About Melissa Hutchinson

Nick and Missy moved to New Bern, NC in 1988. Nick was originally born in England and led a very interesting life in many different countries. Missy was born in Md but always loved the southeast. After graduating from the Univ. of MD in 1983 we moved to Florida together. In 1988 we decided to sell everything and live on our sailboat, cruise the Bahamas and Florida, and then cruise up the East Coast. We got to NC and haven't left.

Melissa Hutchinson purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Melissa Hutchinson chose Bridgeton

We live in New Bern and saw that it had so much to offer visitors. There were hotels in the area but very very few vacation rentals. We prefer to stay in a home when we travel and so assumed others would as well. So we bought and renovated Bamboo Cottage in 2006. And our wonderful guests have loved it here as much as we have!

What makes this cottage unique

It is close to downtown New Bern, yet is in a quiet village. There is a water access less than a block away handy for launching kayaks or paddleboards (but no parking).

Guestbook comments from the owner

We really enjoyed our time spent here at the cottage. It was nice to come back here after a day spent running around. The accomodations were wonderful!! Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Lovely, cottage - very cozy

  • 4 of 5

We went to New Bern to visit and check out retirement areas. We needed a place to stay that was close to New Bern but quieter. The Bamboo cottage fit the bill perfectly. We brought our dogs along and they enjoyed the walks around the neighborhood. Thanks Bill

My wife and daughter and I recently stayed here for two weeks after moving to New Bern while awaiting the settlement on our house. In short, we loved it! The house is much bigger than it appears from the outside and is very roomy on the inside for a two bedroom home. The neighborhood is very quiet with easy access to downtown New Bern.

We enjoyed this cottage so much. It was exceptionally clean and well stocked with basics needs. It was so peaceful sitting on the front porch. Very quiet neighborhood with easy access to everything.

Quiet, cozy cottage

  • 3 of 5

This cottage is one of the cleanest, best equipped homes we have stayed in. Owners were very friendly and responsive. Our only disappointment is proximity to the river. We did not take our boat and the river is too rough for kayaking, no beach to speak of within walking distance. Other than the antiques mall and driving to New Bern, not a lot to do. There is no view from the nice back deck because of the large trees. But there was always at least a slight breeze on the front porch. A perfect quiet retreat.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed our cottage. There is a water access right at the end of the street and we kayak on the Neuse all of the time. I wish you had asked us, so sorry. New Bern and the nearby beaches are really the main attractions. Thank you!

Just across the Neuse River from the 'Bamboo Cottage' is the town of New Bern with it's many interesting destinations, including Tryon Palace, museums, restaurants and shopping. And if you would like to venture a little further, the ocean and beaches are less than an hour away, and the quaint waterfront towns of Beaufort and Morehead City are even closer. The Croatan National Forest is just outside of New Bern and offers hiking and nature observing. 'Bamboo Cottage' is a great centralized location to explore the coastal area or to stay right around New Bern and relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Other Activities: kayaking, boating and shark tooth hunting (a favorite with the kids)
