About Nancy Barnes
My husband and I were both born in Munising and I grew up there, he in Lower Michigan. He moved back in 1974 and we raised our three children here in the UP. We currently live across the street from the cottage and will be available for any assistance or information you might need. We love to travel and enjoy meeting new people. We rented our current home as a seasonal rental for 25 years, so we know what our guests want in a rental. We have a lot of repeat guests who come back year after year to enjoy Shelter Bay and the surrounding area. We are confident that you will love it too!
Why Nancy Barnes chose Au Train
My grandfather initially owned the property where we currently live, and it was eventually passed down to me. Shelter Bay has always held a special place in my heart and I consider it my little piece of heaven on earth. We acquired the property where the cottage that we now rent to guests is, because we hope to leave it to our children someday. In the meantime, we want others to enjoy Shelter Bay as much as we do.
What makes this Cottage unique
My husband built the cottage and we have taken very good care of it over the years. We lived in it for 6 years giving it our own personal touches. The cottage is very tastefully decorated to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. The best feature is the day house for your use, which is just across the street and down a short wooded path to the lakeshore. There you can sit either inside, or out on the deck with a magnificent Lake Supeior view. It has comfortable furniture, and a small dining room table to enjoy your dinner. Open the windows with the screens and feel the lake breeze while inside. It's a perfect spot anytime of day or night!

The property was better than advertised. Very clean and modern. The view of the lake just great.
The property was just what we wanted. The folks there were more than friendly.
Unfortunately there was a power failure and we had to leave. The owners refunded
us a day's rent, their idea! What more could we ask? Thanks for your friendly manner.
Great vacation home
We got to spend a weekend at Jack and Nancy's rental recently and really loved it. The house is very nice, well equipped, and it is so quiet. Definitely the place you want to go to relax and get away from it all. The little house by the lake is just beautiful and the perfect place to have coffee and watch the sunrise. Jack and Nancy are wonderful and we will be forever grateful for their advice on things to do in the area. Thanks for everything!
Perfect place to get away
If you're looking to de-stress and disconnect this home is for you. It has all the basics and comfort. The surrounding beauty lifts the spirits. Nancy and Jack are perfect hosts. Helpful and informative but not intrusive. The day house is heaven on earth. The firepit welcoming. The home is cozy and comfortable. It's well suited by its location to be the perfect starting point for day trips. It's clean and fresh and well maintained. Would come back and stay everytime I visit the U.P.
Welcoming, friendly, and gracious hosts. The cottage where we ate and spent our nights (because most of the time was spent at the hermitage) was very clean, well maintained, and happy. The hermitage right on the shore of Lake Superior is exceptional and a place for quiet reflection, eagles, at least one otter, and many sights, sounds, and smells of trees, waves, and fresh air. If your hope is for these gifts, we recommend you consider a stay.
A wonderful time -
Let me add my voice to others who said Shelter Bay was a wonderful get away: clean, relaxing and great hosts! Is it telling that 50% of the pictures we took during our trip were taken at Day House?
Perfect Home for Upper Peninsula Stay
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and wish we could have stayed longer. Beautiful quiet area within easy driving distance of Painted Rocks, Munising, and Marguette, The home is immaculate, well equipped, quiet and comfortable. The day house on the lake is where you will want to spend as much time as possible just enjoying the view. Nancy and John are lovely, generous hosts (probably the nicest we have ever rented from). They are available and willing to sharing their knowledge of the area, helping you make the most of your stay while respecting your privacy.
We highly recommend this house !
Located adjacent to the Hiawatha National Forest, hike out your front door to explore the old rock kilns and cemetery. Enjoy swimming and picnicking at a inland lake nearby with a sand beach at a roadside park. You'll also have access to a quaint day house located directly on the water edge of Lake Superior.
If you have chosen the check payment option instead of credit card, guest will be required to pay the balance in the form of a check upon check-in. Owners would consider a minimum 2 night stay at $185/nt based on their discretion.
