Gonars is known for the historical artefacts from the Roman, Lombard, and Frankish periods that have been discovered in the area, particularly in the countryside between Fauglis and Gonars. Be sure to visit the Corno River Park, which features a bike path equipped with benches for resting and educational panels.
Within the city limits, you can visit the site of a former concentration camp, which operated from the spring of 1942 until September 8, 1943, where several hundred Slovenian and Croatian civilians—deported during the Italian occupation of Yugoslavia—were interned.
In addition, the star-shaped city of Palmanova is just a 12-minute drive away. It is so named for its 9-pointed star-shaped layout, or “fortress city,” due to the many fortifications located within its boundaries. Since 1960, the historic city has been a national monument, and on July 9, 2017, the Palmanova Fortress was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The city of Palmanova can be considered an open-air museum: the entire city bears witness to the military importance it held in the past. Among the monuments worth visiting are:
- The city’s entrance gates (Porta Udine, Porta Aquileia or Marittima, Porta Cividale), the only buildings visible from outside the fortress that still partially retain their original architectural features.
- The city walls
- Piazza Grande, Palmanova’s main urban square, perfectly hexagonal in shape, onto which the city’s most important buildings face;
- The Cathedral, built in 1600;
- The City’s Civic and Historical Museum: an important resource not only for information about the fortress city but also for events and suggested itineraries in the surrounding area and throughout the region;
- The Military History Museum, which houses collections of documents on the fortifications, weapons, and uniforms of the various armies and garrisons that have been stationed in the fortress over time.
Main distances:
- Palmanova Toll Plaza, Vicolo Taglio: 11 minutes by car;
