About Nancy Barnes

My husband and I were both born in Munising and I grew up there, he in Lower Michigan. He moved back in 1974 and we raised our three children here in the UP. We currently live across the street from the cottage and will be available for any assistance or information you might need. We love to travel and enjoy meeting new people. We rented our current home as a seasonal rental for 25 years, so we know what our guests want in a rental. We have a lot of repeat guests who come back year after year to enjoy Shelter Bay and the surrounding area. We are confident that you will love it too!

Why Nancy Barnes chose Upper Peninsula

My grandfather initially owned the property where we currently live, and it was eventually passed down to me. Shelter Bay has always held a special place in my heart and I consider it my little piece of heaven on earth. We acquired the property where the cottage that we now rent to guests is, because we hope to leave it to our children someday. In the meantime, we want others to enjoy Shelter Bay as much as we do.

What makes this cottage unique

My husband built the cottage and we have taken very good care of it over the years. We lived in it for 6 years giving it our own personal touches. The cottage is very tastefully decorated to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. The best feature is the day house for your use, which is just across the street and down a short wooded path to the lakeshore. There you can sit either inside, or out on the deck with a magnificent Lake Supeior view. It has comfortable furniture, and a small dining room table to enjoy your dinner. Open the windows with the screens and feel the lake breeze while inside. It's a perfect spot anytime of day or night!

Honey Moon Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 days at the Shelter Bay Cottage for our honeymoon. The cottage was clean, accommodating, and has all the amenities needed for a quiet getaway trip. We were so taken by the cuteness of the cottage and the dayhouse. We spent most of our time relaxing at the dayhouse, which has a gorgeous view out onto lake Superior. Nancy and Jack were very kind, hospitable, and helped us plan our hiking and biking day trips. We originally expected our honeymoon trip to be a short quiet decompression time. But, the beauty of the pictured rocks area in combination with the amazing Shelter Bay Cottage property made this one of the best trips we've taken so far in our lives. We are returning this fall for another weekend getaway because we loved it so much!

What a great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Immaculately clean, comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated, with a nicely landscaped yard and patio, this place was exactly as advertised. We’ve stayed at many vacation getaways over the years, and this one was definitely a cut above most. If silence is paramount for you, the cottage’s proximity to M28 might be an issue, but it wasn’t for us, and outside noise was minimal inside the cottage. One of our favourite things about this place was the private day house with huge picture windows overlooking Shelter Bay. What a great place to read, talk, play games and just hang out, bug free and protected from the elements! The owners were friendly, gracious and accommodating. Thank you, Nancy and Jack, for making such a wonderful place available. If circumstances permit, we will be back, for sure!

Super property; wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Shelter Bay last week. Everything was great. The house was nicely decorated and very comfortable. The location was very convenient. The entire trip was wonderful. There is a chipmunk on the property who is very friendly. He ate out of our hands. Very relaxing! You won't be disappointed with this property!

What a wonderful view

  • 5 of 5

We have been going up to this area for over ten years, but this was our first stay with Nancy and Jack. It is a lovely cottage that is nicely decorated, very clean, kitchen is well stocked. It provides everything you need for a wonderful week in the UP. The day cottage is a real asset, it provides you with a beautiful view of the lake. It was nice to be able to sit on the deck and enjoy the lake or sit inside. We will come back again. They are wonderful hosts that want to make sure you enjoy your stay.
