour 30 minutes drive and is served by British Airways from London City airport, or by internal Spanish flights. You can reach us via public transport - there are three buses a day from Granada. We will be happy to give advice.
Orgiva is the closest town of any significant size and is about 40 mins away. Local villages of Pitres and Portugos are within walking distance (1.5km) and have a variety of shops, banks, bars and restaurants. The city of Granada is one hour and fifteen minutes by car, but can be accessed by bus. The Sierra Nevada ski slopes are less than 2 hours away. Everything else you could possibly need to enjoy your holiday is on the doorstep.
The Alpujarras is a wonderful place for a holiday and for relaxing generally. It is ideal for walking and offers a vast range of options from challenging high level snow line walks to casual meanderings around the valley. Wherever you go you are accompanied by the sound of water, either from the racing Rio Trevelez and Rio Poqueira, or from the innumerable irrigation channels delivering water to the cultivated land. It is a unique area, treasured by the Moors until they were expelled by the Christians in the 15th century, and still shows many signs of their occupation. Most notably the style of Berber architecture, little white box houses with flat grey roofs supported by sturdy chestnut timbers.
Many people choose to use this area as a base for visiting the city of Granada and the magical Alhambra palace, or for day trips to the coast, but many more are content simply to relax and unwind, enjoying one of the most tranquil holiday spots in Europe. Every season has something special to offer in an area famed for its array of wild flora and fauna. Other activities you can pursue here include painting, horse riding, paragliding, canyoning, guided walks, cycling, sitting, thinking and mellowing. There are a variety of restaurants around including two vegetarian establishments. There are local produce markets, bakeries, a travelling greengrocery van and a fish van to meet all needs. Once you are here, there's no need to leave.
