About this property

Ocean View Lodge with Hot Breakfast

Once a church, our log lodge is perched on a knoll on the south shore overlooking Johnstone Strait. The beach is just steps away.

Constructed entirely of cedar, the Great Room (the former worship room) of this magnificent building features vaulted 14” cedar ceilings, four conversation nooks and a dining room with ocean and mountain views. Indigenous art hangs on our walls, and books of many variations grace our library. Outside is a wrap around sundeck. The lodge is the perfect place to take in the ocean, inhale the cedar aroma and loose yourself in the serene vibe of this place.

Room 1 is features one queen bed, a mini fridge, a vanity and sink (located outside the bath) and a full bathroom with a soaker tub and shower.

Guests have access to the Great Room where they can peruse the library, enjoy the multimedia room, cozy up by the fire and connect with fellow travelers. The only TV resides in the Great Room. Our resident managers provide great local knowledge and will welcome you with a tour of the lodge and an introduction to Alert Bay. They'll also take your order for breakfast the next morning.

The lodge is busiest from mid-June to the end of September when orca and grizzly bear viewing is prime. We utilize a variety of operators for our bear tours and whale watching trips, most of whom pick up near the lodge. Please contact us to make sure we find the right tour for you.

Towards late September things start to wind down. There is an out-migration of sorts: the salmon have moved into the streams, the bears retreat to hibernate and the resident orcas head out into the open ocean. Most visitors to the Island follow this cycle.

Others come to enjoy the winter storms, savour the crisp air tinged with cedar and salt and read by the fire. Others simply find solitude in this small community. The U’Mista Culture Centre is open and our few restaurants and pubs keep varying hours.

About the host

Host profile image
After university, Scott left his home town of Victoria, BC and spent several years travelling and working in northern Canada, much of it in remote communities. He then took a year to travel around the world and returned to initially settle in northern BC. After running a health care agency for a dozen years, he became restless again, left his job, and returned to university.

Born in Singapore, Nina immigrated to Canada as a child, and grew up in northern communities. After her travels in Asia Pacific she returned to Canada to take a job as a guide for a large US tour company. Nina worked there for six years, travelling throughout North America while leading tour groups. She then relocated to Yukon Territory, where she worked in the hospitality industry for several years.

The lodge is now staffed by international couples with hospitality and cooking experience and a yearn for nature. We find that the right couple injects an energy and vitality to the lodge, a bonus for our guests who visit Alert Bay.

Why they chose this property

A number of years ago (don’t ask how long ago but was before parenthood) we stayed at a very-hard-to-find beachfront near Santiago de Cuba. The place had four basic rooms and a spectacular view of the ocean – pretty much standard fare in Cuba. But what made this property exceptional was the service. We were not over-served by any stretch – the staff were just there when they needed to be, almost as if they had ESP. A few years later when we saw what is now Alert Bay Lodge for sale in 1999, we knew fortune had smiled on us.

This 3000 sq. ft. building was constructed by First Nations in 1961 as the United Church for the island. Since then the building has had a number of identities. Many renovations later, Alert Bay Lodge is now, we believe, fulfilling its ordained role as an ambassador with local character for people that come from far and wide to visit Alert Bay. And, if we haven't mentioned it before, the ocean and mountain views are stunning!

What makes this property unique

The remote beauty of Alert Bay, the absence of chain stores and the friendly people won us over. We found here a thriving First Nations community, one that adds depth and a proud history to this community.

And, of course we include breakfast! The coffee is on at 6:00 am for guests to help themselves and take their hot drinks back to their room. The manager is a fountain of local knowledge and provides a concierge service.
