About Nancy Barnes
My husband and I were both born in Munising and I grew up there, he in Lower Michigan. He moved back in 1974 and we raised our three children here in the UP. We currently live across the street from the cottage and will be available for any assistance or information you might need. We love to travel and enjoy meeting new people. We rented our current home as a seasonal rental for 25 years, so we know what our guests want in a rental. We have a lot of repeat guests who come back year after year to enjoy Shelter Bay and the surrounding area. We are confident that you will love it too!
Why Nancy Barnes chose Au Train
My grandfather initially owned the property where we currently live, and it was eventually passed down to me. Shelter Bay has always held a special place in my heart and I consider it my little piece of heaven on earth. We acquired the property where the cottage that we now rent to guests is, because we hope to leave it to our children someday. In the meantime, we want others to enjoy Shelter Bay as much as we do.
What makes this Cottage unique
My husband built the cottage and we have taken very good care of it over the years. We lived in it for 6 years giving it our own personal touches. The cottage is very tastefully decorated to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. The best feature is the day house for your use, which is just across the street and down a short wooded path to the lakeshore. There you can sit either inside, or out on the deck with a magnificent Lake Supeior view. It has comfortable furniture, and a small dining room table to enjoy your dinner. Open the windows with the screens and feel the lake breeze while inside. It's a perfect spot anytime of day or night!

Our wonderful stay at Nancy and Jack Barnes cabin in Au Train
What a wonderful experience we had in your cabin. Nancy and Jack thank you so much for your hospitality and welcoming us into your home. The cabin was fantastic and the view from your little place on the lake was absolutely lovely. The cabin was so clean and had everything that we needed it was so close to everything. We will for sure be back next year. Thank you again we had a great time celebrating our 40th anniversary.
Shelter Bay Cottage is a wonderful place to spend a vacation. There are beautiful views and it was so great to be right on the water. The cabin and the day house were cozy, clean, and well-stocked. Jack and Nancy were generous and kind hosts. Definitely a place we will visit again and again.
A Superior Experience
Everything written here is spot on. Shelter Bay is a quiet refuge. The main cottage makes for a clean, comfortable home base. The lake house is a one-of-a-kind jewel. Hosts Nancy and Jack Barnes bring it all together with their friendly welcome and generations of local knowledge and lore.
Great place to stay in the UP!
We chose this rental based on others' reviews. We are so glad that we did! The cottage is super clean and plenty big for two people. The location is great and the day house across the street with the view of Lake Superior is beautiful! And best of all, the hosts are amazing! They are friendly and helpful and great to have nearby in case you need anything while you are there. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this place to others!
We’re glad that you chose Shelter Bay Cottage for your trip to the UP this year. It was a pleasure to meet you, and we hope you return to visit us in the future.
Stunning beauty, wonderful location, gracious host
The Property - The cottage is clean, cozy and quiet. It provides everything you need for a comfortable stay. The sitting area is comfortable and welcoming. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you might need to prepare meals. The bathroom as well was clean and well stocked with necessities. We found the bedroom to be super cozy and just what we needed after our daily excursions. The big bonus is the day house. With stunning views of the lake and Au Train island it's the perfect setting for a night cap, quiet dinner or silent reflection.
The Hosts - Jack and Nancy could not have been better. Enthusiastic and welcoming we quickly considered them friends rather than just property owners. They maintain a beautiful property and balance well the need to provide service while allowing you to enjoy your stay unencumbered.
The cottage is conveniently located just outside of Au Train and is an easy drive to Munising. While originally unsure if we would feel disconnected from Munising that feeling was quickly dashed as we found the drive quick and beautiful. I would recommend this property to any friend or relative who asked about a place to stay and we looking forward to coming back again soon.
This one is a gem! Highly recommend. Immaculate and cozy.
We stayed for three nights and could not have been more pleased. This is a great location with plenty to do in the area. We had a blast touring waterfalls and lighthouses. Sunrise and sunset were extraordinary each day. Loved the day house. This property is kept in immaculate condition. One could quite literally eat off the floor!! Your hosts have thought of everything you will need for your stay and are helpful yet unobtrusive. Book this one !
Located adjacent to the Hiawatha National Forest, hike out your front door to explore the old rock kilns and cemetery. Enjoy swimming and picnicking at a inland lake nearby with a sand beach at a roadside park. You'll also have access to a quaint day house located directly on the water edge of Lake Superior.
If you have chosen the check payment option instead of credit card, guest will be required to pay the balance in the form of a check upon check-in. Owners would consider a minimum 2 night stay at $185/nt based on their discretion.
