Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Sofa Bed, 1.5 Bath, Sleeps 6, Walk to Capitol, Mall, Museums

Located in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, this unit features two bedrooms and one bathroom as well as powder room and can comfortably accommodate a family of six. Once you enter the building there are flight of stairs to get to the living and dining room and than another flight of stairs to get to the bedrooms and bathroom.

The property—situated within walking distance of the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall—is near the center of the Federal City and offers amenities for a comfortable and memorable stay in one of Washington's oldest and most sought-after neighborhoods.

After Georgetown to the west, Capitol Hill is Washington's oldest neighborhood. In its earliest days, most of the residents were members of Congress who lived in boarding houses and dormitories surrounding the Capitol. As the neighborhood evolved, rowhouses replaced boarding houses and the Hill began to grow as a neighborhood filled with families, as well as Washington's who's who. As you walk around this stately neighborhood, don't be surprised if you see faces you've seen in the news. A number of senators and representatives make their home on the Hill.

In addition to the U.S. Capitol, the Hill includes other significant American landmarks such as the U.S. Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Union Station, the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks, the Washington Naval Yard, Congressional Cemetery, Lincoln Park, and the Eastern Market. All of these sights are within easy walking distance and most are Metro-accessible on the Orange/Blue line on the southwest side of the Hill and on the Red line through Union Station. Just down the hill from the Capitol is the National Mall with all of the monuments and memorials iconic to Washington, as well as more than 10 museums and galleries of art and artifacts.

To the east of the Capitol is the Eastern Market—one of the only remaining merchant markets left in Washington. While the market bustles during the week, it is on the weekends that it acquires its character and charm as residents from all over the city and visitors from all over the world come to the market to enjoy breakfast; purchase fresh meats, produce, and breads; stroll through the adjacent flea market; and browse the latest art and jewelry crafted by local artists and artisans.

During the spring and summer months, a visit to the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks at 8th and I Streets SE will allow you to see the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team in action. This 24-man rifle platoon performs precision maneuvers with their 10.5 lb M-1 Garand rifles with fixed bayonets.

Over at the U.S. Capitol, the newly opened visitor's center allows visitors to experience the Capitol from the ground up. The center features several state statues in Emancipation Hall and a museum that chronicles the history of the U.S. Capitol from its cornerstone laying in 1789 by George Washington to the present day. Tickets for the Senate and House galleries are available here.

The Library of Congress' Jefferson Building, just across the street from the Capitol, is the world's largest repository of books and media in the world. The building is open to the public and the Renaissance and classical art are breathtaking.

These and other sites make staying on Capitol Hill a must if you're visiting Washington on business or for pleasure.

comfortable place in a quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this place as a respite from all our site seeing. Would definitely stay again!

A few things you should know ahead of time:

-There are steep narrow stairs from the lobby to the main area and some more steep narrow stairs from the living room to the bedrooms. This is not friendly for people with difficulty walking or achy knees. This was not an issue for us.

-The 2 closest Metro stops are almost a mile away (0.9 mi to Union Station and 0.7 mi to Eastern Market). There is a bus stop a half block away and a Capitol bikeshare station 1 block away. We took the bus a lot of the time, rented a bike one day (middle of heat wave, otherwise would have biked more), and took Uber a few times.

-The nearest major grocery store is Safeway, about 1 mile away. The closer corner markets are more like liquor stores. We walked to Safeway, then Ubered back with our groceries.

- There is a little side table with a container of some guides/maps in the hallway between the living room and dining table. In the container were some Metro SmartTrip cards. Fill one up with a few dollars at the Metro station, then use the card for the bus. With the card, transfers are free from the bus to the DC Circulator which goes around the Mall. If you use the card to pay for a $1 DC Circulator ride, you can hop on and off for free for the 2 hours after. There were also passes to congressional sessions in the container. Congress was not in session when we were there, so we couldn't use them. No guarantees that any of this will still be there for your stay.

-This building is over 100 years old, so it has character. The stairs are a little creaky and the floors show their use, but the place is clean and comfortable. The thermostat is set at a comfortable temperature.

-The kitchen is stocked with basics

-You need to bring your own body soap, shampoo and conditioner.

-There is a very nice washer/dryer, but you may need to buy detergent if there isn't any left by prior tenants.

It was a very enjoyable stay, and Ed was very responsive to questions and needs. Next time we're in DC, I would definitely look into renting this place again!

We loved our home to come back to at the end of each day during our 5 day stay!

  • 5 of 5

We brought our 2 teens to DC for the first time and all loved this VRBO. The neighborhood was perfect, We loved walking to 8th street for restaurants, cafes, Eastern market & picking up our Capitol Bikeshare (get the app) bikes to ride to the monuments and museums. We had plenty of room in this beautiful old home. WiFi was excellent. Having a washer and dryer was great. Kitchen was well stocked and lovely as were the dining room and living room. The water pressure was great too. The beds were very comfortable with plenty of extra towels and linens. Having Netflix was a plus for movies at the end of the day. Lyft or Uber were so easy to and from this location. Yes the stairs are steep and narrow so if you need assistance or have very large bags this might not be for you. Otherwise we highly recommend and would love to come back. Thank you Ed for excellent communication and help as needed!

Great Home

  • 5 of 5

Perfect location in a quiet, safe neighborhood. Ed was wonderful and patient with all my questions. The house was nicely decorated with plenty of room for the 4 of us. The patio and courtyard area were perfect to unwind after a long day. The kitchen and washer/dryer were great to have. Uber was usually only 3 to 5 minutes away. There is a small market a few blocks away that has everything. I would note that although we had no issues, the steps are steep and there are no tvs is the bedrooms. It was great to have a private parking space. Overall it was great and I would definitely stay again if I ever get the chance to return to DC. Thank you Ed for allowing us the use of your beautiful home.

Ideal Location

The townhouse was just blocks from the metro and the Capitol building. The house came with many amenities such as a well stocked kitchen, cable TV, excellent WiFi, and a great parking space off of the street. It made our vacation fun and stress free. I would highly recommend it.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

Nice and very clean. The kitchen was nice but not well equipped with utensils and pans. Unfortunately, the ice maker wasnt working during our stay, also no ice cube trays, which may sound nit picky but was an inconvenience for cocktails .AC was great in the warm weather. Ed was responsive and pleasant.
