About this property

A Luxury barn conversion ideal for visits to the Lake District, accommodates 8

We converted this Lakeland Hay barn in 1992 from its original working state and over the years it has evolved into a beautiful family home. We have character features of stone walls, wooden and natural floors, hay loft, a real log fire and exposed beams. This is a child friendly home with us having brought up our three children here and the facilities offered provide for all family needs.

Set outside the hamlet of and overlooking Gatebeck on the side of a hill with views of the open countryside including the Lakeland fells. 'Canny Brow’ is derived from the Westmorland dialect ‘Coney Brow’ meaning the 'hill of rabbits’. Sheep and cattle are more prevalent now along with plenty of other wildlife. Our location is ideally situated for access into the Lake District, Yorkshire and Lancashire for access to the hills and dales with the market towns of Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale being only a short drive away. In the locality there is a riding school and for the more adventurous, off-road driving, quad biking and paint balling is available. Ideal if your group enjoys alternative activities.

Within walking distance is the village of Endmoor with pub, children’s playground and tennis courts. If you prefer time to relax then our garden is ideal for this. The rear garden provides space for a decent sized badminton play area and the front of the house has a long garden for lounging and games or just kicking a ball around. In the garden there are various outdoor areas for sitting out and enjoying the views over the countryside. There is an eight seat external dining table and chairs at the bottom of the garden away from the house along with a large gas barbecue (gas included), immediate access to the garden from the lounge and kitchen which is ideal for supervising children playing.

We are a rural location which generally means that vehicular access is preferred, and there is parking for up to 4 cars. However, there is a bus service (567) from Endmoor village to Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale and Ingleton. Rail access is provided via Oxenholme railway station on the main West Coast line about 4 miles away. There are plenty of taxi services which will provide transport directly to our home. If you plan on arriving by train ensure to book only to Oxenholme as Kendal is on a trunk line taking you further from our property.

We are close to the coastal area of Arnside which provides fantastic panoramic views of the Lake District across the famed Morecambe Bay and with easy access to the literary famed areas of Beatrix Potter, Swallows and Amazons, Laurel and Hardy and the Bronte sisters. The original Bronte sisters school is within 8 miles of our home and a visit to their museum is within easy access.

You will have full access to all the illustrated areas in the photographs. The accommodation comprises the garden rooms part of the barn. We will be in the other part of the barn.

You can Check in after 4 pm and Check out is 11 am. If you need variations on this do let us know as we may be flexible and able to accommodate.

We appreciate you will have come to get away from it all so we will leave you to get on with your holiday but should you need us we will be on hand to assist as required.

An optional extra is our newly installed hot tub. This is a private hot tub which is available by special arrangement prior to your visit. 3 night cost is £240, 4 nights or more is £360. Please note that this must be booked and paid for in advance. If you would like to book the hot tub please let us know at booking.

What more could you want!
An amazing property with amazing views. The garden was perfect as was the weather. The most equipped property I have ever stayed in-you need it, they have it. A 20-30 minute drive to some fabulous surrounding areas while secluded enough for a relaxing break. Wouldn’t hesitate to book again. Thanks to Ian and Anne-Marie

Exceptional stay
We booked the barn in the hope that it would be a “good” get away for our family. The barn totally exceeded expectations it was exceptional. Ian was very accommodating and helpful gave recommendations on near by attractions and instantly made us feel welcome. As soon as we stepped into the barn there was fresh made cinnamon buns (delicious) the place was VERY clean and homely. The view from the barn was breathtaking, it was an ideal location not to far away from anything but far enough to feel totally relaxed and at peace. There was a hammock and a swing in the garden with a great hot tub. My self and my 4 year old daughter had a lot of fun outside. It suited everyone’s needs and what they wanted from the trip a lot of space for my daughter and I to play( there are badminton rackets, tennis rackets, a boomerang, a large garden swing, the hammock and Ian brought her a kite on one of he day that we had to take everywhere haha. My aunty was enjoying the sun reading her books and the rest enjoyed the hot tub. On an evening we played family games, again, the property had a lot of games, there was always Lots to do. We visited lake Windermere and enjoyed lunch, we went over to south lakes zoo too. Like I say, there is everything you need and more only a short journey away. The barn is highly recommended from everyone in our party and the hosting was impeccable. We will certainly be back.

Fantastic long weekend stay!
A group of 8, plus a well behaved 1 year old, had the pleasure of staying in this lovely property for a long weekend away. Ample space for us all, big kitchen with island which was perfect for setting out our big group breakfasts and dinners in a kitchen which has everything you need! Set within beautiful surroundings with a lovely well manicured garden, ideal for a game of frisbee and a summers evening BBQ! Ian was very welcoming and always on call if anything was needed. Would highly recommend staying here and would love to visit again!

About the host

We arrived at letting our property before a road trip around Italy. We're away - why not we thought? We've met lots of interesting people letting our home and hopefully it will allow us to travel more out of season and visit other places our kids have already visited(!). Its not supposed to happen that way we're sure but we're trying hard at catching up. We both met on holiday in the Lake District, an area which was equidistant from our homes in Durham and Manchester. We ended up moving here after a few years in Manchester together and raised a family here in the Lake District.

Why they chose this property

We met in this area and ended up moving to and living here. We would have guessed that, but by a strange twist of fate this is where we ended up. Looking for a new home within easy driving distance to Manchester we travelled north, then further north, then ended up in an auction bidding on a farm. We won the auction of the parts, but when they were put together as a whole we thought it prudent to withdraw from bidding as we were bidding against the local land owner who we were dependent on providing us access. all worked out well however, they directed us to our barn which we bought. No water, no gas, no drainage, no electricity - no problem! It's in a great location and we're sure you'll agree if you visit us here. We've spent over 25 years 'doing it up' slowly but surely.

What makes this property unique

we're in an ideal location for access to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Morecambe Bay coastal area with fantastic access to the UK motorway network. We're rural, away from the large towns but within 11 minutes of major supermarkets and 5 minutes of local shops and pubs. We're in an idyllic environment with great views over a valley with commanding views all around. Views down to the coast at Arnside and Grange-Over-Sands, across to the fells of the Lake District and up to the north towards the Cheviots and North Yorkshire. We're in a great place for chilling out. Back 27 years ago chilling with a beer and the architect who designed the layout of our barn and brought our ideas together amongst a pile of stones, despite the chaos the building had that feeling of calm then. All we've done is not spoil it and make it available to share.
