Debbie and Alan Eggleston
About Debbie and Alan Eggleston
In 1996 Alan (a commercial airline pilot) and Debbie (an administrative assistant) decided to pursue their lifelong dream of ranching. Their search took them to southwest New Mexico and the rural area of Grant County where families of the original settlers still farm and ranch. In the late 1800's Joe and Ethel Hooker slowly acquired nearly 70 sections and until 1996 ran their cattle and farmed. Alan and Debbie purchased about 30,000 acres of the Hooker Ranch and began their adventure. Running Texas Longhorn cattle who are well suited to the arid, rugged terrain offered guests from all over the world the opportunity to experience life on a ranch.
Why Debbie and Alan Eggleston chose Gila
Now retired from ranching, Debbie and Alan have converted all the cabins to "self catered" style, furnished in the western tradition so you, too, can feel the peace and natural wonders of southwest New Mexico. At an elevation of 4800 feet above sea level, the climate offers mild weather in every season, low humidity levels, amazing sunrises and sunsets, abundant wildlife, spectacular vistas, and the magic of New Mexico.
What makes this Cabin unique
Your imagination is the only limit to things to do at New Mexico Cabin Rentals in Gila. At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, the pace is slower, making it easy to unplug from the stressful rush of urban life. While there is plenty to do, there are no watches, clocks, itineraries, schedules, and certainly no traffic lights or gridlock to deal with – well, except for the occasional cattle crossing. Activities happen at your own pace and it won't take long for you to reconnect with your own natural rhythm. Bird watching: Bear Creek meanders through nearly 2 miles of the private land surrounding New Mexico Cabin Rentals and is home to hundreds of migratory and indigenous birds. The giant cottonwood and sycamore trees, Piñon, juniper, and live oak trees provide the perfect habitat for a large variety of bird species. In fact, approximately 339 bird species have been sighted a few miles away, in the Gila National Forest. Hiking: Feel free to walk about on our 360 acres with private access placing you adjacent to 6500 acres a Wildlife Preserve. At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, you can stroll nearly 2 miles of our privately protected riparian area along Bear Creek or travel your own path. Climb to the top of Turtle Rock and explore “Apache Corral.” Wander the ridges looking for the ancient homes of the Mimbres Indians who lived along Bear Creek 1100 to 1300 years ago. We don't “make” the trails, you get to blaze your own! Stargazing: The night skies here are just amazing which is why amateur and experienced astronomers flock to New Mexico to experience the densely star packed nights. Of course, one of the best places to view the millions of stars is right from the deck of your New Mexico Cabin Rental. Just remember that although New Mexico doesn’t have a lot of bugs, those that are here are attracted to light. To really enjoy the night skies, we recommend you leave your porch light off while sitting outside – you’ll see more stars and attract fewer pesky bugs.

Peaceful and quiet!! Missed seeing horses in action.
Debbie & Allen were wonderful hosts. They provided everything they promised and much more. Much wildlife and freedom to hike and explore. Many attractions in the area and the local people are so friendly and helpful. We made reservations for next year before we left. Thanks Debbie & Alan! Mike & Sharon Scheel
Birthday vacation getaway
It was an amazing trip to the Gila Mountains! Happy it did NOT snow!! Owners were amazingly accommodating and wonderful! Will visit again soon, perhaps in the summer months! Highly recommend this wonderful VBRO!
We sincerely appreciated you staying with us for your Birthday Getaway! The Gila National Forest/Mountains are truly breathtaking and we're so glad to hear you enjoyed yourself! We hope to see you return for a Summer visit!
Perfect getaway in the high desert.
We stayed at the Hideout cabin for nearly three weeks during the month of October.
We had a fabulous time. The property sits in a high valley. Less than a quarter mile from the front door is a trail that takes you up to the top of the high hills surrounding the property. We climbed that trail and were rewarded with fantastic, long views that extended into Arizona.
At night, the lack of light pollution gives one a spectacular view of the night sky.
The cabin is charming. We loved every minute that we were there. In hindsight, given the cold nights and the warm days, we should have remembered to bring house slippers, but that was one of the few regrets we had.
The kitchen is easy to cook in, and contains most of the basic equipment one needs. Those who love spicy food may wish to bring their own spices with them, and maybe your favorite sharp knives and such. While the nearest full grocery store is 30 miles away, there is a convenience store of sorts over in Cliff, a short drive.
Our hosts were wonderful. They catered to our needs while leaving us completely alone, which was what we had gone in search of: A chance to disconnect from the daily world and reconnect to nature and ourselves.
And yet, if we chose to, we could re-plug in with Wi-Fi and Netflix.
We will recommend this property to all of our friends.
P.S. Those who are recyclers should plan on packing their recycling out as there is no way to recycle while on the ranch. They don’t have the facilities for obvious reasons.
Beautiful, Quiet & Private
We enjoyed our stay, even though we were off property most of the time with a family get-together. Would love to go back & spend some lazy days there! The cabin was very clean and perfect for the two of us & our dogs. We arrived in a torrential rain storm with the electricity out. Debbie & Alan left a lantern lit for our arrival & called us once we did arrive to make sure we were okay. We look forward to returning!
I was looking for peace and quiet. I wanted to relax, do some art, and hike in the Gila area. I accomplished all of those goals. I enjoyed starting my day out on the porch hearing the birds chirping and enjoying the company of a friendly neighborhood gecko. The ranch is in a beautiful location and the cabin is adorable and appointed with everything I needed for my week's stay. I enjoyed chatting with Debbie one day and appreciated her thoughtfulness when she brought me some fresh asparagus from her garden. So sweet. Thanks so much for a perfect vacation! 😀
