About Greg Spencer

The Toccoa House Story

Proprietor Greg Spencer initially discovered the Blue Ridge area on a backpacking trip to the Cohutta Wilderness in the 1980’s. Soon after he was awestruck by the experience of kayaking the Ocoee River. A short time later, enamored of the area, Greg embarked on a land purchasing mission that led him to 12 acres of undeveloped acreage.

Greg Spencer purchased this cabin in 1991

Why Greg Spencer chose Northwest High Country

Amazed by the beauty of the Toccoa River and the inspiring views of the surrounding mountains, Greg wasted no time in securing what is now known as the Toccoa House Properties.

During the 1990’s Greg built a small cabin, The Riverside Cabin, on the Toccoa River, and envisioned a larger house that he later built on the ridge above: The Toccoa House, completed in 2000. Next came The Carriage House in 2002, and the in-ground, seasonally heated swimming pool in 2007. Our newest addition, The Grey Heron House, was completed in late 2007.

Dana is a native of North Georgia and brings Southern Charm to each Guest Experience, handling the Reservation Process, Housekeeping and Custom Arrangements.

Our pets and property mascots, Budrow, Lily and Bobby Jo (BJ is named for the Blue Ridge couple, Bobby and Jo, who gave him to us, thank you so much!!), may greet you if they happen to be on the property when you visit. While they often bark, what they really want is for you to pet them!

Thank You So Much For Visiting,

Dana and Greg

What makes this cabin unique

Since our 16 acre property spans over 1200 feet of Toccoa River frontage, and consists of a peninsula created by a horseshoe bend in the river, we are surrounded by water on three sides. We are close to town, yet secluded and private. We offer four distinct and private rental cabins. The cabins are all walking distance from each other and can be booked together, making Toccoa House Properties an ideal destination for large groups. Combined, our cabins sleep 40 (13 bedrooms, 11 full baths, 2 half baths).

The Toccoa House is our largest accommodation, with three levels and room for 14 to sleep comfortably. The Grey Heron House is our next largest cabin, sleeping 10 on three levels. The Carriage House is our mid-sized rental cabin which sleeps 6. The Riverside Cabin is our smallest cabin, with room for two right on the banks of the Toccoa River

Perfect vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

This was such a great place! It was one of the best cabins we've ever rented. The cabin itself was beautiful, plenty of space for everyone and fully stocked...they even had a crockpot! Kitchen was nice and big with good appliances. Two coffee pots, two dishwashers and the laundry room had two dryers. There was a second fridge downstairs too. Great amenities for a multiple family vacation. We spent a lot of time around the big kitchen table playing games. It really did feel like the owners thought of everything. Lots of attention to detail (like having the right coffee filters already there). We really enjoyed the grounds too! The pool, the walking trails, the area by the river, the corn hole and fire pit, even a swing set on the property that our kiddos enjoyed a few times. Perfect distance to town too. We hope to come back again!

Absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a long weekend in April. The owners were so friendly and helpful. The cabin was breathtaking!! The cabin was spotless, organized and they had everything we needed. You get a total bang for your buck. We had 10 adults and slept comfortably with an extra bed and not all beds had 2 people. Check in and check out were a breeze and the owners flexible and always available if we needed back them. We will definitely be coming back!!

Owner's Response: This guest and her group were fantastic!! They were great communicators, left the property spotless, and were very quiet. They asked us for hiking recommendations as well as restaurant recommendations. We would welcome them back any time.

Perfect for a group!

  • 5 of 5

Nine of us, friends and family, met at Toccoa House for a long weekend . . . some from south Georgia, some from North Carolina. What a beautiful place to spend time together! The living areas are very nice and well appointed with a great kitchen. The bedrooms were a little plain-Jane, but I can't say this was a problem; not that much time was spent in them. And so many things to do! We enjoyed the pool table and the hot tub and deck. There are plenty of televisions, but I can't imagine wanting to watch one when surrounded by such peace and serenity. It was too cold to swim, but there is a lovely pool that could be enjoyed in warmer weather. We walked down to the river and found horse shoes, corn hole, a Frisbee course, and seating to enjoy the sound of the water running its course. I have no problem recommending Toccoa House as a marvelous destination when you need room for a lot of folks.

Big open layout home

  • 3 of 5

The home was open layout with a bathroom in each bedroom. We had lots of family and friends come to visit so it would have been nice to have a main area bathroom. The kids enjoyed the hot tub, pool, and game tables. We cooked all but one meal at the house so the big kitchen area was nice. Although, the large cupboards were not sturdy and one broke off the hinges and others were about to break. Each bedroom was nice and big with its own small tv. The beds were sub-par with terrible worn out sheets and the windows opened but there were few screens.

Our understanding was that we were right on the Toccoa River but it was way down the steep mountain and we couldnt easily let the kids go fishing or relax down there. Blue ridge had cute shops and friendly people.

Owner's Response: We are pleased these guests enjoyed the large, open lay out of this house. They are correct about having LOTS of family and friends visit which evidently stretched the capacity of the five full baths. We do not recommend this house for more than the maximum capacity of 14 guests, especially when many of them are teens. The comment about the kitchen cabinets is curious about not being sturdy, to which we disagree. When the guests reported the two loose cabinets doors, we arrived to make any needed repairs, and found the two doors hyper-extended (opened more than the hinges allowed). We were able to quickly make repairs with screws and found no problems with any of the other ones. The cabinets hold two dozen regular glasses, wine glasses, cups, etc. so they are definitely sturdy. Like anything, they need to be handled carefully. We will look into the beds and linens issue and make any needed upgrades. This is the first that any guest has mentioned something. We use high quality mattresses and linens and strive to keep them in good condition. We are not sure how this guest got the impression the house is "right on the Toccoa" because our photos, description, and property map show the house on the ridge overlooking the river. We did notice numerous kids using the various trails many times to the river, and there is also a large, parking area on the river available to guests, and from there the large, level 1200 feet of river frontage is wheelchair and stroller accessible, so it's the best of all worlds. We have one of those rare properties with both great views and great river access. We do have many large windows, and have a screen for each one. We have strategically placed half of the screens at the most appropriate locations. Guests tell us they like screens but also love our awesome views of clear glass without screens,
