House cliff with terrace in Menorca

This charming house is situated in the South East part of Menorca in the tourist village of Cala En Porter with direct and unobstructed views of the sea and the beach. The house literally hangs off the cliffs of this beautiful bay, which protect the beach from the typically strong winds of Menorca.
There are about 750 square feet divided over two floors, with two large bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a patio, living room with open plan kitchen en a vast terrace with panoramic views over the Mediterranean.
Early 2013 this property was completely refurbished to the highest standard in a modern design maintaining the typical Mediterranean style of the island. The beach is directly accessible through a winding staircase down the cliffs, which makes this cosy house ideal for a family beach holiday.
On the top floor the entrance to the house gives direct access to an open air patio with open shower, a door to the fully equipped kitchen and living room and a separate entrance to a large bedroom. The more than 350 square feet terrace with barbecue and lounge chairs is ideal to relax and enjoy the gentle sea breeze.
After descending a short flight of stairs you will find access to the second, very large bedroom with its own private and fully refurbished bathroom. Every window in the house open up to breath-taking views of the sea and beach.
Cala En Porter is a well-kept secret amongst British tourist and offers everything you need for your holiday, such as supermarkets with national and international products, various restaurants serving everything from English breakfast, Italian Pizza, Chinese buffet to the delicious local cuisine of the island. The main attraction of the town however, for which tourists and locals from every part of the island come here almost every day, is La Cova de Xoroi, a cave-bar that offers special daily sessions to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world, a definite must-do and see.
There are also various hiking routes which start at Cala En Porter, such as the famous Cami de Cavalls, which will take you on a 360 º tour around the island.

This detached villa is all about the terrace (not safe for young children) and the truly magnificent view over the beach and cove. The 60 odd steps down to the villa from the archway entrance on the road and the further flight down to the beach are challenging, and not suitable for some seniors and those with mobility issues. The sleeping arrangements are quirky. The main bedroom and modern en-suite are down an external flight of stairs. The second bedroom with 2 x single beds is outside the "dining" room entrance, making supervision by parents of young children impossible. The kitchen is pretty well equipped although the fridge/freezer has seen better days. There was no TV (not a problem for us) and surprisingly no information booklet about appliances, the villa in general or the locality. Communication with Bernard was fine. The view from the terrace is peerless and the villa is very well located. With a little more thought and attention it could be excellent. Not ideal for families (we holidayed without young children) and the steps guarantee a regular workout. We enjoyed our stay but would not return to this particular property.

Beautiful apartment and truly spectacular views!

A truly wonderful experience being able to stay somewhere with such a spectacular view! The apartment was immaculately clean and comfortable, with the only drawback being the stairs leading down to it. However it is well worth the journey up and down the stairs (which were fairly large and spacious), as the view of the cove really is unparalleled! A short walk down to the beach and into town, i cannot recommend enough it enough and would definitely be glad to book the apartment again in the future.

Disappoininting, needs renovating

We have stayed in Cala en Porter many times, and always in houses or apartments on the cliff. We like older style rustic places so don't expect perfect. This is my first negative review. On the contrary we have stayed in some older properties that would not suit other travellers. The location is exceptional. However, most of the house felt abandoned and dilapidated. Bernard the host, was always responsive. The view from the terrace is stunning. But for us it was not fit for occupation. Not at the price being charged. The layout of the house is fragmented but we didn't mind that, and we loved the original features. However, the whole place was damp and felt neglected and dilapidated. There were several problems that meant we only stayed for half of the week and decided to leave and get another house (at our own expense). We had to boil water in a pan on the stove as the kettle was broken. Bernard did send a replacement but not until the 4th day of our stay (he can't help it that Amazon take a bit of time so fair enough, these things happen). Some of the curtain poles weren’t attached properly, and we had to stand on a chair to close/open the curtains in the master bedroom. The under sheets had footprints on them, stains and some seemed dirty. Some of the cushions on the terrace were covered in mould and the beautifully renovated shower room on the lower level with the master bedroom was lovely but the toilet was broken. I reported it immediately, but no one came to fix it. In the night we had to go outside of the bedroom, up the stairs at the side of the house (under the night stars) and into the other bathroom that was filthy with damp and mould. The bathroom upstairs is disgusting. Other people have reported the state of this bathroom. It’s one of the worst I have ever seen – save for the gorgeous yellow art deco lamp fitting. Some of the electrical wiring in the house worried us as well, and all in all we decided we could not stay for the full week. Leaving early was our choice but given the state of the place I asked for a refund for the three nights we didn’t stay – we felt that was fair. We were refused. And while no terms and conditions were broken, if this were my house I could not, in all good conscience, charge the amount of money we paid for it. So, I am afraid we won’t be going back unless the house is renovated which Bernard said would be happening. Such a shame but we cannot recommend this place.

Hi Lisa, Thanks for your comment although it takes a lot of complaining. If I have to add anything to it, it's complicated to get a fast plumbing repair service on this island, it's wonderful but sometimes certain things don't go as quickly as we would like, including the Mega Giant Amazon not serving in less than 24h like in London (for example). We have to live with that. I take this comment also to encourage people to book for next year, as we have good news that the house will have a major refurbishment to welcome everyone in better conditions, we would have done it sooner if this bug had not appeared and done so much damage to everyone's health and life and also let's not forget, to the income that allows us to do these jobs that Lisa has missed so much. I reiterate my apologies for the inconvenience!

Let me start by saying that the view is spectacular. But if you are looking for luxury, this is not the place for you. The house is located about halfway down a large hillside of houses. If you have any mobility issues or anything remotely resembling heavy luggage, get ready for a workout going down and especially back up. If it’s hot- prepare to sweat. The house setup is not conventional with each bedroom being on a different level and accessed by outdoor stairs. It felt like I was at camp having to go outside and upstairs to go to the kitchen. There was a consistently musty odor in the kitchen although it was pretty well stocked with the exception of potholders. We were battling with ants in the kitchen constantly. To be fair, we did not reach out to the owners about the ants; what can really be done about an ant problem in just a few days time? There is no AC, but there are fans and a decent breeze which was ok. We tried to use the clothes washer, but it seemed to get stuck in some kind of mode that we were not able to get it out of in order to have a complete wash cycle. The front loading washer rubber ring needed disinfecting because it left our clothes smelling musty and despite air drying outdoors ( there is no dryer) we had to rewash them at our next location.

Dear Ms. Rhodes, thank you for your review. Sorry, that you did not enjoy the house 100%. However, most of the points you mentioned actually align with our description of the property. I visited the house myself after your stay and can confirm the presence of ants; unfortunately, they always seem to find a way into the kitchen, though they are only small and not present in large numbers. The odor you noticed originated from the houses above us, but the issue has since been resolved. I have used the washing machine myself several times; the laundry always comes out clean and smells fresh. Moritz Schwarz

Der Ausblick vom Haus auf die Bucht mit ihrem türkisfarbenem Wasser ist nur schwer zu toppen. Man ist ruckzuck unten am Strand. Ein paar schöne Restaurants und Bars sowie kleinere Supermärkte sind ebenfalls fußläufig erreichbar. Mit dem Haus und dem Ort Cala en Porter haben wir eine sehr gute Wahl getroffen.

10/10 ExcellentSuperbe séjour dans cette Très jolie maison atypique sur 2 étages est hyper propre à flan de falaise (65 marches pour y accéder), cela se mérite. Pas forcement adapté avec de jeunes enfants ou personnes ayant des difficultés à se déplacer, très bien équipée avec une grande terrasse à la vue époustouflante sur petite crique. Plage accessible par un escalier (144 marches). Commerces et restaurants à proximité. .Bernard est très réactif et répond rapidement aux sollicitations. Die Lage direkt am Meer ist ein Traum, von der Terasse hat man einen schönen Blick auf die Bucht und den Strand. Sehr malerisch und toll zum entspannen. Mitte Oktober konnte man schön den ganzen Tag auf der Terasse in der Sonne liegen, nachmittags wurde es oft zu warm, dann war das Meer eine schöne Abkühlung. In der ersten Woche unseres Urlaubs (13.-19.10.2025) war auch noch ein Bootsverleih am Strand und das Wasser war toll zum Schnorcheln. Mit dem Kajak kann man in 2h die Küste entlang zu einer Höhle und einer Bucht fahren an denen es sehr viele Fische gibt. Besonders in der Höhle sollte man schnorcheln, die Sonnenstrahlen und Fischschwärme sind wunderschön.Ende Oktober war das Meer durch den Südwind in der Bucht rauer und es gab keinen Bootsverleih mehr. Schnorcheln ging aufgrund der Wellen nicht mehr, aber auf der Nordseite der Insel, bei Platja del Grau und Cala Pregonda haben wir noch tolle ruhige Buchten mit vielen Fischen gefunden.Etwas gestört haben mich die vielen Mücken, die mich wirklich gerne gegessen haben. Aber es gab Mückennetze für jedes Bett und reichlich Mückenzeug im Supermarkt. Die Matratze im Doppelbett fand ich nicht so angenehm für meinen Rücken, sie ist schon etwas durchgelegen und könnte mal getauscht werden. Mein Partner hatte allerdings keine Probleme. Insgesamt vor allem aufgrund der tollen Lage sehr zu empfehlen.
