You will love this spacious, secluded gem. Seven miles outside the charming village of Highlands and worlds away from the stress of city life, this lovely home is a welcome retreat. Situated among trees on a 33 acre gentleman's farm, it has a wonderful sense of privacy. Built in 2004 utilizing native timber to compliment its natural setting, this lovely home seamlessly combines elegance with rustic charm. Rise in the morning to a lovely view over fields and mountains. Spend the day antique shopping in Highlands, hiking to a local waterfall, or just lounging on the porch with a good book. In the evening enjoy a private sauna, a relaxing soak in the oversize whirlpool bath, or a glass of fine wine beside a crackling fire. Then slip between luxurious sheets on a King tempurpedic bed and drift off to sleep while listening to the soft sounds of crickets in the woods, or even the occasional far off call of a great horned owl or gentle trilling of a whip-poor-will.

Beautiful pine board finish interiors and lovely oak floors are found throughout the house. Take in the mountain views from the wrap around porch, the covered outside dining area, the entire main level and even the master bedroom!

The main level features a Great Room with vaulted ceilings and a commanding floor to ceiling fireplace with stunning custom handmade tiles framed with rock work. A pull-out entertainment center with 40" flatscreen TV can be the center of attention when desired or closed off when not. The main floor has a full bath with shower and washer/dryer as well as a half bath with pedestal sink topped by a hand-thrown ceramic basin and large antique stained glass window.

The modern fully appointed kitchen is open to the great room. The kitchen boasts a gas range, two ovens, microwave, separate ice maker, dishwasher, and beautiful Silestone counter tops. The range is situated in the kitchen's large central island, which also has seating for 5 making it an excellent hub for socializing. For more elegant dining there is the 8 seat dining room adjacent to the great room with a handsome Ralph Lauren Danby dining table, or enjoy the air and the view from the 4 seat outside covered dining area.

Upstairs you will find two bedrooms both with private baths. Both upstairs bedrooms have very comfortable king beds with 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. The "Senior" master bedroom has a two person sauna, private sun deck, and ample closet space. It also has an en-suite private bathroom featuring a 6 jet two-person tub, double head shower, lovely double sink vanity, custom tile work and bidet. The "Junior" master bedroom also has a private en-suite bathroom with shower and custom tile work.

Downstairs you will find two bedrooms, one with a King bed and one with a queen and a double bed. The downstairs bathroom is shared between them.

About owner/property manager

Rick has lived in the Highlands area for over 35 years. An avid hiker, golfer and lover of the outdoors, Rick felt an immediate bond with these beautiful mountains from his first visit. He has been to many corners of the world, but when he returns to Highlands he always feels he is returning home.

Why owner/property manager chose Clayton

Highlands has so much to offer both to the long term residents, and visitors alike. The splendid natural beauty that surrounds it is hard to match anywhere in the world, but the charm and sophistication of Highlands is what really sets it apart from the average mountain town. World class restaurants, golf, shopping and more are found in abundance in Highlands. It is a place that delights in every season.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Rick has built a number of homes in the Highlands region over the years, but the Jewel of the Woods is his crowning achievement. It is built with a level of care and attention to detail that is getting harder and harder to find. Its location combines the tranquility of the forest, the simple pleasures of the pastoral homestead, and the luxuries of a modern home into an experience that is hard to rival.

Labor Day Weekend

  • 5 of 5

This Labor Day weekend was our second year at the Jewel of the Woods mountain home. It really is so beautiful with wonderful views of the mountains. If you are lucky and have a clear night you can see so many stars and constellations, a very magical sight!! Rick is the perfect host and makes sure you have everything you need!! Our family loved the relaxing weekend.

Beautiful property, Peaceful, well appointed and amazing views

  • 5 of 5

The owners communication was fantastic. Brand new grills both gas and a big green egg. We picked blueberries, visited with the animals and had a family of deer greet us each morning. Only 10 to 15 minutes from downtown Highlands - peace and serenity are well worth the drive,

Great Time at the Jewel!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the Jewel. This was probably the most well supplied and appointed home we have stayed at. Everything you could possibly need (except food) was there for you. Very close to Highlands, NC if you want to visit. Good instructions for everything in the house. Thank-you Rick for an awesome stay. We will be back.

Our family had a wonderful Easter at Jewel of the Woods!

  • 5 of 5

The house was gorgeous! We loved sitting out on the back porch and taking in the view. There was a great chiminea which made chilly evenings on the porch a little warmer.

This was the cleanest rental I have ever stayed in! The linens were top notch. We enjoyed hiking, waterfalls and Highlands for great shopping. There is absolutely nothing I would have changed, everything was perfect!

Thanks Rick for sharing your home with our family. We can’t wait to go back:)

Beautiful home and views

  • 5 of 5

Throughly enjoyed our stay over Thanksgiving week. The home is absolutely beautiful and my kids really enjoyed visiting the pigs and goats. We held our family Thanksgiving dinner here with 15 people and never felt crowded. The roaring fires inside and out were enjoyed by all! We will be back. Loved the Highlands area for shopping and dining. The owner Rick was very nice.

The house was beautiful and everything that was advertised and more! Everything was clean, linens and other items like soap, trash bags, etc were provided. We were very happy with the house and would love to come back one day! It fit our needs perfectly with spacious rooms, large kitchen and living area and beautiful porches where we were able to eat outside and take in the beautiful views. I can’t say enough nice things about jewel of the woods, I highly recommend and so does everyone that attended our trip!
