We have just returned from a fantastic fortnight at South Point Cottage. The cottage is on Koggala Lake. It is a 3 bedroom property (2 with fans, one with a/c). We travelled as a couple, so only used one room. We were met at our taxi, as you cannot drive up to cottage; it is a short walk- 2 mins max. Then you descend into paradise. The cottage is set in its own grounds, with a swimming pool, and a jetty.Loads of natural wood has been used throughout the cottage and terrace, it gives a lovely feel to the place. The bathroom is huge and has a rainfall shower, bliss.
The garden is well tended but natural which means lots of interesting wildlife paying a visit.
The biggest asset this place has is the staff. They make you feel so special. We had some fantastic conversations even with the language differences; we even had pictures of all the wildlife drawn for us! They made our last night so good with a guitarist playing and singing western and Sri Lankan songs.
Some of the highlights included:
Fishing from the jetty at dusk. Memorable.
Boat trip round the lake including Bat Island and a visit to a cinnamon stick maker.
Discovering all the wildlife.
The sleep. I have never slept so well, or so deeply.
Eating fresh coconuts, watching a man climb the incredibly tall trees with just a tiny rope for assistance.
The food, the chef is brilliant. Use the suggested menu as a guide, and leave it to him, we did not have any food that was less than great. Deep fried ice cream is a revelation!
Having a lovely safe driver, makes a real difference in SL.
Watching the local fishermen in their canoes, and buying a crab from one, and having it cooked for us.
Watching the seaplane take off every day. We used this to fly back to CMB as we could not face the long drive back pre long haul flight. It is around £40 per person, would recommend.
The cottage is in a small village, next to a Buddhist temple, with a small school. You really are off the beaten track; however you are well placed for exploring Galle Matara, Mirissa, tea plantation etc.
We spent so many happy days at this cottage, some days not leaving the grounds, it is so tranquil.
The South Point People also run an education building in the village, we had some lovely outfits made by the ladies there, very reasonable prices – (tip-take an item of clothing as a pattern).
Ayurvedic massages at the cottage, they were so relaxing.
I recommend this place to get away from it all, hope to return soon.
