About Greg Spencer

The Toccoa House Story

Proprietor Greg Spencer initially discovered the Blue Ridge area on a backpacking trip to the Cohutta Wilderness in the 1980’s. Soon after he was awestruck by the experience of kayaking the Ocoee River. A short time later, enamored of the area, Greg embarked on a land purchasing mission that led him to 12 acres of undeveloped acreage.

Greg Spencer purchased this cabin in 1991

Why Greg Spencer chose Blue Ridge

Amazed by the beauty of the Toccoa River and the inspiring views of the surrounding mountains, Greg wasted no time in securing what is now known as the Toccoa House Properties.

During the 1990’s Greg built a small cabin, The Riverside Cabin, on the Toccoa River, and envisioned a larger house that he later built on the ridge above: The Toccoa House, completed in 2000. Next came The Carriage House in 2002, and the in-ground, seasonally heated swimming pool in 2007. Our newest addition, The Grey Heron House, was completed in late 2007.

Dana is a native of North Georgia and brings Southern Charm to each Guest Experience, handling the Reservation Process, Housekeeping and Custom Arrangements.

Our pets and property mascots, Budrow, Lily and Bobby Jo (BJ is named for the Blue Ridge couple, Bobby and Jo, who gave him to us, thank you so much!!), may greet you if they happen to be on the property when you visit. While they often bark, what they really want is for you to pet them!

Thank You So Much For Visiting,

Dana and Greg

What makes this cabin unique

Since our 16 acre property spans over 1200 feet of Toccoa River frontage, and consists of a peninsula created by a horseshoe bend in the river, we are surrounded by water on three sides. We are close to town, yet secluded and private. We offer four distinct and private rental cabins. The cabins are all walking distance from each other and can be booked together, making Toccoa House Properties an ideal destination for large groups. Combined, our cabins sleep 40 (13 bedrooms, 11 full baths, 2 half baths).

The Toccoa House is our largest accommodation, with three levels and room for 14 to sleep comfortably. The Grey Heron House is our next largest cabin, sleeping 10 on three levels. The Carriage House is our mid-sized rental cabin which sleeps 6. The Riverside Cabin is our smallest cabin, with room for two right on the banks of the Toccoa River

Perfect vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

This was such a great place! It was one of the best cabins we've ever rented. The cabin itself was beautiful, plenty of space for everyone and fully stocked...they even had a crockpot! Kitchen was nice and big with good appliances. Two coffee pots, two dishwashers and the laundry room had two dryers. There was a second fridge downstairs too. Great amenities for a multiple family vacation. We spent a lot of time around the big kitchen table playing games. It really did feel like the owners thought of everything. Lots of attention to detail (like having the right coffee filters already there). We really enjoyed the grounds too! The pool, the walking trails, the area by the river, the corn hole and fire pit, even a swing set on the property that our kiddos enjoyed a few times. Perfect distance to town too. We hope to come back again!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for noticing! We are perfectionists to a fault which can be a good thing in the cabin rental business, but perhaps a bit annoying to those who work for us. We hope to see you again. You were great guests!!

Spacious cabin with a cozy feel

  • 4 of 5

We visited with 2 other families (11 of us total) and everyone had a great time. The place was clean and cozy (important since it was unseasonably cold), and had a lot of space for a party of our size. We enjoyed the hot tub, pool table, and watching playoff games on the big screen TV. The extra large dining table is a nice touch. We’d definitely visit again. We even discussed returning when it’s warmer (than our 20 degree days) to take advantage of everything that the spacious grounds has to offer (pool, trails, river, etc.)

Beautiful property in a nice quiet area

  • 4 of 5

Property was Amazing!!! Loved the amount of spce available and the surrounding areas.

Couple of things that need to be corrected:

1. Need a better knife to cut vegetables and a small cutting board.

2. We were without power and water for due to some weather for about 6 hours and we had to leave the cabin due to not having the ability to run the toilets. They should invest in a generator so guests are not impacted when there are weather issues.

3. We paid for a cleaning fee for the cabin but open arrival all the rooms had visible dust clusters in several rooms. The room in the third floor bedroom closest to the bathroom , if you sit on the headboard or lay down flat you will see to your right and above all the dust. Second floor room facing the river the same thing, there was dust all over the wall.

A deep clean of the walls needs to be completed so future guests don’t have that same experience that we had. We thought about if that was not clean properly what else is not cleaned appropriately.

Again, loved the property and we will definitely use again but these items are simple fixes that will have a huge impact for future stays.

Thank you!!

Owner's Response: We are so glad you found our property "Amazing!!" We will certainly take your comments into consideration, but here is our feedback regarding the guest recommendations: 1. There are several knives and we will check and have them sharpened as needed. Most guests seem fine with the large cutting boards, but we can add a small one as well. 2. The power was actually only out for less than three hours due to an abnormal high wind event (the guests had gone into town and came back well after restoration of the power). We do own a generator and as I said on the phone I would bring it over, but the power was restored fairly quickly, and the guest said the generator was not needed. 3. We typically provide a deep cleaning after our busiest season (October-January), and quarterly. This guest requested an early check-in which we accommodated. It is hard to both deep clean and provide an early check-in during our busy season when we have back to back same day cleanings. Once again, we are glad you loved the property and we will take care of these "simple fixes."

Gorgeous house with lots of space

  • 4 of 5

The house is gorgeous and has tons of space. The downstairs entertainment/game room had more than enough seating and the TV was HUGE! Greg was very response to multiple questions we had.

We keep coming back to this great property!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of friends has spent a fall weekend in the mountains for well over 20 years and Toccoa House is our favorite place. We've been coming here for 7 years and each year, there's a new upgrade. Toccoa House is one of those rare houses where there is a bathroom for each bedroom--a definite plus. The bedrooms are spacious and attractive. The common areas have room for 10 people to do their own thing or gather at the table. We love to cook and appreciate the well equipped kitchen. The hikers, photographers, and fishermen enjoy the great outdoors. We've already reserved the place for next year and highly recommend it.

Best in Blue Ridge!!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 10 adults stayed at the Toccoa House for our annual fall get-together. It was by far the best rental property we have ever used in the Blue Ridge area. The house was very roomy and exceptionally clean.

The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare all our meals. The owner went above and beyond to have both a regular coffee maker and Keurig available along with an assortment of coffees. Having an extra refrigerator/freezer in the downstairs was a big plus with such a large group. The large table accommodated everyone for meals as well as game nights. The beds and other furniture were in great shape and comfortable. We enjoyed the well marked hiking trails and grounds down by the river. Though there are several houses on the property, we were not so close that we could see any of them from our house. The open area next to the house with the fire pit and corn-hole boards was a big hit. We had planned to do some adventures in the area, but everyone so enjoyed the property that we seldom left. We just enjoyed being together in such a beautiful relaxing location. The property is an easy and quick drive from Blue Ridge yet you feel like you are away from the hustle and bustle of life. The directions were very clear and easy to follow. Greg and Dana were delightful host/hostess. They were prompt to answer all of my questions and make sure we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend the Toccoa House and their properties for anyone looking for an awesome get-away in the Blue Ridge area.
