Yilawura - A stylish country cottage on 125 acres

Yilawura is all about switching off, winding down, and reconnecting with nature.

The dream was to create a place to escape work life, a place to make memories with family and friends, and a place to nurture and develop for the future.

When we were first introduced to the property we immediately fell in love with the natural beauty of the the landscape, from the striking escarpment that surrounds the property, to the kangaroos and wallabies that roam the paddocks, to the many native birds make their home amongst the grasses and trees.

Since taking on the property, originally an alpaca farm, we have renovated the original farm house to create a comfortable home, with every convenience required to escape and switch off.

We’ve planted more than 300 new native plants and trees, to help support the wildlife and ensure the property is sustainable into the future.

The name yilawura means ‘a pleasant place to camp’ in the local Wiradjuri language, and is both the perfect name for our property, and recognition of the original inhabitants of the Capertee area.

Located three hours west of Sydney, between Lithgow and Mudgee in the greater Blue Mountains, the Capertee Valley (pronounced Kay-per-tee) is noted to be the second largest (in terms of width) of any Canyon in the world - 1km wider than The Grand Canyon but not as deep.

The valley is surrounded by an escarpment of stunning sandstone cliffs, and provides tranquil vistas, serene mountain landscapes, and an abundance of flora and wildlife. Rising majestically out of the valley floor is the monolithic peak, Pantoney’s Crown.

The Capertee area was home to original inhabitants, the Wirdajuri people and was first traversed by European explorer James Blackman, who journeyed through to the Mudgee area in 1821. Sheep properties were later established in the Valley during the 1940’s, and later, the gold rush of the 1950’s resulted in an increase in the colony’s population, while the areas wealth and importance grew as coal, shale-oil and limestone were discovered and mined in the area.

Yilawura is set on 125 acres of undulating native pasture and woodland, and home to an abundance of native Australian birds and wildlife, and a herd of curious miniature cattle.

The elevated location offers stunning 360 degree views of the Capertee Valley and the most spectacular sunset vistas.

Originally set up as an alpaca farm, the property is separated into 12 fenced paddocks and features a dam, seasonal creeks and waterholes, walking trails and view points to explore.

The farm house is surrounded by native gardens, a saltwater swimming pool, and a veggie patch and orchard providing a wide variety of seasonal produce.
