About this property

The Hideaway. A year-round private, secluded, quiet lake cabin on 25 acres.

Thank you for your interest in The Hideaway on Wasson Lake. A full description of the cabin is below and all amenities are detailed on this site. (If The Hideaway is not available on your dates, we invite you to check out “The Getaway” cabin on adjacent White Swan Lake (see Property ID 2861714). Available to rent starting August 2022, it also provides privacy, offers similar amenities, and applies the same high cleanliness standards as The Hideaway).

The Hideaway is a year-round lake cabin with knotty pine tongue and groove interior throughout on 25 acres of Minnesota woods and 600 feet of lake frontage, with about 50 feet of solid bottom at the dock area. Perfect for families, couples, honeymooners, girls/guys weekends, fishing/hunting groups, snowmobilers, groups of friends, a place for families to stay for out-of-town events or tournaments, etc, at any time of the year.

MAIN LEVEL: The main level has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a full kitchen, a dining area with oak table and seating for 6, a living room with a couch, loveseat, lounge chair, rocking chair and wood-burning stove, and two sets of double doors that open to a fully screened-in porch with additional table and chairs for 4 for outdoor dining. All kitchen utensils, linens and cooking/baking supplies are provided and there is also a high chair and booster seat available.

LOWER LEVEL: The lower level has 1 additional bathroom, a dining/gaming table with 4 chairs, another living room with a flat-screen TV, another pair of double-doors that open to an outdoor patio, and a utility room with washer and dryer for laundry and plenty of storage for outdoor items and clothing, including snowmobiling gear.

BEDROOMS: There are 3 bedrooms, each that sleep 2, plus comfortable sleeping arrangements for 3 additional guests downstairs - 2 on a double size futon-style couch and 1 on a single-size rollaway bed. There is also a Graco brand pack-n-play portable crib for a small child/infant. All bedroom linens (sheets, blankets, pillows, etc.) are provided, plus an extra set of linens for each bed.

LAKESIDE: “The Hideaway” has a separate area just a few hundred feet from the cabin that has a private dock, fully screened-in gazebo with electricity, table and 6 chairs, fish cleaning table, many life jackets, unlimited use of a 14' Lund fishing boat/Honda 9HP motor (includes 1 full tank of gas), a 17' Grumman aluminum canoe, and a 2-person paddle boat. Wasson Lake does not have a public access, and there is also no access point on the property to launch a watercraft. So unfortunately guests are unable to launch and use their own boats. As seen in the pictures, the lakeshore at the dock area is about 2-3 feet deep. It is firm enough and mostly clear of weeds and lilly pads for swimming, wading, etc. However, it is not all sand, so although people can and do swim and wade in the water at the dock area, it is not ideal or perfect as your feet do sink a few inches into the mixture of sand, silt and mud. A better swimming alternative is from the pontoon boat, if that is rented. See info below.

Guests may bring their own life jackets, but the following are the number and sizes of life jackets on hand at The Hideaway for guests to use:
- 1 infant
- 2 child
- 2 youth
- 8 adult of various sizes

PONTOON (OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL RENTAL):
We are pleased to announce that in June 2022, we upgraded and purchased a brand new 2022 Godfrey pontoon with 40hp 4-stroke motor. If rented, invoicing would be done separately via email and Square. If interested in this additional rental, please let us know as we can provide pricing and other information.

PETS: Dogs only, and max of 2. Additional fee of $50/stay, regardless of 1 or 2 dogs, which would be invoiced separately to guests after booking is completed. For guests’ convenience, we provide feeding dishes, a scooper and bags.

FISHING: Wasson Lake is approximately 500 acres in size and spring fed. Per the MN DNR site it has 17 feet of clarity with a maximum depth of 67 feet. With 4 islands and numerous bays, it provides for an ideal fish habitat. The lake has northern pike, perch, large and small mouth bass, rock bass, crappies, and other panfish like bluegill and sunfish. The nearby Scenic Pines Store just 2 miles away sells bait and tackle as well as gas if you need to purchase more.

HUNTING: We do not allow hunting on the 25-acre property itself. The use of guns of any kind, including but not limited to BB guns, bow and arrows, sling shots, cross bows, etc. are strictly prohibited. However, hunting groups are welcome as there are thousands of acres of huntable government, public land all over the area. Here are some websites with some area hunting and fishing information:
http://www.visitgrandrapids.com/things-to-do/hunting/
http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/hunting/tips/locations.html

SNOWMOBILING/ATV: Snowmobilers & ATV riders are welcome !!! In the wintertime, enjoy exploring the hundreds of miles snowmobile trails that Itasca County and norther MN has to offer. An extension to the nearby groomed Herb Brandstrom Trail was just added a couple years ago and practically goes right to the cabin as it's just a few hundred feet from the driveway. The local Swampsiders Snowmobile Club is also just 3 miles down the road. See the following Itasca County Snowmobiling site for more information and maps:
https://www.co.itasca.mn.us/279/Snowmobile-Trails
See also this website for area ATV trail information:
http://www.co.itasca.mn.us/795/ATV-Trails-In-Itasca-County

25-ACRES: Much of the forest around Wasson Lake is second and third growth and is very old and dying. Thus, a few years ago the previous owners underwent an overdue project of forest stewardship by selectively harvesting overgrown poplar, birch and aspen trees while planting over 4,000 new red pine, white pine and various types of hardwoods. So within a few short years, we will start to see a beautiful new forest begin to emerge. In fact, the pine trees are already getting to 4-6 feet tall. The property is bordered by the lake to east, another cabin to the south, and roads to the west and north, so we invite you to take a peaceful walk in the woods or down the driveway and road and take in all the peace, quiet, beauty and tranquility the property and surrounding area has to offer. We are working to create a walking trail system through the property. So far, we have created a few trails totaling a few hundred yards with more planned. So we invite guests to enjoy these trails and explore the property during their stays.

The exterior yard of the cabin has a fire pit. Campfires are allowed as long as there are no burning bans in place. A fully stocked wood pile is provided.

NOTE: Included in the rental rate is a 3% lodging tax paid to the non-profit organization Visit Grand Rapids (www.VisitGrandRapids.com) whose mission is to promote the Itasca County/Grand Rapids area as a destination for conferences, conventions, events, group tours and leisure travelers, thereby enhancing the economic growth of the area through travel and tourism. We (the owners) support this non-profit and their goals and mission, and thus have chosen to pay this tax voluntary out of pocket from rentals received. Guests will not see this additional tax added to their reservations nor receive an extra charge from us.

Beautiful and Peaceful Hideaway
We spent a week at this picturesque, very clean and well-appointed cabin. There were swans and other migrating birds on the lake, which is a short walk from the house. Our hosts, the Solbergs, were great. They were informative and promptly responded to any questions. They ensured a lovely "home away from home"...the kitchen was one of the cleanest and most organized of any of the cabins we've stayed. And, they've created lovely walking paths on their property. We had a perfect stay!

Staycation
We live in Bigfork, so we weren't too far from home (24 miles). We've lived in the area since our youth, so we know the area very well. We know the guy that built the vacation home and have a hunting shack just north a few miles. And yet it was a way to get away with our kids that now live in the cities and spend quality time catching up.

loved everything about the cabin. furnished with everything you could need, except of course fresh f
it was a great property; quiet and well furnished. loved the outdoor firepit; the pontoon (purchased separately); all the amenities (paddle boat, canoe, kayaks, fishing boat). The only thing we did not like was that there was no beach. The water was low and when you stepped in by the dock, it was 6" deep muk.

This is our second time here and we absolutely love it! You know it is a winner when your adult children want to return. It is quiet and peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed the use of the pontoon and kayaks. Hopefully, although we were never up too late, the neighbors at least enjoyed all the laughter ❤️ we will definitely be back

About the host

Hosted by Heather Solberg

Our names are Loren & Joan Solberg. We are both semi-retired and live about 30 miles away from The Hideaway just outside of nearby Grand Rapids, MN. We own "The Hideaway" cabin along with our sons John (& Bobbi) Solberg, who currently reside in Cottage Grove, MN and Sean (& Heather) Solberg, who currently live in Eagan, MN. Both are eastern suburbs of the Twin Cities about 4 hours away. We also have two other adult children, one in Grand Rapids and one in Blaine (also a Twin Cities suburb) who live with their respective families, and between them all they have blessed us with 13 grandchildren!

Why they chose this property

Why this property? That is a great question!
Even though we just purchased this cabin property in early October 2019, we are definitely not new to it. From the early 1970’s until the late 1990’s, we lived in nearby Bovey (about 25 miles away from “The Hideaway” and about 6 miles from Grand Rapids), which is where we raised our four children. We spent most days of every summer at Wasson Lake as a family at our very old and rustic cabin, which is directly next door to the south and actually shares the first part of the driveway with “The Hideaway”.

The previous owners of “The Hideaway” originally purchased it in 1975, built the original cabin in 1977, and extensively remodeled it in 2008. When they moved from Minneapolis, MN to Rochester, NY, in 1989, even though they knew they wouldn't be able to use “The Hideaway” very often, they kept it since it was a very special place to them and knew they could never replace it.

Spending that much time at our respective cabins over the last 5 decades have allowed us and our families to become lifelong friends. So we were deeply saddened when we heard they were going to sell. We just felt so connected to them and the property that we felt we had to try our best to buy it, and we did. It is such a cozy, relaxing place and we are excited to keep it in the family as well as share it with others to enjoy.

What makes this property unique

If you are looking for a fully-equipped, cabin-style retreat on a very quiet lake in the woods that offers privacy, seclusion, peace, connecting with nature, beautiful scenery, relaxation, comfort, plenty of room, and tranquility, yet provides just enough connection to the real world and is within short drives to shopping and many activities, this is the place for you. The lake also offers great fishing with multiple species (there are no walleyes in the lake) but without a lot of lake traffic since there is no public access on the lake and also only one small resort.
