We tried to make this a home away from home for your group to enjoy. Although, it will be Cycling focused it will be a great place also for: Fly Fishing, Motorcycle Touring, Waterfall Seekers, Hiking, Hunting, Rock Climbing, Kayaking (Class 4/5 Rapids), Bird Watching, Yoga Camps, Sight Seeing, Artists etc... We are nestled in the foothills of Pisgah and Wayehutta Forest at the bottom of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is the spot where the EPIC 215 Climb starts (Known as a Legendary Climb among Cyclists). Scenic routes are everywhere, road, mountain and gravel. Traffic is extremely low. The Sanitarium has much more than your typical cabin. Currently, sleeps 8+ (soon to be 20+ with external pods (borg style) with 3 full baths and 1 outdoor bath/shower. In addition, we have an RV/Camper site on the property with all hookups (You must inquire about this site). Enjoy the 5+ acres with incredible views and seclusion. There are lot's of maps and other cycling related items at cabin. This is a great place to bring your team camps and/or groups to enjoy all this area has to offer. The views and ruggedness are spectacular. You are only a 25-30 min. drive to downtown Brevard. We can do custom arrangements if needed while you're there as well. Just call or email and let us know what you need for your group and we will send you a quote and accommodate. I am a cyclist and I know what you want! Lot's of Strava segments to gauge yourself against other world class cyclist (or not). You can just roll right up 215 from the cabin and be at the highest part of the blue ridge parkway near Devil's Courthouse and Richland Balsam in a flash. I got hooked on this place years ago and I know you will be also. Don't fret if you're not a cyclist. We are right there near Shining Rock Wilderness and Black Balsam for you hikers as well as a host of other trails. This area is also well known as a fly fisherman haven and almost dead center in the heart of the Land of Waterfalls. Davidson River is approx. 4 miles away (MTB'r's will know what that means). Ride right out of the cabin to Gloucaster Gap and then onto your favorite trail - Farlow, Daniel's Ridge, Butter If shopping is your passion then head over to Brevard or Waynesville. Just over an hour away is the popular town of Cherokee where there is a Casino for any Gamblers. Please come get yourself well at the Sanitarium.

Been a cyclist for 30+ years and love to climb mountains. I found this area on accident when I got lost coming home from florida back in 1998. I've been hooked ever since. The remoteness, ruggedness, and low traffic makes this an epic area for both road and mountain biking as well as hiking, and other outdoorsy stuff. I basically wanted to create a little compound to share the area with others.
Scott purchased this House in 2016
Why Scott chose Balsam Grove
I specifically picked this area due to it's location. You know what they say...Location, Location, Location. If your a cyclist on strava just look up where all the rides go, they go right here. We have one the most epic climbs there is 215. Wanna see how you fare on an 8 mile 7% climbs? Well, it's right out the front door. Davidson River MTB area is only 4-5 miles away and you have all the epic mtb rides at your fingertip as well. I ride it. You don't need to pack up the bikes and drive somewhere...YOUR THERE!
What makes this House unique
We fell in love with this house and location. It needed quite a bit of work and will continue to always be improved up. We have bike wash stations, bike shop with the basics, lot's of chairs, fire pits, horse shoes, outdoor kitchen, walking trails, projector system, wifi, long distance phone, coffee station, on and on....

Our family of eight enjoyed our peaceful stay in Balsam Grove.
We haven’t spent that much time together in years. We hiked, visited several waterfalls in the area. We went kayaking for the first time ever and did a lot of resting in this tranquil sanitarium!! We lived our stay, thank you for sharing your home with us.
Fly Fishing Base Camp
Great property for large group of any type - our fly fishing group used it as a "base camp" to fan out to the water and chase the local trout. Really enjoyed the fire pit outside the front door and the generous amount of sleeping options. A great spot and very economical for large groups.
Relaxing in the rustic outdoors
My family and I enjoyed the beautiful setting of this location. It is near hiking, biking, and waterfall destinations. The owner, Scott, provided us with detailed information about local places we should check out based on our interests. The house has a well-stocked kitchen and everyone enjoyed nightly campfires right outside the front door as well as playing board games on the back porch with a view of the mountains.
Our place is nestled in the beautiful mountains right in the middle of Pisgah National Forest. It is meant to be a launching pad for all your outdoorsy activities then come back and relax and do it again the next day. There is a small grocery store/gas station 1/2 mile away for basic necessities along with a local eatery (Jonie's). The town of Brevard only 30 min drive with a little of everything. The cabin will be fully stocked including a wonderful coffee bar. If you need a night out, shopping, or a tavern Brevard is only 25 min away
