About this property
Casa del Carbonaio in Valle d'Itria- MICELE HOLIDAY HOUSES
La Casa del Carbonaio is tucked away in one of the most charming, peaceful, and picturesque alleys of the historic center. This unique home accommodates up to 3 guests and features an alcove bedroom, 2 bathrooms, and a spacious kitchenette.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the house was a working charcoal workshop, producing charcoal from almond husks and small wood scraps. The charcoal was carefully extinguished in special containers called “fucagne” and sold to local residents to fuel their braziers. Later, the house was used to produce lime, which was sold to whitewash the walls of the traditional cummerse in the old town.
Today, it has been lovingly restored into a beautiful home while preserving its historic charm. Original features such as star-shaped and barrel vaults, solid wood furnishings, and the wrought-iron spiral staircase leading from the cellar (once an ancient well and aqueduct) to the kitchen have all been retained, creating a perfect blend of history and comfort.
