Take a peak at the Hideout Cabin along Bear Creek riparian area with free wi-fi! A secluded vacation cabin rental perfect for hiking, bird watching, horseback riding, dark star filled skies and for rent by owner where you can kick and relax. Bring your own horse! The Hideout Cabin at Double E Ranch offers self-care pens, covered and uncovered. You have use of our competition quality 130 x 280 paneled arena with great footing, a round pen, hot walker and wash rack. This cabin was described by a recent guest as "deliciously private" and is adjacent to nearly 25 square miles of public lands adjoining the Gila National Forest.

Situated at the end of the road along Bear Creek, this charming 560 square foot cabin has everything you need to make you feel right at home, for any length of stay. Filled with antique accents from a gentler era, the furnishings for the Hideout Cabin include custom designed candle holders made from 130 year old French oak wine barrel, a silvered wall mirror, vintage crystal oil lamps and custom hand crafted kitchen cabinets. At the end of the day, sleep won’t take long to come as you experience the peace and quiet of the star-filled sky, all snug as a bug in your cozy Egyptian cotton linens on the luxury queen bed with a repurposed barn door head board.

Adjacent to the dining area for 4, the kitchen of the Hideout Cabin is fully furnished with full-sized appliances, including custom designed shelves, a gas oven/range, dishwasher, pots and pans and the other necessities for cooking, and even an antique cabinet filled with a unique display of ornate drinking glasses. The private bathroom has a larger shower with seat, a pedestal sink, plenty of plush, fresh towels, blow dryer and a storage cabinet for your toiletries. The living area is complete with an Italian leather love seat and matching over-sized easy chair, TV/DVD player. There is even a BBQ grill, charcoal and lighter fluid provided for outdoor cooking. The only thing missing is you!

If you love to start your day drinking in the natural beauty of your surroundings, the deck of the Hideout Cabin was made for you.

Start your day off with a hot cup of coffee, rocking on the front porch of the Hideout Cabin, nestled among the Piñon, juniper, cottonwood, sycamore, black walnut, live oak and elm trees. With the creek just a short walk from your cabin at the end of the road, if you sit quiet, you’ll likely spy deer, roadrunners, wild turkey and jackrabbits in the fields, and eagles, hawks, and falcons in the sky.

Right out your door you’ll have access to 360 private acres of a variety of terrain, including miles of “no trail" hiking and a privately protected riparian area where you'll see hundreds of native and migratory birds. The adjacent 15 square miles of public land proves you really are at the end of the road. If your sense of adventures requires more, hop in the car for a short 20-minute drive and you’ll have access to 3-million acres of public lands, including New Mexico State Land, Bureau of Land Management and the Gila National Forest, where you can hunt, rock hound, and even explore Native ruins.

If are looking for an equestrian experience, the Hideout Cabin is just a stone’s throw from several of our corrals and a 250' x 300' manicured arena with near perfect footing. If you’d like to bring your own horse, we have self-care paddocks available. Guided horseback rides are available from a local outfitter. Whether you explore on our little piece of the Land of Enchantment from your own two feet, from the back of a horse, or the comfort of your car, one thing is for sure. Once you settle in, you won’t want to leave.

About Debbie and Alan Eggleston

In 1996 Alan (a commercial airline pilot) and Debbie (an administrative assistant) decided to pursue their lifelong dream of ranching. Their search took them to southwest New Mexico and the rural area of Grant County where families of the original settlers still farm and ranch.

In the late 1800's Joe and Ethel Hooker slowly acquired nearly 70 sections and until 1996 ran their cattle and farmed. Alan and Debbie purchased about 30,000 acres of the Hooker Ranch and began their adventure. Running Texas Longhorn cattle who are well suited to the arid, rugged terrain offered guests from all over the world the opportunity to experience life on a ranch.

Why Debbie and Alan Eggleston chose Gila

Now retired from ranching, Debbie and Alan have converted all the cabins to "self catered" style, furnished in the western tradition so you, too, can feel the peace and natural wonders of southwest New Mexico.

At an elevation of 4800 feet above sea level, the climate offers mild weather in every season, low humidity levels, amazing sunrises and sunsets, abundant wildlife, spectacular vistas, and the magic of New Mexico.

What makes this cabin unique

Your imagination is the only limit to things to do at New Mexico Cabin Rentals in Gila.

At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, the pace is slower, making it easy to unplug from the stressful rush of urban life. While there is plenty to do, there are no watches, clocks, itineraries, schedules, and certainly no traffic lights or gridlock to deal with – well, except for the occasional cattle crossing. Activities happen at your own pace and it won't take long for you to reconnect with your own natural rhythm.

Bird watching: Bear Creek meanders through nearly 2 miles of the private land surrounding New Mexico Cabin Rentals and is home to hundreds of migratory and indigenous birds. The giant cottonwood and sycamore trees, Piñon, juniper, and live oak trees provide the perfect habitat for a large variety of bird species. In fact, approximately 339 bird species have been sighted a few miles away, in the Gila National Forest.

Hiking: Feel free to walk about on our 360 acres with private access placing you adjacent to 6500 acres a Wildlife Preserve. At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, you can stroll nearly 2 miles of our privately protected riparian area along Bear Creek or travel your own path. Climb to the top of Turtle Rock and explore “Apache Corral.” Wander the ridges looking for the ancient homes of the Mimbres Indians who lived along Bear Creek 1100 to 1300 years ago. We don't “make” the trails, you get to blaze your own!

Stargazing: The night skies here are just amazing which is why amateur and experienced astronomers flock to New Mexico to experience the densely star packed nights. Of course, one of the best places to view the millions of stars is right from the deck of your New Mexico Cabin Rental. Just remember that although New Mexico doesn’t have a lot of bugs, those that are here are attracted to light. To really enjoy the night skies, we recommend you leave your porch light off while sitting outside – you’ll see more stars and attract fewer pesky bugs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Deb and Alan, Thank you so much for the stay on your ranch! Everything was fantastic. My only regret is not scheduling more time with you. Next time, I will! Thanks again!

Perfect getaway in the high desert.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Hideout cabin for nearly three weeks during the month of October.

We had a fabulous time. The property sits in a high valley. Less than a quarter mile from the front door is a trail that takes you up to the top of the high hills surrounding the property. We climbed that trail and were rewarded with fantastic, long views that extended into Arizona.

At night, the lack of light pollution gives one a spectacular view of the night sky.

The cabin is charming. We loved every minute that we were there. In hindsight, given the cold nights and the warm days, we should have remembered to bring house slippers, but that was one of the few regrets we had.

The kitchen is easy to cook in, and contains most of the basic equipment one needs. Those who love spicy food may wish to bring their own spices with them, and maybe your favorite sharp knives and such. While the nearest full grocery store is 30 miles away, there is a convenience store of sorts over in Cliff, a short drive.

Our hosts were wonderful. They catered to our needs while leaving us completely alone, which was what we had gone in search of: A chance to disconnect from the daily world and reconnect to nature and ourselves.

And yet, if we chose to, we could re-plug in with Wi-Fi and Netflix.

We will recommend this property to all of our friends.

P.S. Those who are recyclers should plan on packing their recycling out as there is no way to recycle while on the ranch. They don’t have the facilities for obvious reasons.

Beautiful, Quiet & Private

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay, even though we were off property most of the time with a family get-together. Would love to go back & spend some lazy days there! The cabin was very clean and perfect for the two of us & our dogs. We arrived in a torrential rain storm with the electricity out. Debbie & Alan left a lantern lit for our arrival & called us once we did arrive to make sure we were okay. We look forward to returning!

Fantastic vacation!

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for peace and quiet. I wanted to relax, do some art, and hike in the Gila area. I accomplished all of those goals. I enjoyed starting my day out on the porch hearing the birds chirping and enjoying the company of a friendly neighborhood gecko. The ranch is in a beautiful location and the cabin is adorable and appointed with everything I needed for my week's stay. I enjoyed chatting with Debbie one day and appreciated her thoughtfulness when she brought me some fresh asparagus from her garden. So sweet. Thanks so much for a perfect vacation! 😀

My husband and I feel so fortunate to have been able to stay on the Double E Ranch at Hideout cabin. Debbie and Alan have worked so hard to maintain the true feel of the old west. One week they would be there working 9-6 from Monday thru Sunday.

It is the true west. We saw cowboys on horses rounding up cattle and had to stop for 5 mules on the road to the cabin. There were cattle grazing everywhere. Needless to say the beef tastes wonderful.

Our charming cabin was so clean and cozy with everything we would need including a stock of DVD's for us to use. We had everything we needed and loved every picture and piece of furniture and Egytian cotton sheets and cozy bed. It was also nice that they had a washing machine and dryer for our use, too. We enjoyed the porch everyday and the weather was exceptional, especially to us northerners. We loved hiking around the ranch and eventually ventured off to a few of many beautiful hiking trails a few miles from the ranch. Debbie left a great packet of detailed information on the ranch and things to do in the area. Because we were there for one month, we had time to view the Cliff Dwellings, The Catwalk and the fish hatchery which were so interesting and even had a visit to El Paso. Really the area of the Gila National Forest is one of the most beautiful areas in the U.S. The pictures on the Eggelstons website are true to what you will see. We also saw havelinas, deer and turkeys. It was such a great feeling to return to our cozy cabin every day that we hated to leave this quiet, pieceful place to visit. Thanks, Debbie, Alan and Chris for being so helpful and for the information that you provided. We can't wait to come back!!!! Mike and Jan

Quiet, but not much of a view.

  • 3 of 5

Living up against a beautiful mountain chain ourselves, this wasn't what we were expecting when it comes to the cabin being secluded from other cabins and their location. If you are looking for a peaceful place, this ranch was that. But if you want a more private cabin with the view of being able to see the glorious mountain chain all around you, this isn't the place to go because of their location.

When it came to notifying us with the last minute details, this was poorly done. They had a family emergency, which we were sorry to here. They should make sure who ever is left in charge, completes this last step before their guests arrive.

The cabin itself was mostly clean except for some animal hair on cushions and comfortable with all you would need for a relaxing get a way except for your food.

Owner's Response: As I indicated in my email apologizing for the series of unfortunate events leading up to your arrival, I am happy to give you a full refund. Understanding your disappointment, I would much rather you be left with something positive about the experience. Please, send me your mailing address Our pricing is quite reasonable, the cabins are well furnished and clean. No other visitor has ever been unhappy with the scenery, views, location. Your comment about animal hair on the dining chair cushions was absolutely justified. I would have found it just as upsetting.
