About Mary Fyntikaki
Hi, I am Mary and with my husband Giannis,we own this family villa. I was born and grew up at this beautiful village and it is a really pleasure for us to have this home which we can offer for your holidays. We take care of our guests personally and we just love making things for you. We have three children, Manos and Stelios are our 'assistants' at the villa, and little Athina-Maria she is just 6yrs. In fact the name of the villa came from her name -'Athinais'.
Mary Fyntikaki purchased this Villa in 2011
Why Mary Fyntikaki chose Platanias
This land was a gift from my parents and we took the decision to built this house because we love this area and the stunning views from the mountains to the sea. The villa is in the most fantastic location tucked away on the outskirts of the village. It was a really hard work but finally it was worth all the time and effort! You can also read the reviews from our past guests! The village of Gerani is still very unspoilt and tranquil and it's a great place to come and relax. Athinais Villa works really well for families with small children as also for honeymoon couples!
What makes this Villa unique
Unique & romantic location! The views are stunning, the place is very tranquil, yet close enough to civilisation to make it perfectly located for all modern amenities.

Lovely villa with fantastic views
The villa was exactly as pictured in the numerous photos on the web site. It was very clean on arrival, and cleaned every 5 days with fresh bed linen and towels. The villa is very well equipped, including all the kitchen / washing / cleaning basics that are often not provided in other villas. The owner Mary was lovely and very helpful. She provided a nice range of essential food products upon arrival, together with some non-essential cake, chocolate and wine!
The bedrooms are a reasonable size, and there is plenty of storage space in each of them for clothes. Each bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. The downside of this is the fact that they are consequently small, particularly the shower cubicles. There is a very large bathroom in the basement with a jacuzzi style bath, but no shower.
The villa is in a very quiet and private position, with fantastic views of both the sea and the mountains (still snow capped when we were there). It is close to all the beach resorts of that part of Crete, and Chania is a very easy drive away (about 15 mins in low season).
There is fast wifi (about 15 mbps) which is still not that common in a lot of properties. The TVs are standard flatscreen with the usual international selection of satellite TV stations. If you want any kind of smart TV functionality you should bring your own streaming box and connect it in via the wifi. This worked really well for us on wet days, with Netflix saving both us and the children!
Don't let the lack of reviews on HomeAway put you off booking this villa. It can be booked through lots of different web sites, each with their own review system. The villa seems to be consistently booked in the peak season, and we saw a visitor book with at least 50 positive entries in it over the last 6 years.
In summary, we were very happy with this villa and would not hesitate to stay there again.
Relaxing under the Cretan sun !
We (4 adults) enjoyed our week at the house. The owner Mary is very friendly and puts a lot of effort in making our holiday as comfortable as possible. On arrival there was wine, fruits and a great homemade chocolate cake.
The house itself ? One of the best we have ever rented. A very large pool and garden with indeed extreme privacy. In the house lots of space and enough bathrooms. The house is well maintained and very clean !
So a house we can recommend to everyone who would like to spend some time on beautiful Crete !
Better than we were expecting!
Many have already commented on the views, the quality of the house and the wonderful hospitality of the owners, all of which is very true. Let me add a few additional comments. The property itself is set in the middle of olive and orange trees and there are no neighbors nearby. If you are looking for someplace quiet and away from everyone, this is your house. The landscaping of the property is also exceptional. Roses and flowers are everywhere and while the views from far away are exceptional, so are those closer to home. My kids loved exploring the grounds.
While the house is secluded, it does not take long (5 - 7 minutes by car) to find yourself in the town of Plantanias, which is lined with hotels, restaurants, grocery stores and shops. We went a bit late in the season when it was not very busy, but the weather was still great (Thanks Mary for that). I would recommend this house to anyone looking to stay in Crete. It is centrally located and easy to get to whatever you are looking for. The beach at Falasarna (Phalasarna) was fantastic as was the Samaria Gorge, although I couldn't imagine going there during the season. The crowds would be maddening.
We hope to come back to this house. It was a perfect get away and we hated leaving.

Dear Roy,Linda,Alexandra and Olivia,
thank you for taking the time to write this review for your stay with us.
We are delighted that you had a great time at the villa and you enjoyed so much the house and the area.
It was so nice to meet you all and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
Mary and family
Villa Athanais is by far the most memorable vacation spot we have ever been to. The house is beautiful, modern, furnished, spacious and its location gives it a breathtaking view of the Cretan seaside on the north, and mountain range on the south.
you can wake up in the he morning and watch the sunrise while eating fresh eggs, vegetables, pastries, etc, brought to you daily by the kind and generous family who owns the house.
Though I would always recommend renting a car whenever going on vacation in such a remote area as Crete! the house itself is in walking distance for healthy children and adults (not all elderly folks) from the village of Gerani and slightly further to the town center.
The Cretan food is delicious and the taverna down the hill from the villa (though with a limited menu) is a really good place to have homemade lunch or supper at very affordable prices.
It would also be important to mention that we had brought our 2 year old child with us and found that ( apart from the staircases) the house was very well equipped for children and babies. Cot, play areas, toys, etc.
All in all we had an extremely enjoyable stay in Crete thanks to the Fintikaki family and their wonderful villa. We definitely recommend it to everyone going to Crete!
Thanks a lot Mary and to your wonderful family
For the cookies and cake!

Stunning place lovely Family
A beautiful house of very high standard, all equipment one could need.Lovely swimming pool, well maintained. Views were exceptional, only matched by the kindness of the owners. We enjoyed it very much and would highly recommend.
We have almost no words about our stay, because everything was just amazing, nice quite place, breathtaking view, helpfull owners, the house was perfectly clean, beautiful garden...there was nothing more to wish. We will never forget our stay in this villa! Many thanks to Mary and Giannis for a very big help with our wedding! We will definitely come back again!!!
Villa Athinais is quietly situated in a beautiful part of Chania, the village of Gerani ,very close to the famous sandy Blue Flag beaches of Gerani and Platanias.
The real joy is the sheer tranquility, waking up in the morning hearing the birds and sitting outside by the pool gaping at the amazing views over the blue sea. At night, you can sit at the balcony and watch at the spectacular night sky!
The location of the Villa is close to some of the regions most favoured attractions & offers plenty to see & do for everyone, of all ages and interests.
*Platanias: just 4km away from the most cosmopolitan area of the west Crete , village of Platanias, with many restaurants , shops , beach activities and nightlife.
*Falassarna beach (42 km): Falassarna Beach has won prizes for being the most beautiful beach in Crete and is always one of the top ten beaches in Europe, with its wonderful, fine white sand and warm, crystal-clear water.
*Balos ( ): Balos is among the most beautiful beaches in Chania Crete. It is located on the north westernmost spot of the prefecture of Chania. It is seen as a lagoon from the hills above the beach.
Balos has white sand, soft seabed and crystal water. Opposite the beach, there is a rocky island called Gramvoussa and on top of this island, there is a steep Venetian castle with gorgeous view to the region and the sea.
*Elafonisi (63 km): Elafonisi (or Elafonissos) is a small islet connected to the rest of Crete by a shallow reef that can be crossed when the sea is calm. This islet is lying on the south-west corner of Crete and can be reached by boat from Paleohora or by car from the village of Vathi, until a point and then cross the reef.
Elafonisi (Island of Deer) is like paradise on earth, and possessess a wonderful beach with pink coral sand and crystalline waters.
This magical place was deserted for a long time but now it has become a popular sight and can get pretty crowded during high summer season. Only a couple of cantinas can be found on the beach and no accommodations are available, but camping is allowed.
