## Neighborhood

Elephant & Castle

Located just south of Waterloo, Elephant and Castle is one of those rare London areas which boasts a central location and excellent transport links, but has suffered a long reputation of being somewhere to avoid unless utterly necessary. That is, until now. Around £3 billion has been invested in the ‘The Elephant’ over the last decade, in the form of tearing down old estates, improving the roundabouts, and building award-winning modern housing developments that are rapidly catching the eye of design-focused Londoners looking for a contemporary, aesthetically pleasing pad. Apart from improving the aesthetics, these changes have also arguably brought a vibrant new energy to the area. Formerly occupied by swathes of students, a new wave of young Londoners who might previously have chosen East or North London are now descending on Elephant and Castle, bringing a creative energy and new independent businesses with them such as those found in The Artworks hub (think yoga studios, Mauritian cafes, and vintage clothes shops). It’s rapidly becoming one of South London’s hottest places to live!

Borough

In the heart of Southwark, minutes from London Bridge station and Tower Bridge, Borough embodies central London living at its best. The area gets its name from a time when it was the only borough outside the City of London. Beyond the jurisdiction of the City authorities, in the 16th and 17th centuries the area was a playground famed for its inns, theatres and the notorious Southwark Fair which was shut down in 1762 after being deemed too debauched. It retains enormous character in many of its buildings, streets and shops, and a great mix of cultural opportunities remain. There are famous theatres, you’re never more than a brisk walk away from wonderful pubs dating back to medieval times, and it’s home to Borough Market, the Tate Modern and Europe’s tallest building, The Shard. The added appeal of Borough to those living or working in the area is the proximity to London Bridge and Waterloo. The area has a diverse population, with a large creative community, City workers and long time residents all coexisting, attracted by the wide range of properties available. Borough thrives as a riverside location that mixes tourist attractions and dramatic new architecture, and that can lay claim to being one of the city’s most exciting places to live.
Culture: The area is home to the best theatre in London outside the West End. Shakespeare’s Globe, the Young Vic and Old Vic all have deservedly excellent reputations, but worth a special mention is the Menier Chocolate Factory for its offbeat productions and restaurant. Film buffs’ favourite BFI Southbank is within walking distance. The Jerwood Space is a gallery and rehearsal space that’s open daily and showcases new artists.
Eating and drinking: If you need a coffee to help you around Borough Market, caffeine junkies sing the praises of Monmouth Coffee, while lunchtime treats might include a chorizo roll from Spanish supplier Brindisa or hand dived scallops and bacon from seafood shack Shellseekers. Popular bars and restaurants cluster around the market, such as Roast Restaurant and The Market Porter, famous for their striking hanging baskets and crowds of punters soaking up the market atmosphere. For a fabulous panoramic view of London, head up The Shard to Hutong, Oblix or Aqua Shard . Flat Iron Square comprises seven railway arches and Grade II listed building Devonshire House, with seven food vendors, three restaurants, four street food trucks, five bars and a live music and entertainment venue. Mercato Metropolitan is a new Italian market that has been designed to look like the huge food halls in Turin and Milan — with a more funky, industrial feel — and is packed with regional Italian foods made by artisan producers on site.

## Transit

On the Northern line Tube with trains to the City, Elephant & Castle is the last stop on the Bakerloo line, so there is always a seat in the morning rush hour to the West End. The train station has Thameslink services to Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Pancras.

Elephant & Castle has a large concentration of London bus routes — there are 29 services, including to King’s Cross, Liverpool Street, Shoreditch, Tottenham Court Road, Holborn and Oxford Circus.

Tube: Borough Tube station is on the Northern line in Zone 1. London Bridge and Elephant & Castle tube stations are nearby and offer access to the Bakerloo line, the Jubilee line and the Waterloo & City line.
Rail: Borough residents benefit from easy access to two of London’s major railway intersections, London Bridge and Waterloo.
Bus: It is possible to travel to almost every corner of London by bus from Borough. The 40 (to Dulwich), 35 (to Clapham or Shoreditch) and C10 (to Victoria) all run regular services throughout the day. Several night buses also pass through Borough.
Cycle: There are Boris bike docking stations on Southwark Street and Park Street.
River: Half hourly river boat services run to Canary Wharf and Greenwich from London Bridge pier.

Grubby
Great location but the property itself is grubby. Stains on sheets and towels, dead fly in the fridge, unsanitary trash on the floor. No instructions/ trash bags for recycling. Very disappointed - would not recommend this property to anybody.

Dirty, Bugs, No heat.
When we entered the house, it looked like no one had stayed there for months. They had shut down all the heaters and even turned the boiler off. At night it was getting frigid and no one was helpful. We were told to move the thermostat for hours until we finally realized that they had turned the boiler off and sealed all the heaters off. In addition, there were ants crawling from the bathroom closet. We were greeted with mosquitos and flys in the room. There were stains on the bath towels, and one bedroom did not had shades and of course the sun shines directly in during the morning. Overall this was a disgusting place to stay and would never recommend it.
