Tarkinegrove is situated in the NW wilderness of Tasmania called The Tarkine and located on the South Arthur River Touring Route, C218 at Roger River, providing easy access to this huge area of temperate rainforest on one side as well as the rugged coastline on the other.
A writer once described the Tarkine as a 'Green Cathedral'. You step inside its 'walls', walk its 'ilseways', navigate its 'rows' and you come to know you are in a sacred and special place. Guests have approximately an acre of lawn around around the cottage to relax and unwind in, making it the an ideal location for families. Pets allowed on a case by case basis due to the resident wildlife.
Stroll across the top bridge to enter the 100 year old semi-botanical gardens containing American Redwoods (one reportedly the biggest in Tasmania), Blackwoods, Basswood (Lime trees), Copper Beech, Weeping Birches, Douglas Firs, Giant Pandanus, Myrtle and groves of Tree Ferns (man ferns) plus many more. All of this is accompanied by a chorus of bird song. Re-cross the spring fed creek at the lower bridge and pass by the Lime tree under the Redwood and your back at your private driveway.
In the warmer weather sit around the spring fed dam to watch 'platty' the playpus fish and play at dusk. March to November you may catch a glimpse of the Freshwater Lobster 'Tayatea'. In the cooler months a miriad of fungi appear, a macro photographers dream.
At Tarkinegrove you are welcome to bring your big toys, your kayaks, boats, bikes. Plenty of flat ground is available next to your cottage.
Tarkinegrove is an easily accessed and perfect central base from which you can explore this preciously wild side of Tasmania.

We wanted to visit the Tarkine and this proved the perfect base. Spacious and cosy with easy to operate wood fire, good kitchen with full size fridge.Lots of thoughtful touches made this a very pleasant stay.

Great place to stay in a peaceful location, very close to the Tarkine drive and its walks. The fireplace and BBQ are great features to make the stay homey and cosy. You’re here to experience life disconnected from urban and online noise.
A home away from home. Cottage had everything you need. Perfect location for touring the Tarkine. We were lucky enough to spot a platypus & a freshwater crayfish in the dam. Highly recommend Tarkine Grove.

Lovely quiet area which is close to all that Tarkine offers. Host is a good source of local knowledge and very responsive to communication.
Property could do with some updates as beds were hard. Cooking pots were worn and bathroom needs attention to detail.
Great hot water and linen
An out of the way country accommodation experience. If you are after a time out from the “rat race” this is the place to go. Surrounded by a garden and farm land. Has all the amenities you need for 1 night or a week. Room for 1 person or 4. Did find you had no phone coverage, which was a plus. No interruptions from the outside world.

Thank you Peter,
You are one of many guests to comment that two or even three nights is not long enough. Also the patchy phone reception (it also depends on you carrier) is to many a big plus. If you come again I will hopefully be mobile and be able to have a yarn with you.
Take care. D&G.
The cottage was cosy and clean with everything we needed. Maybe a fan would be good, hubby runs vey hot and likes a fan when sleeping. On arrival, we did take the wrong driveway and ended up at the hosts house next door. They were very helpful and pointed us in the right direction. Anyone staying here, dont take the driveway that says Tarkinegrove, its the driveway right next to it. Great location for exploring the Tarkine Drive.Beds were comfortable.Very pleasant stay

Thank you for your kind words regarding the cottage and the Tarkine Drive experience which surround us. Thank you too for pointing out the importance of using the Google maps code we send to our guests, the property is known as Tarkinegrove, the code takes you to the cottage driveway rather than the house. There is also a small fan in the second bedroom, a bigger noisier on is available on request.
Very comfortable cottage that had everything you needed including log fire and electric blankets. Close to places of interest along the Tarkine drive and close enough to Tarawuttah Arch to ride our electric bikes.
Clean, comfortable, very inviting, everything we needed for our short stay

Why they chose this property
Tarkinegrove is situated on the South Arthur River Touring Route, C218 at Roger River making it the perfect base to explore this stunning, special, wilderness area.
What makes this property unique
Originally the Gardener's/Caretaker's Cottage, built circa 1910s, for the iconic Mackay timber milling family's 1,000+ acre property it was 'modernised' in the 1950s, relined in either the 1980s or 1990s and updated again before reopening. Their estate left a legacy of four and a half acres of almost botanical gardens that you are free to wander in and enjoy. It is a fully self-contained two bedroom cottage able to accommodate four comfortably with undercover car parking accessed from it's own driveway. Full kitchen facilities with dining area, laundry, family bathroom, lounge with wood fire. Outdoors a BBQ is available for dining on the deck under the great Horse Chestnut tree or sit around the fire pit. Your Cottage has its own private acreage bordered by a grove of giant Macrocarpa. As hosts we respect your privacy, but should you need us or any help please do not hesitate to ask. If you wish to remain contact free there is usually some phone signal around the fire pit and the front of the cottage.
