We thought Yarraville was a great suburb, with a cute little business district just a few blocks away that had multiple restaurants and bars, a couple of grocery stores, a pharmacy and even a movie theater within a five minute walk. It also had a train stop where we could easily ride into downtown Melbourne within about 15 or 20 minutes. Additionally, our host was very accommodating and gracious, who is respectful of your privacy if you wish, but also close by, and easily accessible by phone or text if you have any questions about the place or the area. It's always great to have a resident who is happy to provide local information that you won't get in the guidebooks. The place was very clean and spacious, which was good for us, since I was there with adult kids who enjoy their space at the end of a long travel day. If you're expecting five star furnishings, you might be a bit disappointed because the place shows some signs of age, but all we needed was a working kitchen, separate comfy bedrooms and a good base to travel from. It was great that if we were tired from traveling, we could also just walk three or four blocks, sit down at one of the restaurants or bars, and get a good feel for the local experience. We could also stock up at the grocery and cook in our own kitchen if we wanted, but after enjoying the convenient and pleasant local experience, we mostly ate relaxed breakfasts, lunches and dinners at what Louise calls "the village" . I researched Yarraville before my trip, and it ranks favorably among the many desirable suburbs of Melbourne. Wikipedia indicates that in 2020, Yarraville was named Australia's best suburb, and fifth in the world. That sounds like somewhat of a boast, but we certainly found it to be pleasing to our tastes. I checked the Wiki footnote, and it was done by a guy named James Manning who apparently polled 20,000 city dwellers to determine the "51 Coolest Neighborhoods in the World." Yarraville is not as high in other rankings, but typically in the top quartile of neighborhood real estate ratings of Melbourne's suburbs that I reviewed. I certainly haven't traveled to all of Melbourne's suburbs, but we did drive a rental car throughout some of Melbourne, and Yarraville seemed to compare favorably. Also- and importantly I think- Louise got far more recent and favorable reviews than other places I reviewed. So, all things considered, we were very happy with our stay in Yarraville, the house and the host.
