About this property

Adventure Awaits at this Lakeside Retreat, #9 Rocky Lake North!

Long, warm, sunny days amidst the unspoiled solace of the Canadian North can be yours to enjoy at this comfortable getaway on Rocky Lake, Manitoba.
Located 30 minutes drive north of The Pas Manitoba or 25 minutes drive from The Pas airport (with connections to Winnipeg), roads are good quality highway with a short 3 km (2 mile) limestone gravel section at the very end to bring you to your home away from home.
Located on the limestone portion of the Canadian Shield, Rocky Lake has many miles of uniquely beautiful shoreline, nearly a dozen small uninhabited islands, and some 26,000 acres of clean, clear, pristine waters. While it has no sandy beaches (it comes by its name honestly) it has few underwater reefs that pose boating hazards. With a few minutes instruction and a good lake map to reference (supplied) it becomes one of the safest lakes in the area to explore by boat. You can look forward to days spent suntanning, water skiing, tubing, hiking, canoeing/kayaking/paddle-boarding, swimming, snorkelling, and of course...FISHING!
Fishing season opens on the 3rd weekend in May and early season success can be guaranteed! Fishing in home bay, right off the dock has produced picture worthy "keepers" from at least 3 different species. Rocky Lake has a vibrant fishery for Northern Pike, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Cisco ( the Manitoba record being caught in Rocky Lake at 23.5"), and Whitefish. Nearby Barbe Lake (15 minutes drive) holds the Manitoba record for Brook (Speckled) Trout, and the adjacent Clearwater Lake (25 minutes drive) is not only a destination that should be seen for its beauty, but also has a renowned Lake Trout fishery. Check out the unique aspects of Manitoba's Master Angler program (and note Rocky Lake's recent entries).
There is a good gravel boat launch a short (5 minute) drive from home. (The person driving the boat will beat you home as it's closer by lake!) There is a $10 fee for using the launch. There is a seasonal restaurant with tasty meals and delicious ice cream treats adjacent to the launch. #9 has a stable, a well maintained "L" shaped floating dock with secure, safe mooring for up to 3 boats.
The Home: #9 Rocky Lake North is bright, open and inviting. There are three bedrooms with closets, a three season room ("The Loft") that is accessible from both upper bedrooms as well as having its own entrance from the deck. This room is a great retreat for kids or teens, with couches, a table and child sized bunk beds and two cots. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, pantry, and toaster oven. Dishes, cutlery, appliances: 8+ place settings, kitchen knives, wine glasses, coffee mugs, insulated mugs, juice jug and cups, pots and frying pans, basic spices, electric mixer, ice maker, water dispenser, cutting boards, electric stew pot, crock pot, baking pans, popcorn popper and more.
The house is equipped with a vacuum cleaner, brooms and mops, deck chairs, portable fire pit, firewood, deck swing, and propane BBQ with tools.
There is a huge L shaped deck on two sides of the house which lends itself greatly to outdoor gatherings, and is a great place to sun and relax.
At certain times of the year the mosquitoes (Manitoba's air force) can make their presence known. This varies year by year, and season by season. Be certain to include some quality insect repellant on your packing list, just in case. We find the lantern style systems particularly effective for outdoor gatherings. (Please be VERY mindful if you are using the burning coil type insect repellant.)
Some of the best bass fishing and walleye hotspots on the lake are literally within 300 meters of the dock...
We have recently added a portable filleting station outside the home for fisherman to more easily deal with their catch. It has running water (with a simple hose attachment) and plenty of elbow room. Please double bag and tie all fish offal and ensure they are placed in the metal bin away from scavengers. Rinse water can be collected (buckets provided) and easily dumped into the septic tank. This keeps the yard fresh for all!
In 2020 we added more dock space (another 56' -L- shape) and this makes it easier to launch small water toys away from boat traffic. Our SUP (stand up paddle-board) is hung there for easy access. We have also added an "experienced" paddle boat that seats up to 4 persons. (2 adults/2 children.) Lifejackets MUST be worn. Please feel free to use the water toys, but do so at your own risk.
In 2021 we added air conditioning to the Livingroom to provide an escape from the blistering heat that can accompany the looong days of sunlight in the north! We have also upgraded the laundry facilities to include a full size washer and dryer (a welcome addition for travelers arriving from afar or staying a week or more.)
In 2022 we upgraded the BBQ facilities, adding a larger capacity grill and a canopy so rain can't dampen your supper plans. We have also added an electric wall fireplace in the master bedroom for that extra "pop" of ambiance! I acquired a sleek, 17' square stern Grumman aluminum canoe which is available for use in the lake nearby. It is lovely to paddle...but keep an eye on the sky as storms can come up fast on Rocky Lake.
In 2023 we upgraded the BBQ canopy. Yardwork on the walkways and additional solar lights made the shoreline paths more enjoyable for guests.
BBQ'ing is a big part of family vacations...so in 2024 we upgraded the BBQ to a brand new unit with a side burner.(Check out the video link!) A renovation to the main bathroom to freshen it up and new tile surface on the deck keeps our lake home fresh in the eyes of our returning guests! We also upgraded to a rocker/recliner in the Livingroom for senior guests to compete over.

NB: Based on past experience we will now be limiting groups in the Summer to 6 adults. (Children can be counted separately. We ask for honesty and we would be pleased to deal with families on an individual basis.)
Winter rentals will be limited to 3 couples (6 adults based on double occupancy of beds) or 4 adults, each in their own bed.

About the host

Hosted by Vicky and Zane Nicholson

Host profile image
Vicky and Zane Nicholson live in Alberta, Canada. It was during the very first family fishing trip to a remote lake in Manitoba in 2005 that Zane decided the family needed a place of their own in this magnificent part of the world. The search began and in 2007 the Rocky Lake home was purchased with other family members. Since that time, Vicky and Zane have become the sole owners of Rocky Lake #9 and have now decided to share their home away from home with you!

Why they chose this property

Having some "shirt tail" relatives in the area tell of the unparalleled beauty of Rocky Lake led us to check out the area real estate. Opportunity and affordability combined and we made the decision to purchase "the lakehouse" in spite of the 12 hour drive from door to door, Alberta to Manitoba. A morning coffee out on "The Rock" on the edge of the lake is all it takes to remind us that the drive was well worth the time!

What makes this property unique

The huge wraparound deck and the amazing flat rock terrace on the lakeshore helped us overlook all the work that lay ahead. In the past 16 years there has always been a "project" as part of our vacations at the lake. We have chosen to leave the yard mostly "natural" to cut back on the outside yard work and to encourage wildlife to enter the yard.
Fishing from the shoreline of your own property in May and June is a thrill that never gets old! Seeing foxes in the yard and otters on the dock still leads to a sense of wonder... the occasional bear in the yard, not so much!
In our travels to and from the lake, moose, deer, and even caribou have been spotted. Wolves have been seen and heard and this is always a thrill! Eagles, osprey, herons, cormorants, all manner of waterfowl are sure to be seen and enjoyed. The mournful sound of a loon calling over the water after the sun is down is truly the iconic sound of the wilderness, and still lends a thrill each time it is heard.
The shoreline is highly varied and uniquely beautiful. Sightseeing around the lake is something we continue to do even after all these years. Bring something along to take pictures...!
We continue to add amenities and "toys" to the house and yard. Feel free to use them, but please treat them with respect as if they were your own.
