Note: this review is for a 12-night stay. We were upgraded out of this room so will speak more to the overall property and experience.
When we booked there were no reviews and relatively little about the property, as the new owners are getting things going. While there were a couple of glitches based on them building up their systems, they quickly worked to make things right and overall we are happy we took the leap of faith and had a great stay.
Overall context – this listing is one unit of 4 in Sweet Water Reef Resort, now with its own website. The resort is a relatively small rectangular property – from the road there’s a bar/restaurant, then a short walk to the 2 rainforest units, the owners’ house, then the 2 reef units, and the Caribbean with the resort pier and small beach. The pictures were accurate. Definitely do your research on the north part of Ambergris Caye in terms of advantages and disadvantages. We loved the laid-back quiet aspects.
The owners checked in with us often and were quite hospitable, lending us snorkel fins and helping us plan other aspects of our visit. Their staff were superb, especially Daniela at the bar/restaurant.
The rooms are well built and comfortable. The rainforest units get less breeze, a bit more bugs outside, and a bit more noise from the bar (which ends at a reasonable hour), but have the nice screened area for chilling plus the four units share some nice water-side chaise chairs and chairs/hammock chair on the dock. The unit fridge, microwave and kettle worked great and helped us offset costs by having daily coffee and some of our meals and snacks there. We ate at Portofino Resort next door for a lot of breakfasts and holiday dinners, and the other bar/pizza spot on the other side was nice too, but because the onsite food was great and prices quite we ended up with a lot of meals and happy hours at Sweet Water and didn’t have to bump along the road elsewhere. If we went back for several days we might not bother renting a golf cart – you can do snorkel and sail expeditions getting picked up from their dock, take the resort’s kayaks or SUPs out, relax, and have several options for dining and have a great stay without missing out. Recommend!
