## Emplacement
In the mid-19th century, Cabourg, in the Calvados region, was a simple fishing and farming village. A visionary project by Parisian businessman Henri Durand-Morimbau transformed it into a popular seaside resort. The Caen architect he commissioned, Paul Leroux, designed a town layout in the shape of a Greco-Roman theater. Inaugurated in 1855, the resort rapidly expanded, buoyed by the fashion for sea bathing and boosted by the creation of the Société des Bains de Mer (Sea Bathing Society) to welcome curists and vacationers.
Wealthy buyers and well-known personalities purchased superb villas, which can still be admired today. The Casino de Cabourg, delightfully old-fashioned, retains all the cachet of the 1900s. Facing the sea, the mythical Grand Hôtel, made famous by Marcel Proust, who used to stay here and booked a room here between 1907 and 1914, exudes a charming old-French atmosphere.
Overlooking one of Normandy's most beautiful beaches, which stretches for four kilometers, the Marcel Proust pedestrian promenade unveils the town's Belle Époque architectural universe. Admire the beautiful residences and the many flowerbeds. Cabourg is also a "flower resort", with a double classification and a wealth of parks and gardens. The town's floral expertise is showcased every spring during the Garden in Bloom weekend.
