About Nancy Barnes

My husband and I were both born in Munising and I grew up there, he in Lower Michigan. He moved back in 1974 and we raised our three children here in the UP. We currently live across the street from the cottage and will be available for any assistance or information you might need. We love to travel and enjoy meeting new people. We rented our current home as a seasonal rental for 25 years, so we know what our guests want in a rental. We have a lot of repeat guests who come back year after year to enjoy Shelter Bay and the surrounding area. We are confident that you will love it too!

Why Nancy Barnes chose Upper Peninsula

My grandfather initially owned the property where we currently live, and it was eventually passed down to me. Shelter Bay has always held a special place in my heart and I consider it my little piece of heaven on earth. We acquired the property where the cottage that we now rent to guests is, because we hope to leave it to our children someday. In the meantime, we want others to enjoy Shelter Bay as much as we do.

What makes this cottage unique

My husband built the cottage and we have taken very good care of it over the years. We lived in it for 6 years giving it our own personal touches. The cottage is very tastefully decorated to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. The best feature is the day house for your use, which is just across the street and down a short wooded path to the lakeshore. There you can sit either inside, or out on the deck with a magnificent Lake Supeior view. It has comfortable furniture, and a small dining room table to enjoy your dinner. Open the windows with the screens and feel the lake breeze while inside. It's a perfect spot anytime of day or night!

Cute, clean and cozy!

  • 5 of 5

Jack and Nancy's place is perfect! The view from the day house is incredible! It is a great spot for morning coffee and an evening drink. Both the cottage and the day house are incredibly clean and well put together!

We will be back! Thank you. :)

Love!

  • 5 of 5

We came up for our 10 year anniversary and had the absolute best time. Jack and Nancy are the nicest people around. They're always willing to offer tips on where to go and things to do. We were extremely pleased with every tidbit of information and suggestion they provided to us. The cottage was exactly what we were looking for. It felt like our little home away from home. It was very very clean and had everything we needed. The day house over looking Lake Superior was amazing! We enjoyed sipping coffee in the mornings and a beer in the evening while taking in the beautiful scenery. We made so many great memories in the UP. We will definitely return and tell our friends about our stay at the Shelter Bay Cottage.

Clean, Cozy and Comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

This place was just perfect! My husband and I had the most relaxing vacation here, the cottage is immaculate and well equipped. The day house was just perfect with a spectacular view of Lake Superior, we enjoyed our morning coffee here each day and looked forward to it each morning. Both places are tastefully decorated, and the craftsmanship on each is spectacular. John and Nancy were outstanding hosts and always made it a point to see that we were doing OK. The only minor suggestion I have is to include under amenities or elsewhere is that bath towels are not included. When I read that linens were included, I just assumed that meant bath towels too so I didn't pack them, but like i said, very minor, we just ran to town and bought new. You surely won't be disappointed with this property and you'll just adore your cordial hosts.

Perfect place to unplug!!

  • 5 of 5

The Shelter Bay Cottage was even better than the pictures show. It was meticulously clean and user friendly. Two friendly little chipmunks visited often. The Day House was beautiful and the perfect way to enjoy the lake without mosquitoes or ticks. Jack and Nancy had a million suggestions for stuff to do and even when it rained we had so much fun. This was our 25th anniversary and this was the best place to get away together. The kitchen had everything you can think of and then some to make anything. The bed was cozy and comfortable and the walk in closet was PERFECT! The bathroom had plenty of room for our stuff and the walk-in shower was perfect for starting your day. The cottage is about half way between Munising and Marquette, so your not bothered in the hustle and bustle of town but still close enough to enjoy the attractions. I recommend eating at the Brownstone. Even the burgers were delicious! Ask Jack where to find the "brookies" at, if you like to fish. He knows all the secrets. I can't think of a single negative thing to say about our stay. This was the perfect place, in the perfect location, with the perfect amenities, with the perfect owners and we loved every minute of our stay.

Serene and relaxing with great view!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely serene property. The location is quiet and nestled among trees. The main house has everything that a couple would need including a very comfortable kitchen and living room area. Just across the lane is the lake house which is a cozy place to relax and enjoy the expansive view of Lake Superior. The owners are nearby and gracious and accommodating. Nancy shared her still warm home baked rhubarb cake with us. Peaceful and relaxing.

Honey Moon Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 days at the Shelter Bay Cottage for our honeymoon. The cottage was clean, accommodating, and has all the amenities needed for a quiet getaway trip. We were so taken by the cuteness of the cottage and the dayhouse. We spent most of our time relaxing at the dayhouse, which has a gorgeous view out onto lake Superior. Nancy and Jack were very kind, hospitable, and helped us plan our hiking and biking day trips. We originally expected our honeymoon trip to be a short quiet decompression time. But, the beauty of the pictured rocks area in combination with the amazing Shelter Bay Cottage property made this one of the best trips we've taken so far in our lives. We are returning this fall for another weekend getaway because we loved it so much!
