About Harold & Marla Johnson
We are a retired couple who moved to Franklin in 2005. Harold graduated from Sarasota High School and ran a construction business specializing in concrete work for 35 years; working exclusively on Boca Grande. He enjoys woodworking, recreating the beauty of an old building and has volunteered over the last 12 years just helping ministries and people in need. Marla is South Carolina girl and enjoys quilting and managing this property. Raised in a minister's home, she loves working with the church and being a part of the "family". They have travelled the world on many missionary endeavors. With 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grands, they enjoy the life that God has provided.
Harold & Marla Johnson purchased this Cabin in 2005
Why Harold & Marla Johnson chose Franklin
We bought this property with 25 acres in 2005. This building was an old canning shed on the lower level and storage on the upper level. Marla's mother suggested that Harold make her a summer house out of this old building. Thus, Granny's Mountain Retreat was birthed. Read the rest of the story when you stay with us.
What makes this Cabin unique
Cowee Valley is quiet and peaceful. It's a place where you can sit on your porch and watch the deer and turkey feed and hear the geese as they fly into the pond closeby. There are times that you can actually hear the creek rushing through the valley. It's an escape from the busyness of life and enjoy, relax and rest.

Clean, secluded, and perfect!
I am so in love with this cabin! It was perfect. My daughter and I came for the weekend to tour WCU and it was a wonderful stay! The property and house were very clean, and it was so reasonably priced! The view is amazing. Thanks so much!
Loved Granny's Mountain Retreat
We had a great time at Granny's Mountain Retreat. It was a perfect location for us. We love the mountain setting with beautiful scenery right outside our windows. It was so quiet and peaceful. The "cabin" was fully equipped, and was spotless. Although we did not meet Marla, we enjoyed our visits with Harold. He made us feel right at home, and answered our questions about the surrounding areas. We highly recommend this VRBO. Donna & Craig Barry, Arvada, Colorado
The changing of the leaves came a little late this year but it came with great splendor. So glad our guests could take in the beauty!
Nice and Cozy
It was super clean and had everything we needed. We would stay there again.
Granny works hard to offer our guests a cozy, warm, clean home away from home.
We had a great time - Having the coffee maker in the bedroom was a nice touch. We had fun photographing all the wildlife; turkeys, birds, deer, elk and the groundhog. Very quiet and relaxing.
Pretty, peaceful ... relaxing! 10/7 - 10/12, 2018
This property is located about 23 minutes north of Franklin, NC. It is situated on a terraced hillside with a northwestern view of the surrounding mountains. Harold and Marla Johnson, the owners, are a very gracious couple who succeed in providing an excellent quality stay for their guests. The cabin/cottage is well-kept, clean, and quite pleasant, with a very comforting "home-away-from-home" feel. During our stay, we enjoyed sitting on a canopied porch swing out on the deck in the mornings, watching several types of birds at the feeder, as well as occasional sightings of deer passing through near the roadside. In the evenings we were captivated by the glorious sunsets, marveling in the magnificent display of colors against the clouds. There is plenty of space surrounding the cabin such that guests are afforded a very quiet, peaceful stay, with the closest neighbor being the owners with their house perched higher up on the hill behind. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and wished we could have stayed longer. We gladly offer our recommendation to all wanting an affordable, wonderful place to escape to enjoy a break from everyday life. Thank you so much, Harold and Marla, for your gracious hospitality!
What a grand week for wildlife! Along with deer playing in the field, the wild turkeys are gathering to entertain. These wonderful guests even left a 🐦 watching book behind for our future guests to enjoy. Thank you!
Beautiful scenery. Quiet and peaceful setting. Cabin was cute as a bug and quite comfortable. Will definitely come back when in the area. Thanks, the Bakers
