The ultimate location for Sullivan Shenanigans 2017!

  • 5 of 5

Could not have enjoyed a more perfect stay. These properties are beautifully maintained in an ideal location and the owners could not be more accommodating. From start to finish, our stay was stellar. We had just about twenty for a family reunion and everyone left feeling happy & as comfortable as if they were in their own home. A huge thanks to the Erlers!!!

very nice place

  • 4 of 5

I organized a reunion there in September and most of the people were pleased with the location and the stay. I personally have to thank Jim for accommodating our special requests.

Here are some small complaints I've got from my friends:

- the smell in the main house basement bedroom was a bit modish, nobody wanted to sleep there

- there is no propane barbecue, you have to get you own coal/wood; it takes a long time to prepare and not very reliable, especially for 16 guests

Lovely Place for a Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 13 stayed here, 5 in the cottage and 8 in the house. Both facilities were comfortable and well equipped. The views were spectacular, and the dock was great for docking our boat, swimming from and just hanging out. The whole family enjoyed our stay immensely, and we will definitely consider going back for another vacation..

Family reunion July 2017

  • 4 of 5

We rented the main house, cedar cabin, and 2 cottages. We had a mixed group of infants, kids, teenagers and adults. The properties were well maintained and accommodating for our group. The kitchen was well stocked with everything needed for cooking. It was nice having the second refrigerator in the main house for overflow food. Nice decks/docks at all properties. We did the linen service and it was adequate other than no kitchen towels/dish cloths were provided. The main house had large bedrooms, with the cedar cabin and cottages having smaller rooms. The beds could use and upgrade in the cottages. We would stay there again.

Main House and Cedar Cabin

  • 3 of 5

Main House was overall fine. That said :

It seemed as if the AC would not go as low as we set the thermostat. Also -- for the price paid - one would think more comfortable deck furniture would be provided ( cushions etc)

Cedar Cabin had a great view and a good feel -- " cabin in the woods".

That said:

Stairs need to be built down to lake from this cottage.

With only one bathroom -- it was a challenge with 5 people.

Lighting in bedrooms - especially the Master was way too dim and the master was cramped for space.

Master bed was not as comfortable ( firm ) as one would expect for the price.

Deck furniture was wanting -- no cushions for chairs -- not very inviting.

We enjoyed our annual family vacation as my 51 year old son said.." This was our best ever!".

  • 5 of 5

We all loved the view, the quiet and convenient location. My nine grandchildren, ranging in age from 11 to 22, enjoyed the two docks which allowed fishing and swimming and all enjoyed the two hot tubs. The owner was very responsive to our needs and made every effort to accommodate us. . We are already talking about a mini-family reunion with my siblings.

About Jim Erler, Manager LakeAway Vacation Rentals

Jim is an engineer/entrepreneur who, in addition to running Silver Bay, designs Arts & Crafts homes and advises emerging technology companies.

Catriona is a garden author/photographer/ speaker who has written 9 books and countless articles for national and international publications. See her articles in the Smith Mountain Lake Magazine (free at local businesses).

Jim Erler, Manager LakeAway Vacation Rentals purchased this estate in 2002

Why Jim Erler, Manager LakeAway Vacation Rentals chose Huddleston

When the Point became available in 2002, Jim and Catriona purchased them and began major rennovations to prepare them for large reunions. Since 2003 Silver Bay has been a first choice on Smith Mountain Lake for reunions.

With the lake becoming a year-round destination there was a growing demand for hot tubs. So, in the spring of 2012 the Erlers undertook a major renovation project where hot tubs were added to both houses, and all the properties were updated with new HDTVs and furnishings.

What makes this estate unique

The houses on the Point enjoy the finest views of the Silver Bay rental properties, and one of the finest vistas at Smith Mountain Lake. It is also the largest of the properties, capable of accommodating up to 16 overnight guests.

There is nothing more enjoyable than to stretch out on the dock with a good book, and then dive into the clear, warm water for a refreshing swim. The lake is one of the cleanest in the East Coast, and as you swim or relax, you are looking across to undeveloped wilderness.

Fishing opportunities at Silver Bay View Cottages are unbelievable. The properties are located on Witcher Creek where the stripers spawn every spring. The lake is regularly stocked with game fish, and contains striped bass, large and small mouth bass, muskies, northern pike, and an assortment of small game fish. Fishing guides are available to introduce you to the lake. See our web site for recommended guides.

There may be no better lake in the Mid-Atlantic region for boating. The 20,000 acres of Smith Mountain Lake and its 40-mile length make it a perfect place for water skiing, speed boating, canoeing, kayaking or sailing. Power boats and waverunners can be rented at several locations on the lake. See our web site for nearby marinas.

Very young children enjoy going to the sandy beach at Smith Mountain Lake State Park, which is about 10 minutes away from Silver Bay View Cottages. The park imported tons of white sand to create a lovely beach and protected swimming area that is also monitored by life guards. Be sure and bring sun screen and an umbrella to protect you from the sun. There is also a well equipped playground adjacent to the beach.

Older children enjoy 'Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn' experiences along the shoreline. Catching bait fish with a bare number 16 hook provides endless entertainment, as does catching craw dads, and fighting imaginary dragons! A boat trip to one of the islands is always a treat. After everyone has had a chance to explore every corner of one of these tiny islands, build a campfire and roast hot dogs on a stick followed by s'mores. There are campfire rings on most of the islands, as well as ample fallen wood. Just bring newspaper, matches and a pocket knife (to whittle your own hot dog and marshmallow stick) and have your own 'Huck Finn' adventure!

Nearby and along the shore of Smith Mountain Lake there are lots of interesting places to visit and things to do. You can hike along the shore at the State Park, take a cruise on the lake, tour the Visitor Center at Smith Mountain Dam, see a movie at a drive-in or indoor theater, or enjoy browsing through the many art galleries and shops in the area. The lake area is also well known for the golf courses here, as well as the hunting opportunities.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park

Only 15 minutes from Silver Bay, is Smith Mountain Lake State Park. With its 500’ wide sandy beach, it is a great place for young children to wade into the water. There are 13 hiking trails that meander through the park’s various features, including hardwood forests, pine forests, secluded coves and picturesque vistas.

Enjoy a Sightseen Cruise

Silver Bay Views is a beautiful corner of the lake, but there is much more to see. If you aren’t able to get out on the water on your own, a sightseeing tour on the Virginia Dare is a great option. Their dock is only 15 minutes from Silver Bay.

Visit Smith Mountain Dam

The Visitor’s Center at Smith Mountain is open to the public with a view overlooking the dam. Exhibits tell the history of the dam and how power is generated at the unique two-lake complex. Adults and children of all ages are fascinated by how energy is stored in Smith Mountain Lake, and its’ important role in the national power grid.

Camping and Picnicking

Smith Mountain Lake is full of islands that are ideal for camping and picnicking. One of our favorite activities is to build a campfire on one of the many inlets along Smith Mountain and cook hot dogs and marshmallows for lunch. Swimming in these pristine, mountain inlets is also a memorable experience.

There are several golf courses, both public and private, in the vicinity of Smith Mountain Lake. Course open to the public include Mariner's Landing Mariner's Landing (15 minutes from Silver Bay) and Westlake Golf & Country Club Westlake Golf & Country Club (35 minutes from Silver Bay).
